First US-made Abrams tanks arrive in Ukraine – Zelensky

Moscow has repeatedly warned that Kiev’s Western-supplied armor will only prolong the conflict

Ukraine has received the first batch of US-made M1 Abrams tanks promised by Washington this winter, President Vladimir Zelensky said on Monday, confirming a New York Times report from earlier in the day.

Writing on Telegram, Zelensky said the Abrams main battle tanks “are already in Ukraine and preparing to reinforce our brigades” while thanking Kiev’s allies for their support.

The delivery was first reported by the New York Times, which cited two US defense officials as saying that the tanks arrived in Ukraine “months ahead of initial estimates.” The shipment, according to the article, could help Kiev in its ‘counteroffensive’ against Russia, which has been going on for more than three months but has failed to gain any ground.

Neither the Times’ sources nor Zelensky would say how many Abrams tanks Ukraine has received thus far. In late August, Politico reported that the US planned to deliver ten of the 31 tanks promised by President Joe Biden in late January by mid-September.

The version that Ukraine will now be able to use in combat is an older M1A1, which lacks some of the more advanced features, but will come with depleted uranium shells that have high armor-piercing capabilities. The controversial munitions, however, are said to pose serious health risks, including cancer and birth defects.

Additionally, Kirill Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, suggested last week that Abrams tanks should only be used in “very specific, well-crafted” breakthrough operations, warning that Russian forces will quickly knock them out if Kiev fails to do so.

Kiev has already deployed Leopard and Challenger tanks to the battlefield provided by Germany and Britain, respectively, and has lost some of them in the fighting.

Russia has repeatedly warned the West that arms shipments to Ukraine will only prolong the conflict, but will not change the outcome. Commenting on the Abrams deliveries, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov noted earlier this year that Western countries are drastically overestimating the impact of the tanks on the conflict, adding that the weapons will “burn like all the rest of them.”

US-supplied Abrams tanks should only be deployed by Kiev in specific breakthrough operations, or they will be quickly destroyed by Russian forces, Kirill Budanov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ukrainian military, has said.

Ukraine is “looking forward” to receiving the 31 Abrams M1 main battle tanks that Washington promised to provide in January, Budanov said in an interview with the War Zone website on Friday.

During their meeting at the White House on Thursday, US President Joe Biden told his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky that the first Abrams M1s will be arriving in Ukraine “next week.”

However, the spy chief warned that if the American armor is deployed “on the front line and just in a combined arms fight, they will not live very long on the battlefield” with Russia.

In order to truly benefit from the tanks, Kiev should only engage them in “very specific, well-crafted” breakthrough operations, he said.

The wide use of artillery and mines by both Russian and Ukrainian forces has “reduced the possibility of using armored equipment in practically all of the main directions to the minimum,” Budanov explained.

If we just deploy some battalion tank group into the battlefield somewhere, just as soon as it gets under the range of artillery it will get hit,” he said.

According to the spy chief, this is the reason, why “currently, all main instances of fighting are done on foot without using any materiel.”

Budanov also spoke about the long-range ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) missiles, which were absent from the latest military aid package announced by Biden, despite Kiev requesting the hardware from Washington for months.

The spy chief said the missiles are needed by the Ukrainian forces to target Russian airfields, command posts and ammunition depots in what he called “occupied areas of Ukraine,” including Crimea.

He said he did not know if Kiev would eventually get ATACMS or not, in the absence of an official announcement by Washington. “There are still different ways how this situation can turn out,”Budanov stressed.

Expensive American M1 Abrams tanks delivered to Ukraine are increasingly falling prey to Russian drones that cost only a fraction as much, the New York Times reported on Saturday. Even “one of the most powerful symbols of American military might” is not invulnerable to such attacks, it said.

At least five US-supplied tanks out of the 31 provided by Washington have already been destroyed by Russia, the American media outlet said, adding that three others had been “moderately damaged.”

In most cases, the tanks have been destroyed by first-person-view (FPV) kamikaze drones, also known as loitering munitions. Such drones are capable of actively maneuvering before hitting their target.

In at least one instance, though, an Abrams tank was taken out in a duel against a Russian T-72B3 main battle tank. The Russian military has published upwards of a dozen clips, mostly taken from drones, showing the destruction of US-supplied equipment.

According to the NYT, the tanks turned out to be “more easily taken out by exploding drones than some officials and experts had initially assumed.” The media outlet cited an Austrian historian and military expert, Colonel Markus Reisner, who described such a situation as “unbelievable.”The paper also described the Russian UAVs as “highly-accurate, low-cost tank killers.”

The drones’ accuracy exceeds 90%, the NYT said, adding that they are also capable of hitting heavy armor in its weakest spots. The UAVs “can cost as little as $500,” the paper reported, are capable of “taking out a $10 million Abrams tank.” The paper also admitted that there was no “easy, or single” way to defend a tank against a drone attack.

US-made Abrams tanks made their long-expected appearance on the front line in late February amid the Ukrainian effort to halt advancing Russian troops after the capture of the Donbass town of Avdeevka. A batch of 31 M1 Abrams tanks was pledged to Kiev early last year, ahead of the ultimately disastrous Ukrainian counteroffensive. The delivery was made in full only by mid-October, when the ill-fated push had already largely been exhausted.
