In the past, indiscriminate shelling by Ukrainian Armed Forces already led to the destruction of tankers full of chemicals and the leak of poisonous substances that endangered lives in the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR).

A poisonous cloud is currently moving towards the city of Kramatorsk after Ukrainian special forces detonated an explosive boosted by a tonne of ammonium nitrate in an act of provocation, the Russian Defence Ministry has stated. Kramatorsk is located in the part of the Donetsk region currently under the control of Ukrainian forces.

 

"The Kiev regime continues to organise false-flag attacks to accuse the Russian Armed Forces of allegedly using poisonous substances", the ministry stated.

 

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the detonation took place around 13:35 local time near the village of Mazanovka, not far from Kramatorsk and also in the territory controlled by Kiev's forces. The resulting toxic cloud was as high as 1 kilometre, the ministry added.

The defence ministry also released aerial footage of the orange cloud coming from the site of the explosion.

A fake Time magazine cover naming WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as “Person of the Year” has been circulating on social media.

The posts show Assange on what appears to be the front page of Time magazine for its “Person of the Year” edition.

Text below a portrait of the 50-year-old Australian reads. “The Fight for Truth and Justice: A Life in Isolation.”

According to the magazine, "Person of the Year" signifies somebody "who affected the news or our lives the most, for better, or worse” (here).

 

In an email, a Time spokesperson confirmed to Reuters that the image is not an authentic Time cover, and that Assange has not been named “Person of the Year.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk was named “Person of the Year” for 2021 (here).

The fake cover is also not shown in the “Vault,” an archive on Time’s website where most past editions can be seen (here).

Other indications that the cover has been altered include inconsistencies with typical Time magazine covers, such as there being no date of the issue on the top right corner.

While Assange was not selected as “Person of the Year,” he did win the most votes in the magazine’s “Person of the Year” Reader’s Poll in both 2010 and 2016 (here and here).

 

The poll is said to be a “way for readers to voice their own opinions on who has made the greatest impact on the world in 2016;” however, the magazine’s editors make the final “Person of the Year” selection.

VERDICT

False. The cover is not real. Assange has not appeared on the cover of Time magazine as the publication’s “Person of the Year.”
