US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley, the highest-ranking officer in the American armed forces, met with Ukrainian soldiers undergoing Pentagon training at a base in Germany, where Washington recently stepped up efforts to prepare foreign troops for combat.
The general visited the US Army’s Grafenwoehr Training Area in the German state of Bavaria for just shy of two hours on Monday, overseeing training operations with Ukrainian soldiers and their American instructors.
“This is not a run-of-the-mill rotation. This is one of those moments in time where if you want to make a difference, this is it,” Milley said during a meeting with commanders.
Though journalists were allowed access to the training site, they were reportedly barred from filming or photographing the general as he spoke with Ukrainians, or from relaying the contents of their conversations.
The trip coincided with an expansion of the US training program for Ukrainian troops at the Grafenwoehr base just one day prior, with Milley saying the Pentagon now hopes to turn out 500 combat-ready soldiers in five to eight weeks. He added that the program would focus on combined arms training – referring to battlefield cooperation between infantry, armor, artillery and aerial units.
The Ukrainian soldiers will receive instruction on a wide variety of arms and equipment over the next several weeks, including the Bradley Fighting Vehicles contained in the latest $3 billion US arms package for Kiev. Milley noted that the Pentagon has offered similar training to Ukrainian soldiers since before the current conflict erupted, but said American advisers have been more focused on instruction for certain US-supplied gear since last February.
However, despite around $25 billion in direct military aid being approved by the White House since last February, Kiev has clamored for additional supplies, specifically requesting heavy armor such as the M1 Abrams main battle tank. Washington appears unwilling to grant that wish for now.

Aleksey Arestovich apologized for disclosing that Ukrainian defenses brought down Russian missile that caused a deadly explosion in DneprA high-profile adviser to President Vladimir Zelensky has tendered his resignation, having admitted live on air that Ukrainian forces had shot down a Russian missile over the city of Dnepr before it reportedly landed on an apartment block, killing dozens. The remark has landed Aleksey Arestovich in hot water, as commenters claimed he was blaming the Ukrainian military for the deaths.
Arestovich shared his handwritten letter of resignation, addressed to Andrey Yermak, Zelensky’s chief-of-staff, on Tuesday morning. He claimed he was showing “an example of civilized behavior” by leaving his position in the Ukrainian government. Later in the day, Zelensky’s office confirmed that Arestovich’s request had been accepted.
The presidential aide previously described his remark as “a serious mistake, made during a live broadcast.”
“The level of hate directed at me is incomparable with the consequences of the on-air mistake,”Arestovich said. He offered apologies to those “deeply hurt” by his words, but not “to the people who are spinning this issue.”

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry denied having engaged the projectile and claimed that, in the first place, it didn’t have the capability to intercept Kh-22 air-launched cruise missiles. It claimed that its previous statements that some missiles of that model had been intercepted were “inaccurate.”

Yurii Ihnat, Spokesperson of the Air Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine made this statement at a briefing at Media Center Ukraine — Ukrinform.
“Missiles flew to different regions of Ukraine. First and foremost, the enemy was trying to hit critical infrastructure facilities and other targets. We can see that a residential building in Dnipro, which was hit by a Kh-22 missile, was also targeted. I emphasize that it is impossible to shoot down Kh-22 missiles with the means we have in our arsenal,” — Ihnat said.
The Spokesman said that according to Lieutenant General Mykola Oleschuk, the Commander of Ukraine’s Air Force, since December 24, more than 210 missiles of this type have been launched on the territory of Ukraine.
“None was destroyed. They may have fallen by themselves before getting (to their targets), because the weapons are outdated not only morally, but also physically. And their efficiency depends on how well they are stored. Many simply fell in the fields without getting (to their targets). Maybe that’s how they were included into the statistics of shot down (missiles),” — Ihnat added.
