Maria Pirogova, a veteran volunteer and MP in the local people’s council, was killed in the city of Donetsk on Tuesday as the result of artillery shelling and rocket attacks by the Ukrainian military. A statement on her death was released by the acting head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), Denis Pushilin.

Pirogova is among at least six civilians killed across the city that day.

The lawmaker’s death was an “enormous loss for all of us,” Pushilin said, extending his condolences to Maria’s family and friends.

“In 2014, when she was only 21 years old, she began to help people. She gathered things, delivered them herself to those in need, and was not afraid to go to the most dangerous places to help others,” Pushilin wrote on his Telegram channel, praising the late politician as the “epitome of kindness” with an exceptional “talent at doing good.”

Pirogova was killed as Kiev’s forces subjected Donetsk to a new round of rocket and artillery attacks, targeting multiple locations across the city. According to the city’s mayor, Aleksey Kulemzin, Ukrainian troops hit a business center, a market, the Donbass arena, a sports complex, several shopping centers, a bus station, a cathedral, the local prosecutor’s office, and multiple residential buildings. The attacks left at least six civilians dead and several wounded.

Donetsk has been subjected to heavy artillery and missile attacks by Ukrainian forces on an almost daily basis since Russia launched its military operation in late February. Since 2014, when the Donbass conflict broke out in the aftermath of the Maidan coup in Kiev, the city has endured years of low-intensity fighting and sporadic shelling by the Ukrainian military.

Earlier this year, the DPR and the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), as well as Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions, formally joined Russia following overwhelming support in local referendums.

Ukraine’s supreme court has ruled that the symbols of the infamous 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, also known as the 1st Galician Division, are not Nazi and therefore not banned in the country.

The top court upheld an earlier ruling on the matter, ending a years-long legal battle over the controversial legacy of the notorious formation, comprised primarily of ethnic Ukrainians.

The ruling has been praised by the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, which operates under Ukraine’s cabinet of ministers, and has long claimed the unit’s fighters were not actual Nazi collaborators, but merely “freedom fighters.”

In early 2020, a Kiev court ruled the Institute’s assessment of the unit as a “non-Nazi” force to be illegal, but the decision was overruled by a higher tier tribunal later that year. 

“The Supreme Court has put to an end a long judicial battle initiated some five years ago,”Vyacheslav Yakubenko, a lawyer representing the Institute, said in a Facebook post.

Technically, both Communist and Nazi paraphernalia have been outlawed in Ukraine since 2015. Meanwhile, Kiev has recognized multiple Ukrainian nationalist organizations and historical figures, including well-known Nazi collaborators, as national heroes.

Despite the formal ban on Nazi imagery, it has been routinely displayed by members of Ukraine’s military and assorted nationalist groups, apparently without repercussions.

The 1st Galician Division is best-known for committing war crimes against Polish civilians during WWII. The flags and patches of the division have been repeatedly displayed by Ukrainian nationalists and servicemen alike, even making it into official pictures released by Kiev.

Ukraine denies the presence of neo-Nazi elements in the country’s armed forces, dismissing such assertions – as well as the goal to “denazify” Ukraine proclaimed by Moscow – as Russian “propaganda.”

Apart from those of the Galicia division, Ukrainian servicemen have also been spotted wearing patches of the notorious 36th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, one of the worst Nazi penal units, the 3rd SS Panzer Division ‘Totenkopf’, and assorted swastikas and other far-right hate symbols.

Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA), the head of the House Armed Services Committee, said Saturday that the growing calls for more oversight of the billions of dollars the US is spending on Ukraine are “part of Russian propaganda.”

While the majority of Republicans strongly favor continuing to arm Ukraine, even the more hawkish GOP members have said they favor increased oversight for the aid. Smith said that the concern from Republicans for more transparency “makes me a little crazy.”

“Ukraine is spending the money really well; that’s why they’re winning,” Smith said at the Reagan National Defense Forum, according to Defense News. “Yes, we need oversight, but we don’t need that as an excuse to not fund what we’re doing.”

Last month, a small group of House Republicans opposed to arming Ukraine led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced a bill that would require an audit of the funds that the US has spent on the war so far. Greene said that if she needed to, she would reintroduce the legislation after the next Congress is sworn in this January.

The White House is looking for Congress to approve $37.7 billion in new Ukraine aid during the lame-duck period. If authorized, the new funds will bring total US spending on a proxy war on Russia’s border to about $105 billion.

Russia and Turkey have dealt a blow to the image of Europe
