Are we alone?

It’s the ultimate question, but it’s also an impossible task.

“We could find signs of life, but it’s not going to be the definitive proof that we were hoping for when we started out on this journey.”

So says Professor Sarah Seager of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the pioneering planetary scientist, author of The Smallest Lights in the Universe and one of the main characters in director Nathaniel Kahn’s intriguing new documentary, The Hunt for Planet B

Previewed recently at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival, this impressive film explores the development of the science of exoplanets—planets around other stars—and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). It does so against the backdrop of the upcoming launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST or “Webb”), the much-delayed $10 billion space telescope that’s due to launch on October 31, 2021.

the sisterhood...

We have been told by a few journalists that the search for alien life on planet B, C, D,...X,Y, Z, etc, is led by women (including article above — see below). Apparently, it was women mathematicians who worked out the parameters for the moon landings. We've already studied the case of the Russian female mathematicians employed by the derivative market as basically, to tell the truth, males are useless at details — small and big — and the "Russians are great mathematicians". It is understandable that women would be looking for life somewhere else than on planet A — Earth, being dominated by dumb, brainless, boofy males.

It makes sense that a beautiful goddess be ruling the universe rather than a hairy-faced old white guy with a bad temper, useless enough by not being able to control his angels to become devils. We wish for the Dominatrixes.

Astronomy is dominated by men. In fact, few fields have a greater gender imbalance. However, in the sub-genre of exoplanets—which was a super-niche at the turn of the century yet has arguably come to dominate astronomy in recent years—that’s not the case, the documentary suggests.

Seager, an expert on the atmospheres of exoplanets, has helped shape a new discipline within astronomy and hopes to use Webb to further push the boundaries. One of its first tasks will be to investigate “super Earths.” “These planets are two to three times the size of Earth and they appear to be the most common type of planet in our galaxy,” says Seager. “We don’t know what they’re made of , we don't know how they formed and we don't know how why there’s so many of them. Webb can observe their atmospheres very easily and we hope that will help inform us about what the planets are made of.”

Whether we’re alone as a species is a different question that Webb will struggle to answer, but The Hunt for Planet B makes it clear that Seager is not alone.

It reveals a cast of women that are leaders in exoplanet science; Natalie Batalha, project scientist for the Kepler mission that first revealed our night sky to be filled with more planets even than stars, Jill Tarter, former director of the Center for SETI Research, Maggie Turnbull, an expert on potentially habitable planets at the Global Science Institute, and Amy Lo, System Engineer for Webb.

The cartoon below is from Claude Serre (1938-1998) — a French cartoonist and illustrator for French journals, including PlexusPlanetHara-KiriLuiPariscope and La Vie Electrique. Serre also illustrated books, such as Asunrath. Serre incorporated his interest in the fantastic into many of his lithographs, which were published, in many countries including Japan and Germany. We've already mentioned him there...

In 1969 Serre met Jack Claude Nezat, who wrote numerous articles devoted to Serre's art and and organized exhibitions in Germany in 1975 and in 1976-1977. Serre, drew cartoons on such topics as medicine, sports, automobiles and DIY. His first book of cartoons, published in 1972, Black Humor and Men in White, satirised the medical professionals. Here in this (undated) cartoon explored the subject of space exploration (by men)...

TOI-1231 b...

A new planet resembling Neptune could help us better understand far-away planetary systems, as well as our own, according to NASA. But, sadly, it’s unlikely humans will ever reach the distant, gaseous world.

TOI-1231 b is more than 3.5 times as big as Earth and is uncomfortably warm by Earthing standards, registering temperatures at 134 degrees Fahrenheit (57 Celsius). Although hard to imagine, when compared to the rest of the known universe it’s actually one of the “coolest” small planets to be identified.

Technically, TOI-1231 b is classified as an exoplanet, since it is a planet orbiting another star – in this case, a red-dwarf star, which is smaller than our own Sun but has a longer life span. The exoplanet has an incredibly short year, as it orbits the red-dwarf star once every 24 days.

