Barcelona: Scientists from around the world called for stepped-up efforts to use forests to keep global warming to the lowest limit agreed by governments in 2015, as a key report on how to meet that goal is finalised in South Korea this week.

"Forests really are the unsung hero of our struggle to address climate change," said Deborah Lawrence, a University of Virginia professor and one of 40 scientists who backed a statement emphasising how the Earth's climate depends on forests.

The natural processes by which forests suck in and store carbon help reduce levels of planet-warming carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - and forests also underpin key parts of the world's economy, the scientists said.

Nothing new here, but worth repeating with more emotions in the scientific plea. The planet is an inanimate object with life on its surface. Whatever this life does or not is only existential to this "life on earth". Add more CO2 in the atmosphere and the atmosphere warms up. Reduce the amount of forests and the atmosphere warms up. It's quite simple, despite complex feed-back mechanisms that hide the true extend of the problem such as ice "warming up" without turning into water just yet.

holding his deceitful crassy grounds...

Scott Morrison has resisted conservatives’ calls to withdraw Australia from the Paris climate agreement but ruled out providing more money to the global climate fund.

The prime minister made the comments on 2GB Radio on Monday, before the release of a Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, which is expected to call for a phaseout of coal power generation to help limit temperature rises to 1.5C.

Morrison repeated his claim that Australia would meet its Paris emissions reduction target “in a canter”, despite environment department figures showing emissions increased 1.3% in the year to March 2018, suggesting Australia is likely to miss the target.

PM ScoMo is only holding onto this Parisian Pretence as to catch a few more votes from unawares people, to his web of deceit. Is he bullshitting? Yes he is... The whole process in the Crass Party (CONservative Royalists And Snooty Sods Party) — led by a former Crass advertiser who, as a Pentocrapist, called upon hell to make tourists to come to Aussieland — is to delay any action on global warming as long as possible, like never ever. not building any more coal plants in kansas, toto...

In August, President Donald Trump told a rally in West Virginia: “We are back. The coal industry is back.” And to be sure, Trump keeps trying to revive the dying U.S. industry by doing things like relaxing pollution rules for coal power plants, pushing initiatives to keep failing coal plants open, and nominating a pro-coal candidate as a federal energy regulator.

Despite all that, however, the outlook for coal, especially in the U.S., is actually pretty terrible, and reminders of this just keep coming.

For starters, the amount of electricity in the U.S. produced from coal is at a 35-year low due to market forces pushing a switch to natural gas, wind, and solar. And of all the coal mined in the U.S. in the first half of this year, 10 percent of it was headed to power plants scheduled to shut down by 2032. Not exactly a sustainable business plan.

U.S. energy companies seem to agree that coal isn’t a growth opportunity. On October 4, the German environmental group Urgewald released an updated database detailing the new and expanded coal-fired power plants planned around the world. How many are in the U.S.?

Zero.

The few major U.S. coal plants that were still seriously on the table last year have all but fizzled out, primarily due to their poor financial outlooks.

walking over hot coal...

In a report authored by more than 90 scientists, and pulling together thousands of pieces of climate research, the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said global emissions of greenhouse gas pollution must reach zero by about 2050 in order to stop global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius.

At current rates, they said 1.5C would be breached as early as 2040, and 2C would be breached in the 2060s.

If that happens, temperatures over many land regions would increase by double that amount. And at 2C of warming, experts said the world would risk hitting "tipping points", setting the world to uncontrollable temperatures.

With the world already 1C warmer than pre-industrial times, experts said this report, released by the IPCC in Incheon, Korea, was likely the last warning before it would be impossible to keep warming at 1.5C.

"We're not on track, we're currently heading for about 3 degrees to 4 degrees of warming by 2100," report contributor Professor Mark Howden from ANU said.

"To limit temperature change to 1.5 degrees we have to strongly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. They have to decline about 45 per cent by 2030 and they have to reach zero by 2050.

"On a global basis, coal will have to drop between 0 and 2 per cent of existing usage."

Coral reefs are expected to decline by a further 70 to 90 per cent under 1.5C, but that rises to more than 99 per cent reef loss as temperature rises hit 2C.

In Australia, that means the vast majority of the Great Barrier Reef will undergo significant upheaval or collapse.

Combined with increased ocean acidification due to higher carbon dioxide concentrations, this is expected to heavily affect fish stocks and diversity.

A rise of 2C would mean three times as much of the earth's terrestrial ecosystems would undergo transformations compared to a rise of 1.5C, significantly increasing species extinctions.

the environment is to be screwed by the "energy mix"...

Federal Environment Minister Melissa Price has argued some of the world's leading climate scientists are "drawing a long bow" in calling for an end to coal power in a bid to limit global warming.

Key points:
  • United Nations' IPCC warns that global gas emissions must reach zero by 2050 to stop global warming at 1.5 degrees
  • Environment Minister suggests the 91 scientists behind the report got it wrong
  • The Federal Government maintains it will meet its commitment to the Paris climate agreement

In a special report released yesterday, the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said global greenhouse gas emissions must reach zero by about 2050 in order to stop global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The authors warned that if warming was allowed to reach 2C, the world would risk hitting "tipping points", setting a course towards uncontrollable temperatures.

And they said the use of coal for electricity generation would have to drop to between 0 and 2 per cent of current usage.

Speaking on the ABC's AM program in her first broadcast interview since taking up the role, Ms Price argued that: "Coal does form a very important part of the Australian energy mix".

A woman and an idiot as well. Congrats, Melissa...

doomed... by 2032.

Earth is on track to face devastating consequences of climate change — extreme drought, food shortages and deadly flooding — unless there’s an “unprecedented” effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, a new United Nations report warns.

