Despite a day of frenzied legislative maneuvering and another attempt by President Obama to rally public opinion behind some kind of compromise, the two parties made no visible progress in finding common ground, leaving Washington, Wall Street and much of the nation watching the clock toward a deadline of midnight Tuesday.
Demonstrating the deep partisan divide coloring the budget fight, the House voted 218 to 210 to approve the plan endorsed by Speaker John A. Boehner to increase the federal debt ceiling in two stages. No Democrats supported the measure; 22 Republicans opposed it. The White House condemned it as a “political exercise.”
SO I was chatting with Chris Coons, the new Democratic senator from Delaware who had a rare win over the Tea Party when he beat loony Christine “I’ve Dabbled in Witchcraft but I Am Not a Witch” O’Donnell in the midterms.
Coons is a smart guy who’s alarmed at finding himself in a vicious combat zone that makes “Shark Week” look like a guppy party.
He said he felt as if he were in “an alternative universe.” He wonders if the president, rather than using an analogy about late credit card payments, should explain that failing to raise the debt ceiling is like the nation’s refusing to pay its mortgage. And he glumly noted that there would be a “bouquet of blame” for everyone if Congress and the White House allowed the country to “Titanic.”
“You know,” I told the suffering senator, “there is an easy solution.”
He looked up hopefully.
“Witchcraft,” I beamed. “Too bad we don’t have a senator who knows some spells.”
Ancient incantations and eye of newt — not that Newt — would be the only way to conjure up a less embarrassing group of leaders.
The world is watching in fearful — and sometimes gleeful — fascination as the Tea Party drives a Thunderbird off the cliff with the president and speaker of the House strapped in the back. The Dow is hiding under the bed with a glass of single malt. Can it get more excruciating? Apple has more cash than the U.S. government.
Do you remember the rally by Jon Stewart mob... I did this cartoon then November 2010... I felt it was time to bring it back to the fore...The ritewingnutters have taken over the congress with sandgrit and splodge for brains... If I were Obama, I'd tell the lot to get stuffed and say this is what we're going to do... But I don't think Obama wants to take full responsibility for A) raising taxes, B) increase the deficit, C) revigorate employment and D) warn the world about global warming and do something about it like reduce CO2 emissions and minimise population growth. The "Yes we can" slogan has turned to mush... It shoud now be "Yes I can" and be damned...
One could develop a conspiracy theory in regard to the federal budget impass... Without knowing, the republicans and the tea party are actually playing in the hands of the islamist extremists. One should ask Grover Norquist about it... Who knows...
Let us face the momentous truth: The United States has been rendered ungovernable except on the extortionate terms of the far-right.
For the first time in modern history, one of the two major parties is in the hands of a faction so extreme that it is willing to destroy the economy if it doesn't get its way.
And the Tea Party Republicans have a perfect foil in President Barack Obama. The budget deal is the logical conclusion of Obama's premise that the way to make governing partners of the far right is to keep appeasing them. He is the perfect punching bag. He can be blasted both as a far-left liberal and as a weakling.
a spoonful of stirrers...