Discovered by an international team of astronomers led by Dr. Jennifer Burt, an exoplanet researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, and Professor Diana Dragomir, an exoplanet researcher at the University of New Mexico, TOI-1231 b has similarities to Neptune, boasting a potentially “rich” atmosphere that can be observed and studied using space telescopes. The researchers’ gassy find was entered into NASA’s Exoplanet Archive earlier this month.

For now, it seems that gazing at the world through a telescope will have to suffice. TOI-1231 b is located some 90 light-years from Earth. To put that figure in perspective, one light-year is the equivalent of about 6 trillion miles (9 trillion km). It might not be such a tragedy, though, according to NASA, the planet is uninhabitable because of its size.

Due to what we already know about TOI-1231 b, it’s possible that researchers will find evidence of water-based clouds in its atmosphere, NASA said. And because the distant planet system is moving at a high velocity away from Earth, it’s conceivable that hydrogen atoms leaving the planet’s atmosphere will give TOI-1231 b a ‘tail’.

The planet’s discovery follows a series of other promising developments that can help us unravel the mystery of the universe. In April, Spanish astronomers announced that they had completed the most accurate picture yet of the Milky Way, discovering a huge new hidden structure made up of massive blue stars spanning 10,000 light-years, providing insight into the building blocks of our own DNA.

the alienhood...

Although during the previous century the West actively inflated the supposedly unlimited power of Communist ideology in the USSR, and other countries in the socialist community, it still preferred to remain silent about its own ideological influence on the masses in the United States, or in its Western allies.

Moreover, the West has long understood that it is easier to control the masses with an ideology calculated to influence them than using what is essentially elitist science, which the masses are not able to understand. By entering the arena with the masses, ideology gains an advantage in the struggle for power, and therefore those who developed the ideology, filling orders that are put in by the ruling elite, seek to adjust the ideology being promoted in the country to fit these attitudes. Ideology is not a religion, although it still strives to instill a down-to-earth faith in the masses in which various ideas, rulers, or material idols (say, the “golden calf”, or extraterrestrial intelligence) are put in God’s place. Ideology has philosophical roots, and Plato can be considered as its forerunner: even the term “idea” itself comes from Democritus and Plato.

The media, civil society institutions, and propaganda all play a significant role in the process of the influence that ideology has on society. Their diversity, maturity, and consolidation enable formulating and upholding the interests held by the “customers of the ideology”. Reinforcing faith in various ideologies is very often done by spreading a “wave of fear” to show, especially during critical moments in the development of society, “the importance of supporting the current regime” and that supposedly only it is able to defeat the “threat” or fear.

Hence, it is not surprising that during periods of social or financial crises in the West, to deflect the masses from staging anti-government riots, a certain ideology is thrown at them, and at the same time that is reinforced with “overarching fear”. That is why, during periods of crisis, “horror stories”, such as “a deadly comet is approaching the Earth”, or the expected explosion of a volcano, the danger of flooding, etc. suddenly arise. These “horror stories” periodically change, as do other “centers of the limelight”, to manipulate them and switch public consciousness from certain ones to others.

And today, when various American media outlets, politicians and scientists, and even Vice President Harris, are talking about the collapse of the United States, and Americans, as Bloomberg writes, are suffering from an invasion of rats and other parasites in New York high-rise buildings falling apart from time and mold, the topic of UFOs has been unfurled to divert the spotlight the US population is focused on.  Moreover, based on the results of widespread lunacy about UFOs and flying saucers, YouGov and a number of other companies conduct regular public opinion polls, which allow those initiating this campaign to adjust their actions in real time. Consequently, it can be observed firsthand that recently the passion held by Americans for UFOs, and their fascination with them, has increased even more. This is especially true in anticipation of the release of a government report, whose preparation involved bringing in government agencies and the American intelligence services, and for which significant financial resources were “allocated”. An unclassified version of this report is due to be released by June 25, and will be presented to Congress.

