New York City is known for its pizza, but some city restaurants may have to rethink how they’re cooking up the pies.

The New York Department of Environmental Protection is proposing new rules that would force pizza joints and other eateries that use coal- and wood-fired ovens to cut their carbon emissions by up to 75%, the New York Post reported.

 

“All New Yorkers deserve to breathe healthy air and wood and coal-fired stoves are among the largest contributors of harmful pollutants in neighbourhoods with poor air quality,” DEP spokesperson Ted Timbers said in a statement.

“This common-sense rule, developed with restaurant and environmental justice groups, requires a professional review of whether installing emission controls is feasible.”

The proposed rule could require restaurants with the specified ovens installed prior to May 2016 to invest in expensive emission-control devices.

A fresco depicting what might be a "distant ancestor" of the Italian pizza has been found on the wall of a house in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy's Culture Ministry says.

  • They say it's likely a flatbread, which was eaten with fruits or spices
  • An Italian agriculture lobby has seized on the discovery to promote pizza as a national treasure
 

Archaeologists presumed the flatbread depicted in the painting may have been eaten with fruits such as pomegranates or dates, or dressed with spices and a type of pesto sauce, the ministry said.

While the food in the image — likely painted in the first century AD — cannot technically be considered a pizza since it lacks classic ingredients such as tomato and mozzarella, what was found in Pompeii "may be a distant relative of the modern dish", according to a statement.

Tomatoes were only introduced to Europe from the Americas a few centuries ago, and some histories have it that the discovery of mozzarella led directly to the invention of pizza in nearby Naples in the 1700s.

The image in the house is instead believed to be a focaccia served on a silver plate and a wine chalice stands next to it.
