Russia will retaliate in kind to the potential confiscation of its assets by Western countries, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Friday.

Russian authorities have assessed the unpredictability of the opposing side, as well as their tendency to violate international and other laws, Peskov stated, adding that, for now, confiscation of foreign assets in Russia can only be considered in theoretical terms.

Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley retreated on Thursday from an answer she gave during a presidential town hall in New Hampshire a day earlier, in which she did not mention slavery when asked about the cause of the US Civil War.

Some 1,000 children have had limbs amputated without anaesthesia in the Gaza Strip since Israel began its brutal bombing campaign on 7 October, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said.

It added that allowing the continued shelling of Gaza means greenlighting the killing of more children.

The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip has previously stated that nearly 70 per cent of the casualties of the aggression were children and women.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken came under fire for the second time in just over a week when he wrote on social media Thursday that this year has been dangerous for members of the press—without mentioning the dozens of journalists who have been killed in Israel’s U.S.-backed assault of the Gaza Strip.

“This has been an extraordinarily dangerous year for press around the world,” Blinken said. “Many killed, many more wounded, hundreds detained, attacked, threatened, injured—simply for doing their jobs. I am profoundly grateful to the press for getting accurate, timely information to people.”

Yet after two years in office, it is Scholz who walks increasingly alone amid a flurry of crises that have rocked and divided his three-way coalition with the Greens and the fiscally conservative Free Democrats (FDP), prompting voters to question whether the chancellor is up to the job and if his government should serve a full four-year term. 

Let it be clear friends: silence is complicity. And empty calls for peace without a ceasefire and an end to the occupation, and the shallow words of empathy without direct action: all under the banner of complicity.

Elvira Nabiullina is the top technocrat keeping Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war machine humming. During the decade she’s sat at the helm of Russia’s central bank, Nabiullina’s hawkish monetary policies have repeatedly saved the ruble and kept the country’s economy afloat. In the process, Putin’s banker, once considered a moderating influence and now his silent enabler, has managed to stave off the effects of unprecedented Western sanctions designed to drain the Kremlin’s coffers, *prolonging the war on Ukraine.
