A World Health Organization (WHO) official suggested that mass vaccination might be required to combat mosquito-borne illnesses as the infected insects migrate to new countries due to climate change.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead for COVID-19, made the comments at a recent press conference.

“A lot of this is also about other uses of tools that exist,” she said, “in instances where we have interventions like medical interventions, therapeutics or vaccines depending on the pathogen.” 

“We need to be able to prepare for that.”

Sitting next to the WHO’s Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Van Kerkhove further said that countries need to “look at how the changes in climate change and the dynamics of spillover and amplification are changing — and prepare for that.” 

As for Ghebreyesus, he said that COVID-19 is no longer an emergency but its risk is still high. He also whined that many countries are no longer reporting their COVID data to the WHO.

In the past month, he said only 25% of countries and territories have reported COVID-19 deaths to the WHO – a decline from previous reporting percentages.

“And only 11% have reported hospitalizations and ICU admissions,” he said.

“This doesn’t mean other countries don’t have deaths or hospitalizations — it means they’re not reporting them to WHO.”

Ghebreyesus asked for countries to start reporting data to his organization again.

“The virus continues to circulate in all countries, continues to kill, and it continues to change,” he warned.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has partnered with Oxitec for the development of a new strain of genetically-modified mosquitoes that can help reduce the spread of malaria in America. 

In its latest effort to free the world of malaria, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has joined forces with Oxitec, a British company that genetically engineers insects to fight the spread of diseases such as Zika, dengue or chikungunya, as well as to protect crops from plagues.

Oxitec has developed a self-limiting technology that selects against female mosquitoes — the ones who bite and spread disease. When male mosquitoes carrying Oxitec’s self-limiting gene are released, they mate with wild females. The females of their offspring will die before adulthood, while the surviving males can mate again with wild females. The self-limiting gene can survive for up to ten generations, after which no genetically-modified mosquitoes remain.

Some experts have questioned whether the use of genetically modified mosquitoes is feasible on a countrywide scale or is efficient for controlling mosquito populations and the spread of diseases over the long term.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told the March congressional hearing that researchers would have to show that a reduction in the mosquito population led to a decline in disease. “Scalability is really going to be a problem,” he said.” You don’t want to scale up unless you know it works.”

The two longtime directors of the National Institutes of Health and its National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Francis Collins and Anthony Fauci, received 58 royalty payments from companies to license and deploy their products using taxpayer dollars, according to a new release from OpenTheBooks.

On Wednesday, the organization published more than 1500 pages of unredacted records revealing which companies were involved, and which NIH scientists were paid for inventions. The release came after a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) battle with the NIH, reports Just the News.

 

The 56,000 transactions add up to more than $325 million, according to OpenTheBooks, though the individual amounts for each payment and corresponding license are not listed in the records.

Fauci received 37 payments from three companies between 2010-2021: 15 from Santa Cruz Biotechnology, which creates products for medical research including antibodies and made the fifth-most payments in the royalty database; 14 from Ancell Corp., which produces immunology tolls; and eight from Chiron Corp., acquired by Novartis in 2006. -JTN

According to the report, Novartis has received some $17 million in NIH contract payments and $15 million in NIH grants since the acquisition of Chiron. In 2004, Fauci’s NIAID had a contract with the company to develop an avian influenza vaccine.

Collins, meanwhile, who stepped down as NIH director at the end of 2021 before serving as President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 czar, received 21 payments from four companies between 2010 and 2018. Twelve of them came from GeneDX, which received $5 million in federal contract payments – mostly from NIH – since 2008.

Quest Diagnostics’ Specialty Laboratories, a biological testing company, made four payments to Collins. He received four more from Ionis Pharmaceuticals, originally named ISIS, which develops RNA-targeted therapeutics. The last entity to pay Collins was the Progeria Research Foundation – a nonprofit which does research for congenital disorders.

According to OpenTheBooks, obtaining the full names and license numbers for each payment – which the NIH had originally redacted until a court forced them to unredact – was crucial for “scrutinizing these records for potential conflicts of interest or public health risks.”

As Just the News further notes, Fauci has already admitted to receiving more than $45,000 in royalties nearly two decades ago when he was also NIAID director, for an experimental AIDS treatment funded by the NIH.