The planet’s surface has already warmed by 1 degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) and could see a catastrophic 1.5 C (2.7 F) increase between 2030 and 2052, scientists say.

“This is concerning because we know there are so many more problems if we exceed 1.5 degrees C global warming, including more heat waves and hot summers, greater sea level rise, and, for many parts of the world, worse droughts and rainfall extremes,” Andrew King, a climate science academic at the University of Melbourne, said in a statement to CNN.

The stunning statistics were released Monday in a report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which warned that we must make “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society” in order to save our planet.

Scientists with the Nobel Prize-winning IPCC said that in order to have even a 50-50 chance of staying under the 1.5-degree cap, the world must become “carbon neutral” by 2050. Any additional carbon dioxide emissions would require removing the harmful gas from the air.

If nothing is done, Earth can expect temperatures to rise by 3 degrees Celsius, more frequent or extreme droughts, an increase in deadly hurricanes and as much as 90 percent of coral reefs dying off — including the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, according to the report.

Countries in the Southern Hemisphere would see the most drastic effects.

“The next few years are probably the most important in human history,” IPCC co-chair Debra Roberts, head of the Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department in South Africa, told Agence France-Presse.

destroy scomo...

Former Liberal leader John Hewson has called on voters in his former seat of Wentworth to use the byelection as a referendum on climate change and vote against the Liberals.

He suggested it might take “a drubbing” in the byelection on 20 October to force the party he once led to respond to “the urgent challenge” of climate change, and that Liberal voters should consider voting for others before returning to vote Liberal at a general election in six months’ time.

“The community has a unique opportunity now, with a byelection just months before a general election, they could register a substantial protest vote against the government or any other candidates that don’t understand the magnitude and urgency of the climate change challenge,” he told Guardian Australia.

“If the Liberal party doesn’t stand up and argue the case on this, I think people should be encouraged to vote against them.”

“Is it going to take a drubbing in a byelection to get them to do something on climate?” he asked.

Hewson led the Liberal party from 1990 to 1994 and has been scathing of the party’s failure to address climate change.

Meanwhile:

The Bureau of Meteorology has just upped the chance of an El Nino this year, meaning there is now three times the normal risk of the climate driver associated with hot and dry conditions happening this year.

Senior climatologist Robyn Duell said it had been a slow boil.

"We've been hovering at an El Nino watch for a long time going 'Will it? Won't it?'" she said.

But Ms Duell said in the past three weeks staff had seen a little bit of a kick in the eastern Pacific Ocean temperatures, which was finally showing up in the winds.

"We've seen a response in the atmosphere. That's why we've raised our alert up from a watch to an alert," she said.

Should this possible El Nino develop fully, one could expect temperature records hitting 47 degrees Celsius in Sydney, before March 2019... and certainly by 2021.

The western New South Wales town of Balranald is set to become home to two of Australia's biggest solar farms.

Funding has been secured for a $350 million solar farm, which is expected to generate enough energy to power about 50,000 homes.

Key points:
  • Construction is set to begin on the 255-megawatt Sunraysia Solar Farm and the 349-megawatt Limondale solar project
  • A construction camp will be built in Balranald to house workers
  • The transition from coal to wind and solar poses challenges for the energy market, Energy Networks Australia says

Australian-Chinese company Maoneng Group will begin construction on the 255-megawatt Sunraysia Solar Farm in coming weeks.

It comes after German energy giant Innogy confirmed in September it would begin building its Limondale solar project near Balranald this month.

Limondale is a 349-megawatt project, set to be Australia's biggest solar farm to date.

Maoneng Group vice president Qiao Nan Han said about 400 workers would be employed during construction, with much of the labour sourced locally.

"There will be a construction camp built in the town of Balranald where it will host the large portion of employees," Mr Han said.

jo nova is lagging behind in may 30, 2018...

Climate science denier, so-called “science communicator”, and blogger JoNova went on SkyNews’s Outsiders programme last weekend.

Outsiders, in case you didn’t know, is hosted by Ross Cameron and Rowan Dean who together think human-caused climate change is a myth.

SkyNews is a bit of a haven for climate science denialists, what with Alan Jones, Andrew Bolt and the Outsiders crew.

Anyway, back to JoNova (real name Joanne Codling).  She was askedif there had been a “Road to Damascus” moment for her on climate change.  She said it was in February 2007 when her husband had told her that in the Earth’s geological past, there had been a 700 year lag between a rise in temperatures and a rise in CO2.

This led JoNova to Google for a bit. While this didn’t shoot down the argument that CO2 causes climate change, it did make her think that “the media is hiding something.”  According to Jo, all the scientists know this fact, but they don’t want to debate it.

“How come I never read that in New Scientist,” mused JoNova.

Thats pretty funny. Here’s a NewScientist article, also from 2007, explaining how this well known CO2 lag has been misused to spread doubt about human-caused climate change.

The short dissection of this myth, is that when the Earth has emerged from ice ages in the past, this happens slowly. What get’s the process going is a slight change the Earth’s tilt that causes warmer temperatures.  Once that happens, the oceans get a bit warmer and start to degas the CO2, kick starting a feedback mechanism.  CO2 gets released from other processes too.

None of that stops the CO2 released from burning fossil fuels from being able to kick start the warming that we’re now going through, which of course it does.  CO2 can both cause warming, and be a symptom of warming.

What’s more, this apparent attempt by scientists to hide the CO2 lag from the general public that JoNova hints at, is total bullshit.  The scientific literature is awash with research explaining this process.  Nobody challenges it. JoNova is giving the SkyNews viewers a rolled gold strawman.

The “CO2 lags temperature” argument is a classic of the climate science denial world. Here’s a video from the Denial101x that explains this myth.
