who knows what chemicals are streaming into the food supply...The explosion of new food additives coupled with an easing of oversight requirements is allowing manufacturers to avoid the scrutiny of the Food and Drug Administration, which is responsible for ensuring the safety of chemicals streaming into the food supply. And in hundreds of cases, the FDA doesn’t even know of the existence of new additives, which can include chemical preservatives, flavorings and thickening agents, records and interviews show. “We simply do not have the information to vouch for the safety of many of these chemicals,” said Michael Taylor, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for food. The FDA has received thousands of consumer complaints about additives in recent years, saying certain substances seem to trigger asthmatic attacks, serious bouts of vomiting, intestinal-tract disorders and other health problems. At a pace far faster than in previous years, companies are adding secret ingredients to everything from energy drinks to granola bars. But the more widespread concern among food-safety advocates and some federal regulators is the quickening trend of companies opting for an expedited certification process to a degree never intended when it was established 17 years ago to, in part, help businesses. A voluntary certification system has nearly replaced one that relied on a more formal, time-consuming review — where the FDA, rather than companies, made the final determination on what is safe. The result is that consumers have little way of being certain that the food products they buy won’t harm them.

Let’s stop Congress from interfering with the dietary guidelines, please
Politico Morning Agriculture reports today on an unprecedented move by the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC). The committee sent a letter to members of Congress to protest legislative interference with its scientific process.
Recall: The DGAC’s research report alarmed meat producers when it said that sustainability needed to be considered in developing dietary guidelines.
Of course sustainability should be considered in developing dietary guidelines. Agricultural policy needs to be linked to health policy, and it’s high time we did so.
But industry protests and letters from Congress induced USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack to assure Congress that the 2015 guidelines will focus only on nutrition.

I'd rather bother you with the smell of my armpits...
Miller is just one of countless Americans who are sensitive to "fragrance," a cryptic category of ingredients manufacturers add to products from cleaning supplies to toiletries. This generic term encompasses thousands of combinations of chemicals that give consumer goods their odors, but the identity of those chemicals is rarely disclosed.
For decades, fragrance makers have insisted on treating their recipes as trade secrets, even as complaints about negative health effects have proliferated. A 2009 study, for example, concluded that nearly one-third of Americans were irritated by the smell of scented products on others, and 19 percent experienced headaches or breathing difficulties when exposed to air fresheners or deodorizers.

Most of the artificial fragrances are derived from benzene. In this household I have banned a few products, especially some dishwashing liquids with overbearing "nice" smells which make me spew. And I mean it. Should someone use a "green" coloured Palmolive liquid (to name one of the brands that I have thrown out) with an enormous amount of "nice" fragrance, I would go nuts. And I mean NUTS. THE FRAGRANCE WOULD START A CHAIN REACTION OF VIOLENT BEHAVIOUR IN MY BRAIN. NUTS.
The stink of cigarettes burning does the same thing as I try to control my breathing that could stop any minute. The worse is when the smokers don't extinguish their cigarette butts properly and let a filter burn, releasing more harmful smoke than a 40-tonnes truck close up.
We're nuts. And this goes also for the hidden world of FLAVOURS... SEE TOON AT TOP.
