As hundreds of Forbes residents waited for floodwaters to peak on Thursday, the owner of the town’s hardware store was catching yabbies in her flooded shop.

Mitre 10 owner Jacinda Acheson described it as “the most Australian thing ever”.

“They’re just in the water. Right now I can see one, two, three, four, five, six of them,” she said.

The NSW State Emergency Service said between 300 and 500 homes had so far been affected by floodwaters.

Flood experts believe the Lachlan River had peaked on Thursday morning, after holding steady at 10.68 metres, according to Forbes mayor Phyllis Miller.