Fact check: Bill Gates linked to US encephalitis outbreak?

Several US states are taking action against mosquitoes spreading a dangerous virus, as social media users speculate about the background of the EEE outbreak. Once again, many see Bill Gates as the culprit.

 

The health department in the US state of Massachusetts announced the first case of a person infected with Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) this year in mid-August. At the end of August, the neighboring state of New Hampshire reported the first death of an infected person in 2024.

EEE is transmitted by a specific kind of mosquito and, according to the US Centers for Control and Disease Prevention, the disease is fatal in 30% of cases. Many survivors are left with neurological problems. There is currently no available vaccine or medication.

Several US states have therefore now taken measures to reduce the risk of mosquito bites, introducing temporary and localized lockdowns and the use of pesticides to curb the mosquito population.

Claim: On social media, many users are making a connection between the current cases of EEE in the US and the release of genetically modified mosquitoes bred by the company Oxitec, which is sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, among others (here, here, here and here). 

One X user comments: "What's going on with Bill Gates and his mosquito farm? There's an uptick in EEE virus in humans, especially in New England area! Well what I mean is BG has a fkn mosquito farm in Medallin Colombia so yeah did they get out?"

On Facebook, someone writes: "EEE is spread by mosquitoes. Bill Gates is invested in GMO mosquitoes. What're the odds against a sudden pandemic of EEE in the US prior to the upcoming presidential election?"

The mosquito is one of the most dangerous insects in the world. The females — only they bite — can transmit various types of pathogens, including viruses and parasites. Every year over 700,000 people worldwide die from mosquito-borne diseases.

To combat this public health problem, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is supporting the company Oxitec, among others, which is experimenting with genetically modified mosquitoes. In 2020, the biotech company officially received permission to release the laboratory-bred mosquitoes although they had to be geographically limited to Florida. The aim is to reduce the pest population.

"Male mosquitoes will be genetically modified so that they are sterile so that when a female mates with a sterile male, there's no viable offspring. Over time that decreases populations of mosquitoes, and this has been used successfully in Brazil," said Amesh Adalja from the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security.

Such research methods have been studied for some time and other sterile animals, such as irradiated worms in agriculture, have also been used.

A Bill Gates-funded center has bred mosquitoes capable of injecting parasites into unsuspecting humans under the pretext of vaccinating against malaria. But are they truly harmless?

The Gates Foundation-backed Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands has developed a method of malaria vaccination using mosquitoes to deliver live-attenuated Plasmodium falciparum parasites.

The mosquitoes act as ‘flying syringes’ to deliver malaria vaccines – or potentially other substances. But concerns have been raised that recipients could be unaware of the process and be vaccinated without their consent.

 

How It All Began

 

In 2008, Gates pledged $168 million to develop a next-gen malaria vaccine. Jichi Medical University in Japan received funding to genetically modify mosquitoes that can pass a malaria vaccine protein into a host.

 

In 2016, Gates announced a joint $3.7-billion initiative with the British government to combat malaria.

 

By 2018, Gates-funded Oxitec was developing genetically-modified male mosquitoes whose offspring with wild females would die before adulthood.

 

In both cases, scientists raised concerns over the lack of comprehensive studies of environmental, health and ethical risks.

 

 

Once Pandora’s Box is Open, It Cannot be Closed

 

If issues of human consent and ethics are overlooked, insects could be used as ‘vectors’ for other biological agents. 

 

But who guarantees they carry life-saving vaccines and not harmful pathogens? It would be impossible to verify the exact contents of the ‘flying syringes’. 

 

Mosquitoes as Deadly Weapons

 

Insects have previously been studied as potential carriers of viruses and bacteria. 

 

Nazi Germany reportedly developed malaria-carrying mosquitoes as bio-weapons at Dachau. 

 

The Pentagon is said to have conducted similar studies in overseas bio-labs, including in Ukraine, according to assassinated Russian Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov. 

 

Kirillov revealed that US biolabs in Ukraine studied viruses transmitted by mosquitoes, including dengue fever. That was also referenced in a lawsuit filed by Cubans following the 1981 dengue epidemic in the country, where the only area unaffected was around the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay.
