unlucky for some species.....A catastrophic die-off of emperor penguin chicks has been observed in the Antarctic, with up to 10,000 young birds estimated to have been killed. The sea-ice underneath the chicks melted and broke apart before they could develop the waterproof feathers needed to swim in the ocean. The birds most likely drowned or froze to death. The event, in late 2022, occurred in the west of the continent in an area fronting on to the Bellingshausen Sea. It was recorded by satellites. Dr Peter Fretwell, from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), said the wipeout was a harbinger of things to come. More than 90% of emperor penguin colonies are predicted to be all but extinct by the end of the century, as the continent's seasonal sea-ice withers in an ever-warming world. "Emperors depend on sea-ice for their breeding cycle; it's the stable platform they use to bring up their young. But if that ice is not as extensive as it should be or breaks up faster, these birds are in trouble," he told BBC News. "There is hope: we can cut our carbon emissions that are causing the warming. But if we don't we will drive these iconic, beautiful birds to the verge of extinction."

decarbonising......
BY BERNARD KEANE
When the BCA lectures us on climate action aided by Liberal Party strategists it pays to remember it sabotaged action over 20 years.
The Business Council’s “Seize the moment” report — or is it “Realising our full potential”, or “Living on borrowed time” — comes so heavily laden with irony it’s hard to go more than a few pages without stopping and marvelling at the front of these greedy spivs.
For example, the BCA invokes, in support of its usual demands of company tax cuts, polling that it says shows “most Australians think they pay too much tax, and don’t believe the government spends taxpayers’ money effectively. They are also concerned that a high company tax rate in Australia will make local businesses less competitive, resulting in lower economic growth, fewer job opportunities and businesses moving offshore.”
Yep, sounds plausible — Australians are kept awake at night by the idea that big corporations are paying too much tax. Who did the polling for “Seize our full potential”? Why, the Liberal Party’s own campaign strategy powerhouse (and top-flight state capture agency) C|T Group. The BCA’s new head might be a former senior Liberal staffer.

green decline....
The current Dutch Foreign Minister, who could be given the climate action portfolio, has been criticized for his lack of sensitivity to environmental issues.
https://www.lemonde.fr/en/europe/article/2023/08/29/appointment-of-dutchman-wopke-hoekstra-as-european-commissioner-faces-criticism_6113049_143.html
Wopke Hoekstra has an important job interview with Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission. The current Dutch foreign minister and commissioner appointed by the Netherlands to replace Frans Timmermans – the former vice-president of the commission – will discuss his future responsibilities on Tuesday, August 29.
Theoretically, he should inherit the commission's climate action portfolio from Timmermans but not its vice-presidency in charge of the Green Pact, which has gone to Slovakia's Maros Sefcovic unless von der Leyen offers Hoekstra another portfolio, which would lead to a deeper reshuffle of the bloc's executive.
However, this appointment has caused quite a stir in the Netherlands and Europe. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte declined to comment on his government's decision but the appointment of Hoekstra did not make everyone happy, particularly within the Reform Party (D66, liberal left), the most pro-European of the Dutch parties. As the second-largest party in the cabinet, which has recently resigned – legislative elections will be held in November – it had hoped that one of its own would succeed Timmermans.
Weakening the Green Pact"A large number of factors came into play" in the appointment of the foreign minister, said Rutte. One of them, it is said in The Hague, was the strong insistence of the president of the European Commission, who wanted to see a Christian Democrat, a member of the European People's Party (EPP) like herself, manage this critical portfolio. For some months now, the EPP group has been blocking the texts of the Green Pact, which aims to make Europe a carbon-neutral continent by 2050. After attempting to scuttle the law on nature restoration, it is now trying to weaken future legislation on pesticide use, which is still under negotiation.
European Green Deal: More leaders call for 'a regulatory pause'If approved by the European Parliament and the European Council, Hoekstra will represent the European Union at the next Conference of the Parties (COP28) on climate change in Dubai in November. By early 2024, he will have to outline Europe's climate ambitions for 2040. A daunting task for a leader who, in 2021, during a debate, criticized the "dogmas" and "ideological biases" of the leader of the Dutch environmental left.
