In May 1943, a specially trained Royal Air Force bomber unit conducted a raid that breached two major German dams in the Ruhr Valley. The “dam busters” attack resulted in the destruction of hydroelectric power stations, mines and factories and killed around 1600 civilians. It was designed to reduce German wartime production in the critical Ruhr region. RAF planners also hoped the raid would draw German military resources away from the front line.

A lot of the people who comment on this blog seem to me to be patriotic Americans. And, it’s clear, if you read the comments, that many of them – probably the majority – want Russia to win the war. This is not because they like Putin or Russia particularly, and certainly not because they’re on the “Putin payroll”. Not at all. These people understand what is really at stake.

These are people who know that the American war party (one of many names – deep state, borg, neocons, one percent, MICIMAC) is responsible for pushing Russia to the decision that it made last February. That it is the war party that expanded NATO despite the promises, that arms Ukraine, that encourages the fanatics driving that country, that blocks all routes to a peaceful settlement, that encourages Kiev to squander the lives of its people. But what really concerns these patriotic Americans is the damage the war party has done to their country.

The fundamental maxims of her policy would insensibly change from liberty to force… She might become the dictatress of the world. She would be no longer the ruler of her own spirit…

An America of war all the time everywhere, of tent cities and full jails, of open borders, disappeared manufacturing, opiates, misery, poverty, corruption. An America with endless money to spend abroad but none to spend at home. (The hundred billion dollars dumped into Ukraine would give a $200,000 house to every one of the estimated half million homeless in the USA!) An America failing, no longer the American they loved, served and believed in. The Twitter revelations show some of the activities of this enemy embedded in the American polity. It’s very late and many fear that it is too late.

How to get this leech off America’s back? Voting can’t make much difference if both parties are manipulated. Is the voting system itself corrupted? Can the judicial system be trusted? Special counsels who report when it’s too late to matter? The managed media? Some may still believe in these things but the people I’m talking about don’t any more.

They can only see one way that the power of this internal enemy can be broken – complete and utter defeat. Defeat that cannot be ignored, cannot be explained away, defeat too big and too obvious for the obedient mass media to bury.

And that is why these people want Russia to win. They don’t necessarily like Russia or Putin or dislike Ukraine – it has little to do with either. It’s because they see this as the opportunity for the humiliating defeat that will shatter the power of the internal enemy. The war party assumed that Russia was weak and sanctions would crash its economy and bring down Putin. When this didn’t happen, they doubled down on their failed bet arrogantly certain they were right because everybody they allowed to speak agreed with them. If (when) Russia scores a decisive and undeniable victory, the perpetrators of the disaster will be revealed as corrupt fools wasting your money on their worthless fantasy.

Russia is also fighting a bigger war against the so-called rules-based international order. This shiny label covers the assertion that whatever America and its allies/subordinates do is right and whatever its opponents do is wrong and is the war party’s license to interfere everywhere. The hope is that the defeat – following on the Afghanistan debacle – will so weaken the war party that it will fall.

This far I have talked of patriotic Americans wanting Russia to win but I believe that every country in the West has people who also want Russia to win because utter, obvious and undeniable defeat is the only way that they can see to get their leeches off their backs.

The West is ruled by corrupt fools who are sending it to disaster – it is circling the drain of history. The hope is that Russian victory will burst the bubble, the internal enemy will be got rid of and these countries will start to mind their own business, care for their own populations and forget about the (mostly imaginary) monsters out there.

The official added: “Bakhmut will not change the war”.

I believe the senior US official is absolutely wrong. 

Soledar and Bakhmut bleed the Ukrainian army dry. It is relevant. Look at the insane number of Ukrainian units deployed on this sector of the front only 50 kilometres long.

 

 

I count the equivalent of some 27 brigade-sized formations in that area. The usual size of a brigade is around 3000 to 4000 men with hundreds of vehicles of all kinds. If all the brigades were at full strength, this force would amount to 97,500 men. 

In a recent interview, Ukrainian military commander Zaluzhny said his army has 200,000 combat-trained men while another 500,000 have other duties or are currently in training. The forces that are currently in the Bakhmut region constitute 50% of the combat-ready Ukrainian forces.

Zaluzhny withdrew units from other fronts like the Kreminna and Svatove sector further north in Luhansk Province to supply Bakhmut. This has reduced any chance that Ukrainian forces in these areas will be able to make progress.

Almost all reports from Ukraine [and media in the West] seem to ignore the enormous damage that Russian artillery causes on a daily basis. 

Ukraine has little artillery to respond to this and all it still has is dwindling day by day.

