bearded old men sitting on clouds, surrounded by naked children with wings....I once saw an unidentified flying object. I couldn't identify it, it was in the sky, and I assumed it was an object rather than a subject, and certainly not a verb. But no congressional subcommittee was convened to hear my compelling testimony and question my national security implications. I must have picked the wrong moment. Quite recently, such a hearing did indeed take place, and one member of the government or another, gratuitously referred to as "alert launchercommunicated startling facts: some US government secret service (which he could not name) was in possession of parts and pieces of crashed extraterrestrial craft, including samples of "non-human origin". It could be a tin can with a dead rat in it that crawled inside and died (that matches the description), but we'll never know the details because it's all top secret (because , you know, securityeeeenationaaaaal, blah-blah-blah!).

That's not to say that UFOs aren't somehow real. In every population, there are a number of individuals who tend to hallucinate, and a number of them tend to engage in attention-seeking behaviors. Although there is no reason to think that these UFOs are physical, they are very much real, and relatively common, as psychic phenomena. Humans seem to have a tendency to hallucinate when looking up at the sky. There are many paintings depicting bearded old men sitting on clouds, surrounded by naked children with wings. Most scientific hallucinators tend to hallucinate alien spaceships rather than bearded old men sitting on clouds. The hallucination of alien spaceships attracts scientists because it tells them they are not alone! And this is very important. Indeed, the pre-scientific hallucinations are not alone: they have their bearded old man on a cloud and the winged naked boys to keep them company. But scientists consider these comforting illusions to be superstitions, which leaves them alone in the uncomfortably vast and inaccessible universe. To help them out, there are plenty of sci-fi movies filled with alien spaceships that guide their imaginations and trick their wounded psyches into synthesizing them. While individual hallucinations are more typical, group hallucinations are also quite possible. These hallucinations can sometimes lead to full group psychosis, but such occurrences are rare. However, if an entire government program encourages Air Force pilots to confirm radar anomalies and software artifacts by "visualizing– all in the name of national securityaaaaal, harrumph-harrumph! – then, over time, the bureaucracy in question can compile an entire library of these hallucinations, all top secret, of course. This is all pretty dumb, of course, but it ceases to be so when these bureaucratic fantasies are suddenly presented to citizens in a congressional hearing. What could be the rationale for such an approach? Has the American national security establishment finally realized that it is simply not able to deal with the real threats to national security (government corruption, oil depletion, unchecked immigration, infrastructure collapse, drug pandemic, coming financial collapse, etc.) Or would any distraction – any – be welcome, just to distract from the humiliating NATO defeat in Ukraine, the gruesome details of the Biden mafia family, or the fact that the interest payments on the federal debt are about to top $1000 trillion a year and eat up the entire federal budget? It may be a mere coincidence, or a symptom on which to base the diagnosis of a terminal illness, but UFOs were suddenly all the rage in the USSR in 1989. And a few years later, the USSR has disappeared – devoured by extraterrestrials, no doubt! Maybe not, but reasoning by analogy is a powerful analytical technique, and the fact that members of the US Congress are calling on aliens for help may be a telltale sign that the end is near.
