the sea as a nuclear sewer....

TOKYO (Sputnik) - Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has begun dumping wastewater from the plant into the Pacific Ocean, having diluted it with sea water.

The process is being broadcast live by leading Japanese television companies.

TEPCO has collected more than 1 million tonnes of wastewater more than a decade after a massive tsunami triggered a meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in March 2011.

On Tuesday, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said that the release of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean would begin on August 24 if weather and marine conditions allow.

diluted becquerels....

North Korea has called on Japan to immediately stop the release of radioactive wastewater from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, according to a statement shared by the KCNA news agency on Thursday.

The Japanese move “seriously threatens the lives, safety and the future of humanity,” the Foreign Ministry in Pyongyang said.

North Korea further accused Japan of committing an “unforgivable crime against humanity” and demanded that it be held accountable.

The statement comes after Japan announced on Thursday that it had started the release of treated radioactive water from the site of the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster into the Pacific Ocean. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida previously announced that plans include the discharge of about 1.3 million metric tons of wastewater.

Tokyo has stressed that the move has been approved by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The UN’s nuclear watchdog greenlit the Japanese plan last month, stating that independent on-site testing had shown that the tritium concentration in the water was far below the operational limit, and that the impact the move would have on people and the environment would be “negligible.”

Fukushima plant operator Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) also published test results on Thursday claiming that the water contained up to 63 becquerels (a unit of radioactivity) of tritium per liter – far below the WHO drinking water limit of 10,000 becquerels per liter.

Why the West allowed Japan to get away with the Fukushima water dump
As Tokyo’s neighbours cry foul over the potential environmental disaster, its friends across the ocean maintain it’s not a threat

By Timur Fomenko, a political analyst

Tensions between China and Japan are escalating after Tokyo started dumping radioactive water from the Fukushima Nuclear Plant into the ocean.

Beijing, which insists the water is a hazard to the environment, has banned the import of seafood from Japan in response – and although South Korea’s right-wing, pro-Japanese government has sidestepped the issue, it has caused public outrage in the country.

The United States, as well as the pro-Western media, back Tokyo’s decision and insist that the discharge is safe, including through a deliberately misleading narrative that China dumps more “nuclear water” of its own into the ocean than Japan does, ignoring the facts that 1) there has been no nuclear disaster in China and 2) the isotopes involved are different. Despite this, the campaign to downplay China’s concerns as hypocritical and politically motivated has been coordinated.

The Fukushima water-dumping saga nonetheless reveals China’s lasting sensitivities about Japan, and in contrast, displays how the West is willing to defend Tokyo no matter what. How, for one, do you think the media would have reacted if China were responsible for such a disaster? The response to Covid-19 is a helpful template, with Beijing still being accused of a “cover up” and a “lack of transparency” over the origins of the pandemic and demands being bandied around that China “must pay” for its impact on the rest of the world. We can only imagine the concerted political outrage that would follow if Beijing were the one releasing potentially dangerous nuclear wastewater into the ocean. These contrasting reactions show us how, in political terms, Japan enjoys great privileges that China does not. One is able to get away with murder while the other is condemned for jaywalking (even when it’s only allegations).

Chinese citizens have started to import salt from Russia's Primorsky region through the border crossing point Pogranichny after the release of radioactive water from the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant (NPP) in Japan, the press service of Ussuri Customs told Sputnik.

Japan started dumping the treated water that had previously served to cool damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP on August 24.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed the start of the discharge and said experts were on site to ensure the procedure met safety standards despite numerous voices of protest from Japanese citizens and regional neighbors.

Consequently, China slapped a ban on imports of Japanese marine products on Thursday and announced stronger customs controls for other types of Japanese products.

A Chinese newspaper confirmed that the country had seen a surge in demand for salt amid the release of radioactive water, and the country's authorities asked citizens to refrain from mass buying.
