President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden phoned in to NBC’s Al Roker during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday to deliver a holiday message to Americans. “My message is after two years, you’re back, America’s back,”Biden said. “There’s nothing we’re unable to overcome.”

“America is back” is something of a Biden mantra. Biden repeatedly used the phrase following his inauguration to describe his administration’s effort to re-engage with international allies and rejoin multilateral agreements like the Paris Climate Accords. The phrase signified a return to liberal globalism after four years of Donald Trump’s “America first”approach to foreign policy.

As empty as it sounds abroad, the phrase is downright insulting at home, and there’s enough hot air in Biden’s words to fill a hundred Macy’s parade balloons.

Biden’s approval ratings have been in freefall lately, hitting 36% in a recent Quinnipiac University poll. Another poll by Gallup in October showed Biden suffering the steepest decline in approval for a new president since Harry Truman tried to fill the shoes of his deceased predecessor, Franklin Roosevelt, in 1945.

Voters are most concerned with the US’ economic situation. Inflation is at its highest level in 31 years, erasing the wage gains touted by Biden as part of his “durable and strong” economic recovery. Drivers traveling for Thanksgiving are paying the highest gas prices since 2012, and a traditional Thanksgiving dinner this year is the most expensive in history, up 14% since last year. Supply chain disruptions persist, and shortages of food and consumer goods have been reported across the country.

Biden will need to solve all of these issues within the next year, as polls currently show the Democratic Party unlikely to keep control of the House and Senate in next year’s midterm elections. With Trump seriously considering another run at the White House in 2024, the ex-president is currently beating Biden in five key swing states he lost in 2020. Winning these states would hand Trump the presidency, but other pollsters are even more bullish on Trump. A recent Rasmussen poll shows him beating Biden 45% to 32% in a 2024 rematch.

Sadly, the Biden administration hasn’t offered any real solutions to ease the public’s economic anxieties, which, while triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic, are partly of the administration’s own making.

backsliding...

"Many" democratic governments are backsliding, while autocratic regimes are becoming "even more brazen in their repression," according to the annual report by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA).

The report, published on Monday, found that number of backsliding democracies has doubled in the past decade, and mentioned in particular the situation in the United States, as well as EU nations such as Hungary, Poland and Slovenia.

"The pandemic broadened the preexisting rift between high-performing democracies in Western Europe and weaker counterparts in Central and Eastern Europe,'' said Sam Van Der Staak, the head of International IDEA for Europe.

"That divide will continue to challenge Europe's unity, as it also faces greater outside pressure from nondemocratic superpowers," Van Der Staak said. "But its increased democratic isolation also poses opportunities for greater integration and collaboration, as Europe is forced to consider the value of democracy as its core foundational force.''

US on 'backsliding' list for first time

In the United States, where corporations and wealthy individuals can give immense amounts of money to political candidates, and partisan gerrymandering of electoral districts is becoming more commonplace, President Joe Biden is set to host a virtual summit on protecting international democracy at the beginning of December.

"The United States is a high-performing democracy, and even improved its performance in indicators of impartial administration (corruption and predictable enforcement) in 2020. However, the declines in civil liberties and checks on government indicate that there are serious problems with the fundamentals of democracy," Alexander Hudson, a co-author of the report, told French news agency AFP.

inventing his glorious past...

US President Joe Biden claimed that he met with former Israeli PM Golda Meir during the Six-Day War – a time before she held the office and while he was still in law school.

Speaking at a menorah lighting for Hanukkah on Thursday, Biden claimed he had been a “liaison” between Israel and Egypt at the time. In fact, Biden was still a student at the Syracuse University College of Law during the brief 1967 conflict – and Meir herself would not be elected prime minister for another two years.

“I have known every – every [Israeli] prime minister well since Golda Meir, including Golda Meir,” Biden declared, adding that Meir had invited him to “be the liaison between she and the Egyptians about the Suez.”

It appears Biden was actually referencing a meeting with Meir he had before the 1973 Yom Kippur War, six years later.

Biden’s efforts to tout his Israel credentials left out certain details of what actually did transpire between him and Meir on his 1973 trip there as a young senator, however.

Upon arriving from Cairo, Egypt, Biden apparently told Israel to offer “unilateral withdrawals from areas with no strategic importance” in the West Bank and Gaza, according to an Israeli memo from the time.

Biden cited talks in Cairo in which Egyptian officials had accepted “Israel’s military superiority,” the Times of Israel reported.

His advice apparently did not impress Meir and Syria and Egypt attacked Israel less than six weeks later. The memo described the young Biden as being full of respect for Meir, but having “made comments that signaled his lack of diplomatic experience.”

The memo notes that Biden felt it was “impossible to have a real debate in the Senate about the Middle East as senators were fearful of saying things unpopular with Jewish voters.”

Biden was also reportedly critical of the Nixon administration for being “dragged by Israel.” The president has seemingly left such hesitation in the dust in recent years, describing himself as a “Zionist” in 2007.

It’s not the first time Biden has embellished or mis-remembered his place at historically significant moments, from claiming he was arrested while trying to visit Nelson Mandela during South African apartheid to exaggerating his role in  US civil rights marches during the 1960s.