A few weeks ago, the Russian army launched a systematic counter-artillery campaign which has since made great progress. 

The typical Western way of detecting enemy artillery units is by radar. The projectile's flight path is measured and the coordinates of its source are calculated allowing its own artillery to react. But the counter-artillery radar itself depends on radiation. It is thus easily detectable and vulnerable to fire. 

Over the past few months, Russia has deployed a very different counter-artillery detection system with the rather tongue-in-cheek name penicillin. Penicillin or Penicillin 1B75 is an acoustic-thermal artillery reconnaissance system developed by Ruselectronics for the Russian Armed Forces. The system aims to detect and locate enemy artillery, mortars, MLRs, anti-aircraft or tactical missile firing positions with seismic and acoustic sensors, without emitting radio waves. 

It locates enemy fire within 5 seconds at a distance of 25 km (16 mi; 13 nmi). Penicillin completed testing in December 2018 and entered combat service in 2020.

Penicillin is mounted on a 8×8 Kamaz-6350 chassis and consists of a suite of 1B75 sensors placed on a telescopic boom for the infrared and visible spectrum as well as several seismic and acoustic receivers installed on the ground as part of the suite of 1B76 sensors. It has an effective range for communication with other military assets up to 40 kilometres (25 mi) and is capable of operating even in fully automatic mode, without any crew. One system can apparently cover an entire division against enemy fire. In addition, it coordinates and corrects Russia’s own artillery fire.

The Penicillin System can hide in the woods and hold its telescopic pole to watch and listen to the battlefield. Since it doesn't radiate, there's no good way for an enemy to detect it.

The system spots Ukrainian guns as they fire. They are then eliminated by an immediate and precise counter-fire. As asserted by the relevant part of the artillery of the list of clobbers provided by the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Ukrainian counter-battery fire against Russian artillery is no longer possible as the necessary detection equipment is eliminated and Ukrainian counter-fire is shot down by Russian air defenses.

This Russian counter-artillery campaign has been going on for several weeks. It disabled much of what was left of the longer range Ukrainian capabilities. 

Meanwhile, Russian artillery continues to shoot down Ukrainian troops holding the front line. Only when all parts of the Ukrainian trenches have been hit by intense fire will the Russian infantry move in to clear what remains.

This form of battle causes huge casualties on the Ukrainian side while the Russian forces incur minimal casualties.

We can say that Ukraine has now lost the nominal equipment of two large armies.

At the start of the war, the Ukrainian army had approximately 2,500 tanks, 12,500 armoured vehicles and 3,500 large artillery systems. It is doubtful that more than half of them were in serviceable condition, but they may have received enough repairs to be serviceable.

The Russian army claims that most of them have been eliminated :

7,549 tanks and other armored fighting vehicles, 984 MLRS-equipped fighting vehicles, 3,853 field artillery guns and mortars, as well as 8,081 units of special military equipment were destroyed during the special military operation.

In an interview with The Economist, General Zeluzhny asked that a third army be delivered to him immediately:

"I know I can beat this enemy," he said. “But I need resources. I need 300 tanks, 600 to700 IFVs [infantry fighting vehicles], 500 howitzers…”

The journalist from The Economist dryly noted:

“The additional arsenal he seeks is larger than the total armoured forces of most European armies.”

Ukrainian forces have acknowledged "stepping back" from the bitterly contested Donbas town of Soledar, captured by Russian forces last week in their first significant victory after many months in retreat. But soldiers have told the BBC they've pulled back in a controlled and tactical move before a planned counter-attack. 

Long bursts of automatic gunfire rattled across the grey, stubbled fields on the front line between Soledar and the neighbouring town of Bakhmut, during an intense gun and artillery battle.

"It's quite close. One kilometre," said a tall Ukrainian unit commander named Andriy, peering around the corner of a ruined cottage and towards a dark line of trees to the east.

It was impossible to be sure what was happening. But the sound of automatic gunfire, zinging overhead, in addition to the constant boom of rockets and artillery, suggested that Russian infantry were close. A press officer for the 46th Air Assault Brigade, who was accompanying us on a visit to the area, said the front lines were constantly shifting, unpredictably, sometimes by several kilometres a day.

"We have a tough situation here," Andriy acknowledged, before slipping into a well-disguised command bunker hidden amid the ruins. His team had just received detailed information about a Russian armoured personnel carrier (APC), spotted by a Ukrainian drone. Moments later, there were three loud outgoing blasts from a nearby UK-supplied light artillery piece, used here by Ukrainian forces, and aimed at the vehicle.

"Every day we destroy 50 or 100 enemy people," Andriy claimed.
