Rumsfeld resigns after US election loss
US President George W Bush has announced the resignation of Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, following the Democratic victories in legislative elections.
The Democrats surged to power in Congress after voter backlash over the Iraq war.
Mr Bush says he has chosen former Center Intelligence Agency (CIA) director Robert Gates as Mr Rumsfeld's successor.
"After a series of thoughtful conversations, Secretary Rumsfeld and I agreed that the timing is right for new leadership at the Pentagon," Mr Bush said

"I don't believe there will be any change at all in US policy," said Yousef Abu Hijra, who runs a mobile phone shop in Amman. "There's no difference between the two parties."
In Israel, too, some hold that view.
"What I think is that for Israel, it makes no difference which party will take the power," said Rami Bengur, 58, an Israeli video store owner. "This country is very important for them. From my point of view, they will do anything to protect Israel, no matter which party."
