President Joe Biden’s administration has conceded that Ukrainian military units may be suffering heavy losses of troops and US-supplied weaponry as they ramp up attacks against Russian forces in the Donbass region.
Speaking in a CNN interview on Thursday evening, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said he was reluctant to discuss specifics on casualties amid increasingly fierce fighting near Artyomovsk (known as Bakhmut in Ukraine). Asked by host Wolf Blitzer about reports of severe Ukrainian losses of men and equipment, he deferred to Ukrainian officials to comment on such details.
“This is war, though, and there is . . . some heavy fighting around Bakhmut, and there’s fighting elsewhere along that front that arches all the way from the Donbass down toward Zaporozhye,”Kirby said. “And certainly, it’s to be expected that there could be casualties in this increased fighting.”
Kirby made his comments amid reports that Ukrainian forces began their long-awaited counteroffensive on Sunday and came under withering Russian firepower as they made multiple failed attempts to breach Moscow’s defensive lines. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Ukrainian forces had suffered far heavier casualties than the typical three-to-one loss ratio typically expected during an offensive.

Ukraine finally launched its "counteroffensive" on the Zaporizhia front. However, the attack in the Velyka Novosilka sector turned into a complete military disaster. Moving in without proper air cover, entire Ukrainian armoured columns were annihilated by Russian minefields, artillery and aviation. Two brigades have now to be refitted. We should consider the past few days as Round 1 of a series of Offensives that will be launched by Ukraine. Next video will focus on the attack in the Orikhiv sector where we witnessed the first Leopard 2s being used in combat.

But something has definitely changed.
"The point is that the front is finally moving," Serhii Kuzan said, adding that several options were still open to Ukrainian commanders.
But Ukraine is also operating under a number of significant restraints, the main one being the lack of fighter jets capable of providing support from the air.
"That's why we move slowly," Mr Kuzan said, "and then move air defence [systems] closer."
Another factor is time. This offensive will probably last no more than five months, after which autumn rain will once again render open ground impassable for heavy armoured vehicles.
What will success look like?
If Ukrainian forces can punch through Russian lines, all the way to the Sea of Azov, then any Russian troops west of that breach will suddenly be much more vulnerable, dependent entirely on supply lines through the Crimean Peninsula.
All that would then remain, Mr Kuzan says, would be to destroy the Kerch Bridge linking Russia with Crimea (briefly disabled by a huge truck bomb last October) and attack ships and planes being used to ferry supplies to the peninsula.
"That would be the end," he says. "But don't expect this to happen soon. It'll take months."

The crews of two Ukrainian BMP-1 infantry combat vehicles have surrendered to Russian troops near the Donbass city of Avdeyevka, news agency TASS reported on Tuesday, citing an unnamed Russian security official.
According to the official, a man from one of the platoons of Ukraine’s 110th separate mechanized bridge had radioed Russian troops, requesting “medical assistance for their wounded soldiers” after higher-ups had “declined” to evacuate his unit.
The Ukrainian officer reportedly asked for a safe passage and said that “the remainder of his units would surrender with all of their weapons, including two BMP-1s.”
Overall, 10 soldiers were taken into custody, including some with serious injuries, the Russian official said. The official added that the captured service members were receiving medical aid and were being vetted for complicity in war crimes.

The uniforms worn by the surrendering soldiers have markings similar to the ones used by Ukrainian forces.
Kiev launched its long-anticipated counteroffensive last week, attacking the Russian forces in multiple areas along the frontline. According to Moscow, Ukrainian troops had failed to breach the Russian defenses and did not achieve their goals. Several German-made Leopard 2 heavy tanks and US-made M2 Bradley armored vehicles were destroyed or abandoned during the fighting.
