Fairfax chairman Roger Corbett appeared on Lateline last night, the night before his flagship newspapers issued their 12-page election specials, to slam Kevin Rudd and effectively endorse Tony Abbott.

"It would have been much better," he said of the Labor Party, "that they'd come undone with Julia Gillard leading them than Kevin Rudd".

He blamed Rudd for the destabilisation of the Labor party – much of it carried in the pages of the Fairfax newspapers.

Corbett criticised the ALP for politicising the public service, which was rich, coming from a man who also sits on the Reserve Bank board.

Newspaper executives have every right to endorse political candidates, but they also have every right to be called out for hypocrisy and for lacking integrity. 

Corbett's reasons for endorsing Abbott? "He is a very sincere, nice type of human being, and I think he'll be very dedicated, focused in the job, and we certainly need, in the economic times we're about to go into, some really clear and good leadership." 

As a former Fairfax journalist put it, someone is suffering from a severe case of relevance deprivation syndrome.
