start planning: let it rip — kick scomo out...

melburn...melburn...

I have scant sympathy for a high-profile person with such disregard for the health and safety rules of his own country, let alone those of others (“Game, set and vax as court says Djokovic must leave”, January 17). If he didn’t comply with our health rules, he should not have been given a visa in the first place. If nothing else, perhaps the government could publish a full-page ad setting out the rules. But I’d have preferred the government had better protected our nation by keeping Omicron out in the first place but once it was here, it should have continued mandating PPE and the safeguards that stopped Delta, rather than tossing Novak Djokovic out in a rear-guard action. Peter Thornton, Killara

Nothing that I have read or heard explains why Djokovic was given a visa in the first place by those who had the time to scrutinise his application and consult their superiors ( including the Immigration Minister) on the merits or otherwise of granting such a prominent applicant one, in light of his stance, which has only now been declared as one that possibly “put lives and civil order at risk”. What all of this demonstrates to others who want to enter our country is that our visas aren’t worth a pinch of salt. The only good thing to have come out of this is the light it has shone on the plight of Djokovic’s fellow detainees, the refugees deprived of any sort of life through their interminable incarceration by our inhumane government. Anne Ring, Coogee

In assessing whether Minister Alex Hawke acted reasonably and rationally, the Federal Court acted reasonably and rationally based on the best available evidence. What a pity it doesn’t have the power to set government policy on fighting global warming. Howard Charles, Annandale

To cancel, then reinstate Djokovic’s visa the first time around was following procedure. The second cancellation was strictly political and reflected a “stop the boats” mentality. It was an opportunity lost for Australia to disagree with Djokovic’s beliefs but to also find common ground to enable him to compete in Melbourne. The federal government chose black or white over compromise, as is the situation with the Biloela family and refugees languishing in detention for nine years. David Goldstein, Balgowlah

I suppose we’ll see the announcement of the official inquiry into how Novak Djokovic was allowed on to a plane about the same time as we see the model for an effective federal corruption watchdog. Jeremy Cornford, Kingscliff

hunt: epitome of scomo's incompetence...

It’s too early to tell if the peak of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been reached but signs are pointing to a plateau, Health Minister Greg Hunt says.

Mr Hunt told ABC Radio National on Monday he had received advice from chief medical officer Paul Kelly there were “clear signs” of a plateau of cases and hospitalisations in NSW and the ACT.

But he said it was still too early to call the peak of the wave.

Mr Hunt said the government was preparing for possible future waves by securing more vaccination doses and treatments.

“I would like to see, and it’s something Moderna is working on, is the capacity to have combined flu and COVID-19 shots as we go forward,” he said.

“That won’t happen immediately but it is something being prepared.”

On Monday NSW had 29,504 new cases and 17 deaths (down from 34,660 and 20 deaths on Sunday). Victoria had a further 22,429 new cases and six deaths (down from Sunday’s 28,128 and 13 fatalities).

One of the alternative title for this comment was "surfing omoron wave with scomo's little helper". And by now we know that Perrottet "stay the course, be strong (NSW)" is as useful as a bottomless garbage can.

isolate scomo...

You've been feeling off and have taken a rapid test to see if you've got COVID-19. When the 15 minutes is up, there are two little red lines on the reactive strip.

You're COVID-positive and the next week probably won't be much fun.

Here are some things to think about.

How do I isolate if I live with other people?

For starters, go home and stay there. In most of the country, you'll be required to isolate for seven days from the date you got a test.

At the end of your isolation period, you'll be allowed out if your symptoms have ceased.

In the meantime, you'll need to remain separated, not just from the community, but also from other people who live with you.

NSW Health recommends avoiding common areas, sleeping alone and using a separate bathroom if these options are available to you.

visa capers...

I don't care whether the Djoker could have stayed in Australia or not — but, when considering that "we" sent humans on the moon 63 YEARS AGO, and that computer/information technology has gone stratospheric in capability, the incompetence of the Australian government (and its depleted public service) is astonishing. Should you smell of cat-piss before landing in Australia, the dogs of dishing out visas should be able to refuse entry (or better: refuse departure from initial station) forthwith.

But a visa HAD BEEN GIVEN to the Djoker. So whether he "lied" or not on his entry form, is irrelevant — because this was a) open to interpretation and b) discovered much later when the visa was scrutinised to find a pair of fornicating sick bugs in a haystack. The system should be able to connect the dots like in an Emmy Noether equation, before anything blows up, but this would not create the desire effect of appearing to be sticklers for the "laws of the land" which are flaunted every day by the ScoMo government anyway.

Noether was a mathematician who discovered perhaps the most profound idea in contemporary physics. Noether’s theorem, which she formulated in 1915, says that symmetries in the universe give rise to mathematical conservation laws. This statement is a crucial underpinning of physical laws, from those that govern the rotation of a wheel or the orbits of planets around stars, to the intricate mathematical frameworks of general relativity, quantum physics and particle physics.

Quantum particles — and visas... All we had from the ScoMo government was another fucup, while those from the Visa department, DFAT and the PM's office passed-the-parcel of blame onto everyone else. Systemic failure — in this age of beyond-the-pale super-electronic verification and passwords like keys to your own jail — is unforgivable. Everyone involve in this saga, including the tennis balls and the rackets, should be sacked (ScoMo included). The whole thing seemed to have been a political RACKET to make ScoMo appear like Solomon, while he became (is) no more than a rotten smelly greasy salmon that amazingly can still talk rubbish under water.

And please, don't bash the little employees who may have had their head kicked in, should "they not approve" the visa in the first place...