However, according to available data, American intelligence services have not yet found any evidence of alien technology in the incidents when UFOs allegedly appeared. Nonetheless, this did not prevent the “experts”, taking into account the long-term orders from the country’s ruling elite to stir up Russophobia and Sinophobia, from putting forth the assumption that “some objects may be new images of Russian and Chinese technology”, and by doing so unleash an information campaign on top of that about a “foreign threat of the United States from its enemies”.

Like an avalanche, this topic of “the use of UFOs by enemies” began to be actively promoted not only in the United States, but also in “satellite countries”. Articles that are clearly paid for, such as those published by the British Daily Star, began to appear through media outlets that are completely controlled: “Vladimir Putin is behind the pyramidal UFOs swarming over a US Navy ship, says ex-senator”, where former US Senator Harry Reid, well-known for his overt dislike of Russia, draws his own conclusions.

And now, knowing full well that the topic of UFOs, besides its effect of spreading propaganda and offering a distraction, can be successfully used to obtain and siphon off government funding, Great Britain has already started to think about creating a “UFO hunter squad”, which The Telegraph gleefully reported about, citing its sources in the country’s Ministry of Defense. According to The Telegraph, this British “squad” is ready to assemble next month, but they are asking their American colleagues to provide convincing evidence that UFOs exist.

As far as the American intelligence services go, after successfully “spending” millions of dollars on the investigation, they were forced to admit that they did not find any evidence that the aerial phenomena that pilots for the US Navy have witnessed in recent years are alien spaceships. At the same time, the New York Times recalls how from 2007 to 2012 the US Department of Defense collected detailed reports on UFOs as part of the Pentagon’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, and last year the Pentagon relaunched the program as the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force. But at the same time it is well known, and not only in the United States, that in terms of “siphoning off funds allocated from the budget,” American intelligence services and the Pentagon can outperform anyone at all.

Regarding the disputes initiated by the American propaganda ideological machine surrounding UFOs and flying saucers in the United States, it is impossible to take them seriously. Unless one were to consider this whole “spectacle” to be just another evaluative factor in how inadequate American leadership is.

nato-all-for-nothing-good...

NATO leaders are set to expand the use of their all-for-one, one-for-all, collective defence clause to include attacks in space, the military organisation's top civilian official says.

Key points:
  • Around 2,000 satellites orbit the Earth, with more than half operated by NATO countries
  • NATO is concerned about China and Russia's behaviour in space
  • NATO's collective defence clause has only been activated once before, following the September 11, 2001, attacks

Article 5 of NATO's founding treaty states that attacks on any one of the 30 allies will be considered an attack on all of them.

So far, it has only applied to military attacks on land, sea, or in the air, and more recently in cyberspace.

"I think it is important [with] our Article 5, which states that an attack on one will be regarded as an attack on all, that we all will respond," NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg said.

"We will make it clear at this summit that, of course, any attack on space capabilities like satellites and so on or attacks from space will or could trigger Article 5," he said, a few hours before chairing a summit with US President Joe Biden and his counterparts.

MEANWHILE:

Russia-US Space Cooperation Still On

Putin denied that Russia was planning to end its cooperation with the United States in space, insisting that one of the last remaining areas of common interest between the two countries was still on despite threats to the contract from his space agency chief.

"I think you just misunderstood", Putin said when asked about reports that Moscow planned to withdraw from the International Space Station project. "We are interested in continuing work with the US in this direction, and we will continue to do so if our US partners don't refuse to do that".

Russia is open to cooperation with other countries in space but strongly opposes militarisation in this area, President Vladimir Putin said.

"We don't rule out cooperation with many world nations in space. But probably everybody knows very well our position in terms that we are categorically against space militarisation altogether", Putin said.

Putin said Moscow believes that space should be free from any and all kinds of weapons located in near-Earth orbits.

"We don't have these kinds of plans or any plans, especially concerning the transfer of technology of the level that you have just described", the Russian president added.

Russian State Space Corporation Roscosmos General Director Dmitry Rogozin said last week that Russia might revise its decision to withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS) and build its own orbital station if the United States lifts sanctions.
