On Tuesday, the French president lunched with four researchers who project the country toward an 'ecological civilization.' From their discussion, Macron took away the controversial term 'decivilization.'

Emmanuel Macron is looking sensors. Two weeks after renewing ties with the economists who supported him in his 2017 electoral conquest, the French president hosted a "luncheon with sociologists" at the Elysée Palace on Tuesday, May 23, Le Monde has learned. That day, four researchers took their seats in the Salon des Ambassadeurs, where cabinet meetings are usually held every Wednesday: Jean Viard, a sociologist close to Macron and a research director at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS); Philippe Moati, an economics professor who studied the Yellow Vests protest movement; Jérôme Fourquet, the director of opinion polling at IFOP; and Jean-Laurent Cassely, a journalist who co-authored a book with Fourquet(*). The meeting was confidential and participants were asked to hand over their phones upon arrival. "This was not intended to be the subject of a photo in Paris Match," said Cassely, "Nor of an article in Le Monde."

In front of each plate, a card listed the agenda: "Society, consumption, lifestyles." Macron began: "Talk to me about societal transformations," he asked them. After reforming the pensions system by forcing his bill through Parliamentearlier this year, the president is looking to win back public opinion. Better late than never, thought the guests, who were anxious to portray "the France [that buys from] Amazon and [that occupied] roundabouts [during the Yellow Vests protests]," in the words of one attendee. "People want to regain power over time," said Viard, "The problem is not the quantity of work, but the lack of freedom to choose." Macron and his chief of staff Alexis Kohler took notes. According to many Macron supporters, if the French are reluctant to work longer, it is because of a dulled sense of effort and a loss of civic spirit.

Humanity’s best chance to save the planet from climate change lies in locking up white men, Hollywood actress Jane Fonda told an audience at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday.

“This is serious - we’ve got about seven, eight years to cut ourselves in half of what we use of fossil fuels, and unfortunately, the people that have the least responsibility for it are hit the hardest - Global South, people on islands, poor people of color,” the Barbarella star explained, insisting, “It’s a tragedy that we have to absolutely stop.”

We have to arrest and jail those men - they’re all men.

Without naming any of the men she believed to be responsible for the looming demise of the planet, Fonda went on to draw connections between Earth and its minority inhabitants, arguing, “There would be no climate crisis if there was no racism. There would be no climate crisis if there was no patriarchy. White men are the things that matter and then everything else [is] at the bottom.”

“If we solve the climate crisis, and we haven’t solved all those other things, we’re gonna be in trouble,” the Klute actress warned.

Fonda, a frequent environmental campaigner, was arrested several times in 2019 protesting outside the US Capitol alongside other celebrities aiming to bring attention to climate change (and themselves) through civil disobedience.

The actress defended her telegenic lawbreaking from critics who derided the “publicity stunts,” arguing “if you’re a celebrity, you have a responsibility to use that celebrity, especially when the future of mankind is at stake.” Her critics included then-US president Donald Trump, who complained “she's always got the handcuffs on!”

Fonda has engaged in political activism throughout her career, drawing harsh criticism in the 1960s for her outspoken opposition to the Vietnam War. She recently drew attacks following an appearance on The View in which she suggested women resort to “murder” in defense of their right to abortion in the wake of the Supreme Court’s reversal of the Roe v. Wade decision.

France demolishes 7,000-year-old monument to make space for DIY store

Authorities claimed the tourist attraction has little “archaeological value”

Dozens of ancient standing stones in southwest France have been bulldozed to make room for yet another retail outlet of a nationwide chain selling DIY products, triggering uproar among locals.

The historic Montauban site “has been destroyed,” with at least 39 megalithic stones, some estimated to be around 7,000 years old, lost, local archaeologist Christian Obeltz told media this week.

The French commune of Carnac is famous for thousands of so-called menhirs – standing stones erected by neolithic people for purposes that remain a mystery. However, unlike the area’s main tourist attractions of Menec, Kermario and Kerlescan, which are on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites – the set of stones in Montauban, just 1.5 kilometers away, has little historic value, according to local officials.

“Given the uncertain and in any case non-major character of the remains, as revealed by checks, damage to a site of archaeological value has not been established,” the Regional Office of Cultural Affairs for Brittany told AFP news agency in a statement.

The local mayor has insisted that he “followed the law,” and that the construction permit was granted last August only after archaeologists had conducted the required studies.

However, Obeltz claimed there were no “archaeological excavations in order to know if the stones were menhirs or not.” He also accused local authorities of rushing to greenlight the development before activists had finished applying for UNESCO protection.

The popular French retail chain Mr Bricolage, which offers home improvement goods, is currently building a new store at the site. Its spokesperson said the company “sincerely regrets” the incident, but reiterated that authorities granted them full authorization to proceed.
