Beijing warned on Monday it would take all necessary measures to defend its territorial integrity, and urged Washington not to “underestimate” the resolve of the Chinese people.

The rebuke came hours after US President Joe Biden vowed to use military force to defend Taiwan if necessary. China considers Taiwan an inalienable part if its territory.

“The Taiwan issue is a purely internal affair for China,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters, adding: “on issues touching on China’s core interests of sovereignty and territorial integrity, China has no room for compromise or concession.”

China has asked the US to “earnestly abide” by the “One China” policy, under which the US and other nations recognize that there is only one China, led by Beijing. The Chinese government will take “resolute actions” to protect its sovereignty and security interests, the ministry spokesman said.

“No one should underestimate the firm resolve, staunch will and strong ability of the Chinese people in defending national sovereignty,” he added.

Earlier on Monday, Joe Biden said Washington could intervene militarily in case of a conflict between China and Taiwan, calling it America’s “commitment.” The president insisted that the US abides by the ‘One China’ policy but that Beijing has “no jurisdiction” that would allow it to “go in” and use force against Taiwan. Biden also criticized China’s increasingly assertive stance on Taiwan by accusing Beijing of “flirting with danger.”

Joe’s got his war face on. His war face is, however, a national secret.

Imagine that we are at war with Russia ostensibly to defend the territorial integrity of the Ukraine while also ready to go to war with China to violate their territorial integrity.

If borders are sacred, why are we flagrantly violating China’s borders?

China’s growing economic and military power and political and diplomatic clout have sparked serious concerns among US policymakers in recent years. On Thursday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed that the US plans to use the bloc of nations it has cobbled together to confront Russia over Ukraine to challenge China as well.

Beijing’s new ‘Global Security Initiative’ concept poses a direct challenge to the US-dominated world order of a kind “unusual” for the People’s Republic, which has previously focused its global ventures on issues like development and trade, the Financial Times has reported, citing international relations experts who have studied the idea.

Chinese President Xi Jinping first proposed the GSI concept in April, providing few details before bringing it up again in an address to the foreign ministers of the BRICS countries last week, when he called on members to “strengthen” their “political mutual trust and security cooperation, maintain close communication and coordination on major international and regional issues.”

The BRICS, Xi said, should “accommodate each other’s core interests and major concerns, respect each other’s sovereignty, security and development interests, oppose hegemonism and power politics, reject Cold War mentality and bloc confrontation and work together to build a global community of security for all.”

Non-BRICS countries across the world, from Cuba, Nicaragua and Uruguay in Latin America to Syria in the Middle East and Pakistan and Indonesia in Asia have publicly expressed support for the GSI, signaling its importance beyond a mere statement of goals or general policy guidelines.

“Previously, when Chinese officials spoke about how the conflicts and security issues in the world would be resolved, the front foot was development. The answer was to provide prosperity to those troubled regions. But now there is a reprioritization,” Bates Gill, a professor of Asia-Pacific security studies at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, said of the GSI and its “security” focus.

An anonymous Chinese scholar advising the government indicated that the GSI was part of a broader effort by President Xi to “steer the global security order away from Cold War thinking” since 2014 and the beginning of the Ukraine crisis.

Tackling Blinken's speech, Wang Yi takes aim at outdated vision of world

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday slammed a speech by the United States' top diplomat on the White House's China policy. The US' views on the world, China and China-US relations are seriously miscalibrated, Wang said.

In the speech on Thursday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described China as "the most serious long-term challenge to the international order" and said that Washington would compete with Beijing with "increased investments at home and greater alignment with allies and partners".

In response, Wang said the world is not the one the US depicts. He said Washington has, in effect, become a source of instability undermining the international order and an obstacle to promoting greater democracy in international relations.

The most pressing task facing the international community is to safeguard the lives and health of people, advance the global economic recovery and uphold world peace and tranquility, Wang said.

That task requires a sense of a community with a shared future, together with real efforts to put the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter into practice, he added.

In contrast, Washington is sticking with centrism and the country's own sense of its exceptionalism, along with a Cold War mentality, hegemonic logic and the pursuit of bloc politics. This attitude, Wang said, will only lead to "conflict, confrontation and division in the international community".

"China is not the country visualized by the US," said Wang, adding that the country's modernization drive to benefit its 1.4 billion people marks out "tremendous progress" for humanity, and is not a "threat or challenge" to the world.

He reaffirmed that China's goal is to deliver a better life for people and make greater contributions to the world, not to "replace or challenge anyone else".

"The China-US relationship is not the zero-sum game designed by the US", said Wang, who called for Washington to focus on the three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.

Wang stressed that competition between China and the US should not be vicious. "China stands ready for fair competition on who can run the country better and who can contribute more to the world," he said.

He vowed that China would never yield to blackmail or coercion, and would steadfastly safeguard its sovereignty, security and development interests.
