Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday addressed a suggestion that he be “put down” made by US President Joe Biden, suggesting that the octogenarian American politician still has a lot to learn.
“You live, you learn. One must learn, and then there won’t be a desire to ‘put down’ anyone, since that leads to problems. One needs to learn to respect others and seek compromise,” Putin said in Beijing, where he is attending the international Belt and Road Forum.
The Russian leader was responding to a reporter who had asked for a comment on Biden’s statements, voiced in a ‘60 Minutes’ interview broadcast on Sunday by the US network CBS.
“Imagine what happens if we, in fact, unite all of Europe and Putin is finally put down where he cannot cause the kind of trouble he’s been causing,” Biden told interviewer Scott Pelley at one point, arguing that the US has “enormous opportunities to make it a better world.”
Putin’s response was more diplomatic than the reaction of his predecessor Dmitry Medvedev, who currently chairs the Russian security council. Commenting on Biden’s words on Monday, Medvedev thanked the US president for clarifying his mission, but noted that “none of this is going to happen,” because Biden has “already forgotten what he said.”
“Dementia is a useful thing,” Medvedev added.
Biden, 81, is the oldest US president to be sworn in. He has been dogged by persistent rumors about his deteriorating physical and mental health, driven by a history of mis-speaking in public.
In a CBS poll last month, only 26% of respondents said he was physically and cognitively fit for the job, and only 34% believed he would make it to the end of his second term, if re-elected in 2024.
At a campaign event in Pennsylvania in early September, Biden argued that his advanced years were actually an asset, because “the only thing that comes with age is a little bit of wisdom.”
The suspect in two mass shootings in Maine that killed nearly 20 people late Wednesday is a member of the Army Reserve who enlisted more than 20 years ago, military officials said Thursday.
Maine authorities said at a news conference Thursday that 18 people were killed at two locations in Lewiston, the state’s second-largest city. More than a dozen others were injured, they said.
Federal and Maine authorities are still searching for the suspected shooter identified as Robert Card, who enlisted in the Army Reserve in December 2002 and was a petroleum supply specialist who had achieved the rank of sergeant first class, a spokesperson for the service said. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 304th Infantry Regiment at a training facility in Saco, Maine.
A petroleum supply specialist supervises and manages the reception, storage and shipping of petroleum-based products. Soldiers in the role also put fuel in vehicles and aircraft and make certain it is being transported and handled safely, according to the Army.
The Army said Card, 40, had no combat deployments and received some decorations, including the Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.
“He should be considered armed and dangerous. We believe he is someone who should not be approached,” said Col. William Ross of the Maine State Police.
Ross said Card has been charged with several counts of murder, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. He added seven people died at the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley and eight people were killed at Schemengees Bar and Grille. Three victims died later at the hospital, the Maine State Police said Thursday.
Card was also a certified firearms instructor and had been dealing with mental health issues, according to The Associated Press. Card spent a couple of weeks in a mental health facility in the summer and said he’d been hearing voices telling him to carry out a shooting at the Saco base, the AP reported.
“The Army did not train [Robert] Card as a firearms instructor, nor did he serve in that capacity for the Army,” an Army spokesperson said. “We take matters such as this very seriously, and our primary concern is ensuring that all legal and appropriate actions are taken in accordance with our commitment to upholding the highest standards of conduct among our soldiers and civilian personnel.”

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been hired by the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), a Washington, DC think tank known to be bankrolled by the US government, NATO, and Western military contractors.
Johnson will be a member of CEPA’s International Leadership Council, described as “a high-level advisory group,” the think tank announced this week.
According to CEPA’s head, Alina Polyakova, Johnson’s “commitment to Ukraine’s victory” makes him an “invaluable addition to this distinguished group of thought leaders,” at what she described as a “pivotal moment for the transatlantic alliance.”
Johnson himself issued a statement about the move, calling the “transatlantic bond” more important than ever, “not just for the freedom and independence of Ukraine but for freedom across the world.”
CEPA describes itself as a “nonprofit, nonpartisan, public policy institution” that is “focused on strengthening the transatlantic alliance.” Among its fellows and experts are former Economist editor and anti-RT crusader Edward Lucas; former US envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker; and former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves.
The think tank’s own website lists among its major supporters military-industrial complex companies such as BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin and Leonardo, as well as NATO, the US State Department, and the US European Command.
Johnson has been one of the loudest champions of Kiev in the West, infamously torpedoing the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in April 2022. According to Ukrainian media, Johnson made a surprise visit to Kiev and informed the government that it would lose all support from the West if it made peace with Moscow.
too little wisdom....
