On 26 August, online publisher Crikey launched a crowdfunding campaign to support its decision to defend a defamation lawsuit from Lachlan Murdoch. Crikey's campaign raises several serious questions.

The ink was barely dry on the the Bill of Rights, when John Adams, the second U.S. president, pushed through four Sedition Acts criminalizing criticism of the government. During the U.S. Civil War the federal government raided newspaper offices and arrested editors; during the First World War Woodrow Wilson failed by one vote in the Senate from imposing formal government censorship in the Espionage Act and then pushed through his own Sedition Act to throw more than a thousand editors and activists in jail for their speech.  The repression spiked again in the McCarthy era. 

The U.S. is at it again today by proxy, crushing dissent online.  Consortium News, founded 27 years ago by the great investigative reporter Robert Parry, is caught up in this last wave of America’s cyclical history of repressing free speech.

Because of our independent reporting, especially on the Ukraine conflict, PayPal has permanently banned us from raising money or paying our writers with them. A British government official, according to emails leaked to The GrayZone, said he would look into Consortium News’ editor and asked Nina Jankowicz, the former head of the now discredited and defunct U.S. Disinformation Governance Board, about us. She said CN were “useful idiots.” 

And now NewsGuard, a private media rating agency with a former NSA and C.I.A. director, a former head of Homeland Security and a former NATO secretary general on its board, has assigned Consortium News a red mark for what it says is repeatedly reporting false information, applying the mark retrospectively to every article ever written, by every one of our writers. 

All these moves are designed to damage CN‘s nearly three decades of credibility as a premier alternative news site, and ultimately to hurt our ability to raise money.
