French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Moscow to return to peace negotiations, while at the same time pledging additional military support for Kiev amid the ongoing escalation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Speaking to the France 2 broadcaster on Wednesday, Macron condemned the large-scale missile attack launched by Russia against Ukraine’s critical infrastructure in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on the Crimea bridge. The missile strikes have shown that the conflict has entered “an unprecedented stage,” Macron asserted, claiming that “for the first time all over Ukraine civilians have been killed ... and electricity and heating facilities have been destroyed.”

“We’re going to deliver ... radars, systems and missiles to protect them from these attacks,” Macron said, adding that France is also negotiating delivery of six additional Caesar self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine. The artillery pieces were originally built for Denmark.

The French leader admitted that Paris “was unable to deliver as much as the Ukrainians ask for,” explaining that the country has to keep some weaponry “to protect ourselves and eastern flank” of the US-led NATO block. “Today, first of all, Vladimir Putin must stop this war, respect Ukraine's territorial integrity and come back to the table for talks,” Macron said.

Macron's call for a return to talks comes despite Moscow's repeated assertions that it is ready to negotiate and that it was the Ukrainian delegation that ended talks peace talks in Istanbul.

When reminded of this Macron stated that negotiations “will be necessary” at some unspecified point in the future. “That’s why I have always refused maximalist positions,” he added.

MEANWHILE:

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky refuses to negotiate a peace settlement as long as Vladimir Putin remains president of Russia. He made this claim in a post on his official Telegram channel on Friday. 

Claiming he had “always offered Russia coexistence on equal, honest, dignified and fair terms,” Zelensky blamed Russia for the failure of negotiations, insisting that it was “obvious this is impossible with this Russian president.” 

“We are ready for a dialogue with Russia, but … with another president of Russia,” he wrote. Unlike the majority of his Telegram posts, this one was written only in Ukrainian, without an accompanying English translation.

President Emmanuel Macron revealed too much when he said France would not respond to the use of nuclear weapons by Russia in Ukraine with its own arsenal of nukes, British defense secretary, Ben Wallace has said.

Macron pointed out in an interview on Wednesday that his country’s nuclear doctrine “rests on the fundamental interests of the nation. They are defined clearly and wouldn’t be directly affected at all if, for example, there was a ballistic nuclear attack in Ukraine, in the region.” The French leader also tweeted on the same day that France does “not want a world war.”

Wallace was asked about the French president’s comments as he attended a meeting of NATO ministers in Brussels on Thursday. “It reveals President Macron’s hand,” he said.

“Our view is if Russia were to use a nuclear weapon, there would be severe consequences for Russia,” the defense secretary explained.

Unnamed NATO officials also told The Telegraph newspaper that Macron’s words threatened the “principles of deterrence.” The sources pointed out that “we don’t go into details on scenarios.”
