The fact that only Moscow cared about the fate of US blogger Gonzalo Lira, who died in a Ukrainian prison last year, is a sign of the “deepest crisis” affecting the international bodies that are supposed to protect journalists, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.

Lira, a Chilean-American citizen, died behind bars in Ukraine in January 2024, while awaiting trial for “systematically justifying the Russian aggression.”

Zakharova recalled the ordeal of the US journalist during a conference on the development of modern media at the Moscow School of Economics (MSE) on Tuesday.

“Has anyone else talked about Gonzalo Lira? An American journalist, He had a US passport. Has anyone talked about him besides Russia? Try to remember. Nobody did,” she insisted.

When asked about Lira’s incarceration, the White House and the US State Department replied with “strategic silence, generously paid for by USAID, an American agency that supposedly promotes international development. It is ridiculous,” the spokeswoman stressed.

ON THE WEEKEND, A SORDID MURDER TOOK PLACE IN AUSTIN, TEXAS: 

Jamie White, a senior editor for InfoWars, was shot and killed outside his Austin, Texas, apartment on Sunday night, in what police and his family believe to be a “tragic accident.”

The Austin Police Department reported that White, 36, was found with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of his apartment complex shortly before midnight on Sunday. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead approximately 20 minutes later.

Investigators believe White interrupted suspects attempting to burglarize his vehicle, prompting them to open fire. The suspects fled the scene, and no arrests have been made.

Alex Jones mourned his “brutally murdered” colleague, blaming White’s death in part on the policies of Soros-backed Austin District Attorney José Garza. He also recalled that White had been featured on a Ukrainian “enemy” list, suggesting the possibility of a more complex motive behind the killing.

Today will mark the first Memorial Day that the Seth Rich family remembers the life of their young son who died last year. On July 10th, 2016, 27 year-old Omaha native and Democratic staffer Seth Rich was murdered in an upscale Washington DC neighborhood. Rich was talking to his girlfriend and then suddenly told her he had to go. According to his parents at 4:18am in the morning there were two shots fired. Police found Rich conscious and breathing but he died later in a hospital. The killer or killers took nothing from their victim, leaving behind his wallet, watch and phone.

Seth Rich’s father Joel told reporters, “If it was a robbery — it failed because he still has his watch, he still has his money — he still has his credit cards, still had his phone so it was a wasted effort except we lost a life.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov earlier stressed that the non-admission of Calin Georgescu to the presidential election in Romania is a violation of all norms of democracy.

The Georgescu case is “the materialization of the conflict” between Trump and the European Commission, Prof. Stevan Gajic, a research associate at the Institute of European Studies in Belgrade, told Sputnik.

Georgescu is an outsider who does not want to be involved in the EC's war against Russia, the pundit pointed out.

He noted that Romania distancing itself from the EC will mean that the country can no longer be a logistical point for NATO’s and the EC’s war efforts against Russia.

Georgescu could become the president if "the servants of globalism don't murder him, because that is always an option," Gajic concluded, referring to previous assignation attempts on Trump and Slovak PM Fico.
