of spinach, broccoli and beans.....

HERE I WAS SEARCHING WHY PYTHAGORAS (BRILLIANT MATHEMATICIAN FROM THE 6TH CENTURY BC) HATED BEANS, THAT MY ERRANDS WENT ONTO BROCCOLI THAT WAS SPINACH… PYTHAGORAS WAS FAMOUS FOR HIS “ABSTAIN FROM BEANS”. AND SUDDENLY I (RE?)ENTERED THE WORLD OF CARL ROSE — ONE OF THE GREAT AMERICAN CARTOONISTS. WE MIGHT HAVE PUBLISHED ONE OR TWO CARTOONS FROM ROSE ON THIS SITE, UNDER THE FAIR USE OF THE WHATEVER RELEVANCY TO NEWS, ETC.

I HOPE THIS ROSE CARTOON ANSWERS MY CRITICS WHO SAY THAT THE USA NEVER SUPPORTED FASCISM, THE NAZIS OR HITLER…

This Rose cartoon (1940) likely appeared in PM, the left-leaning newspaper which ran from 1940 to 1948. Rose did a fair amount of work for PM and this piece fits-the-bill from a political standpoint. The cartoon features some of the most prominent American First isolationists of the period, including Charles Lindbergh and U.S. Senators Bennett Clark, Burt Wheeler and Gerald Nye. They are all goose-stepping in front of Hitler, who holds the globe in his hand. You can see echoes of atrocities in the background.

Carl Rose (1903 – 1971) was an American cartoonist whose work appeared in The New YorkerPopular ScienceThe Saturday Evening Post, and elsewhere. He received the National Cartoonists Society's Advertising and Illustration Award for 1958.

Rose created one of the most famous New Yorker cartoons, published December 8, 1928, with a caption by E. B. White. In the cartoon, a mother at dinner says to her young daughter, "It's broccoli, dear." Her daughter answers, "I say it's spinach, and I say the hell with it." (The phrase "I say it's spinach" entered the vernacular; in 1932, Irving Berlin's popular Broadway revue Face The Music included the song "I Say It's Spinach (And The Hell With It)".) Elizabeth Hawes adopted it for her critique of the clothing design industry: Fashion is Spinach (1938).
