MP let off for drinking-driving
A NSW Liberal MP has walked away without a conviction after pleading guilty to a drink-driving charge.
Bart Bassett, the member for Londonderry and Hawkesbury Mayor, registered a blood-alcohol reading of 0.053 after being pulled over on the Cahill Expressway in Sydney on June 15.
He pleaded guilty in the Downing Centre Local Court today before magistrate Gail Madgwick, who did not record a conviction.
Outside court, Mr Bassett expressed relief at the decision.
"I'm glad it's behind us and I just want to thank (my lawyer) David Begg for his assistance, and I'm just going to let the (NSW) premier know," he told reporters on Thursday.

I could not afford a lawyer...
Yep, no worries, next time I am over the limit by that much I can quote this precedent to the your-honour-of-the-court... But I am more careful these days... When I drive, I drink not...
minister's husband good behaviour guns...
The husband of New South Wales Government minister Pru Goward has escaped conviction on six firearm offences.
David Barnett, 80, pleaded guilty to six charges at the Yass Local Court.
They included possession of a prohibited weapon, having a non-compliant gun safe and inappropriate storage of a loaded rifle and three magazines of ammunition.
Barnett's defence counsel highlighted his clean record, large number of references and community involvement.
Magistrate Geraldine Beattie described the breaches as an oversight and found him guilty on all six charges.
However she dismissed the charges without recording a conviction, emphasising Barnett's many years of good character.
She ordered the forfeiture of the weapons.
