THERE IS A disturbing aspect to the discourse ABOUT THE UKRAINE/RUSSIA SITUATION AT THE INTERCEPT. DESPITE MENTIONING THAT THE GROUP-THINKS OVER THE WAR IN UKRAINE ARE DISTURBING, THE INTERCEPT CANNOT LET GO OF THE CORE JUSTIFICATION OF ALL THE WARRING GROUP-THINKS OF THE WEST, THAT RUSSIA INTERVENED ILLEGALLY FOR NO REASON. 

IT’S SAD AND IRRITATING, BECAUSE NO MATTER HOW ONE PERMUTES THE WAY THE RUSSIAN INTERVENTION (OR WHATEVER VERNACULAR WE CHOOSE) IT WAS A SET UP BY NATO AND THE USA AND DESIGNED TO PROVOKE THIS SITUATION. 

RUSSIA ONLY WENT IN RELUCTANTLY TO DEFEND RUSSIAN PEOPLE IN UKRAINE. WE CAN ARGUE THAT THE WAY PUTIN AND HIS COHORTS DID IT WAS UNCOUTH. BUT ON ANALYSIS IT WAS THE ONLY WAY TO MINIMISE THE NUMBER OF DEAD “INNOCENT” PEOPLE.

HAD PUTIN WAITED FOR THE INVASION OF THE DONBASS REGION BY THE UKRAINIAN ARMY — ALREADY PREPARED TO ATTACK THE DONBASS WITH MORE THAN 60,000 TROOPS BY EARLY MARCH 2022, WITH ABOUT 600,000 UKRAINIAN SOLDIERS READY TO FOLLOW — THE RUSSIANS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONTAIN THIS ASSAULT — FROM BEHIND THE DONBASS/RUSSIA BORDER.

THE RESULT WOULD HAVE BEEN HORRENDOUS: BETWEEN 50,000 AND HALF A MILLION DEAD UKRAINIAN/RUSSIANS IN THE DONBASS REGION.

THIS WAS THE FULL TRAP SET BY THE USA AND BY NATO, FOR RUSSIA TO FALL INTO. 

THE RUSSIANS TOOK THE INITIATIVE — BEFORE THE TRAP HAD BEEN FULLY SET. TWO DAYS BEFORE THE RUSSIAN “INVASION”, THE SO-THREATENED DONBASS PROVINCES WERE DECLARED INDEPENDENT COUNTRIES BY RUSSIA. BY THEN RUSSIA COULD IMPLEMENT UN #2202 TO DEFEND THESE COUNTRIES.

FROM KERSON TO KHARKIV, THE SMALL RUSSIAN ARMY JOINED WITH THE LOCAL DEFENDERS AND TOOK POSITIONS AGAINST THE UKRAINIAN SOLDIERS THAT WERE ALSO RATTLED BY MANY DIVERSIONS. 

FIRST, WITHIN A FEW WEEKS, NEARLY ALL THE UKRAINIAN WEAPON STOCKS WERE DESTROYED BY RUSSIA. THE RUSSIAN KNEW WHERE THESE WERE.

SECOND, KIEV “WAS BEING ATTACKED” BY RUSSIAN TROOPS. THIS DIVERSION DEMANDED A LOT OF THE UKRAINIAN TROOPS TO MOVE AWAY FROM THE DONBASS FRONT, WHICH ALLOWED THE RUSSIANS TO SET UP BETTER POSITIONS TO DEFEND THE DONBASS, AGAINST A UKRAINIAN INVASION/COUNTEROFFENSIVE.

SO, NO MATTER WHAT THE INTERCEPT SAYS, RUSSIA HAD THE MORAL RIGHT TO INTERVENE.

BY CONTINUING THE SUPPLY OF WEAPONS TO THE KIEV LOOSING SIDE, THE WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE PLACING THEMSELVES AT THE MERCY OF THEIR SOCIOPATHIC STUPID LEADERS, FROM JOE BIDEN, MANU MACRON AND OLAF SCHOLZ. ZELENSKY BEING ONE OF THE MOST UNINTELLIGENT PERSON ON EARTH.

THERE IS A disturbing aspect to the discourse in Washington, D.C., and European capitals surrounding the war in Ukraine that seeks to quash any dissent from the official narrative surrounding NATO’s military support for Ukraine. As the world was thrust into Cold War 2.0, the Western commentariat dusted off the wide brush wielded for decades by the cold warriors of old, labeling critics of the policy of massive weapons transfers to Ukraine or unquestioning support for the government of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Russian stooges or puppets. This is a dangerous trend that encourages groupthink over a potentially nuclear conflict.

Citizens have every right to question the role of their governments, particularly in times of war. Some of the dynamics around policing criticism of Zelenskyy or the Ukrainian government or the U.S. support for it are reminiscent of the efforts to stifle criticism of Israel through charges of antisemitism. Not only is this an intellectually bankrupt line of attack, but it also runs contrary to the vital principle of free debate in democratic societies. It also seeks to relegate to a dungeon of insignificance the vast U.S. record of foreign policy, military, and intelligence catastrophes as well as its abuses and crimes by pretending that only lackeys for Moscow would dare question our role in a foreign conflict on the other side of the globe.

Russia is hardly a victim here. Vladimir Putin seems comfortable abetting a new cold war, and his unjustified attack against Ukraine [READ GUS’S INTRO AT TOP] has offered the U.S. and NATO a golden ticket to ratchet up militarism, European defense spending, and weapons production. At the same time, it is true, as Moscow alleges, that Russia is fighting not just Ukraine, but also NATO infrastructure. It is also true that prominent sectors of the U.S. security state want this war primarily to bleed Russia, and last year the White House had to walk back President Joe Biden’s off-the-cuff remark about Putin: “For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power.” The whole enterprise is an incredible boondoggle for the war industry, which now gets no-bid contracts baked in to build the defense “industrial base.”

RUSSIA IS A VICTIM OF THE NATO/US/UK/EU HEGEMONY. IN THIS REGARD, THE INTERCEPT IS LIKE MANY OF THE WISHY-WISHY THINK-TANKS THAT ARE NOT PREPARED TO FULLY BLAME THE WEST FOR THE PROBLEM TO GIVE THEMSELVES A MORAL HIGH-GROUND.

RUSSIA WAS UNDER ATTACK VIA UKRAINE AND RUSSIA HAD TO DEFEND. 

THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED HAD THE USA STUDIED CAREFULLY THE PROPOSALS OF PEACE MADE BY RUSSIA IN DECEMBER 2021. 

NATO CANNOT SETTLE IN UKRAINE WITH NUCLEAR WEAPONS 200 MILES FROM MOSCOW. FULL STOP.
