The Biden administration has not made clear exactly what it wants to achieve by providing billions of dollars in support to Ukraine, newly elected US House Speaker Mike Johnson has said, indicating that Republicans may want to handle that separately from financial help to Israel.
In an interview with Fox News released on Thursday, Johnson, a Louisiana Republican who is considered a Trump ally and a skeptic of Ukraine aid, said the American people “are demanding some real accountability” on the matter.
The speaker stressed that while Republicans are not opposed to helping Kiev in the conflict with Moscow, “we want to know what the object is there, what is the end game in Ukraine.”
“The White House has not provided that,” he explained, adding that he has made this position clear to top administration officials.
Johnson also said the consensus among House Republicans is that they “need to bifurcate” aid to Ukraine and Israel, which has been locked in a bloody conflict with the Palestinian armed group Hamas for several weeks now.
The speaker’s remarks came after the Biden administration asked Congress last Friday to approve a massive new $106 billion assistance package, with more than $60 billion of that sum earmarked for Kiev. The remainder is intended to address the security needs of Israel and Taiwan, as well as the turbulent situation on the southern US border.
However, a group of US Republican senators introduced a bill on Thursday seeking to decouple funding for Israel from that for Ukraine. One of its sponsors, Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah), stated it “is unreasonable for the administration to exploit an aid package for Israel to siphon off billions of taxpayer dollars in yet another blank check for Ukraine.”
The renewed pushback by Republicans opposed to Biden’s Ukraine strategy – who famously vowed to support the country “for as long as it takes” – comes as National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan warned last week that the funding Congress had approved “has nearly run out.”
Meanwhile, CNN reported earlier this month, citing US officials, that the Pentagon has been growing increasingly concerned over depleting ammunition stockpiles needed to simultaneously support both Israel and Ukraine. The latter country has been engaged in a faltering counteroffensive against Russian defenses for several months now, struggling to gain any significant ground while suffering heavy casualties, according to Moscow.

CATHOLIC BIDEN PRAISES HIMSELF FOR BOMBING PEOPLE:
US President Joe Biden has offered legal justification for American airstrikes on eastern Syria this week, saying the operations were a rightful response to a string of drone and rocket attacks on US forces in the region.
In a letter to US lawmakers published on Friday, the White House said the air operations were in line with presidential war powers, and followed repeated “attacks against United States personnel and facilities in Iraq and Syria” this month.
“At my direction, on the night of October 26, 2023, United States forces conducted targeted strikes against facilities in eastern Syria,” Biden said, adding that the sorties hit sites used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and “affiliated groups.”
The strikes “were intended to establish deterrence and were conducted in a manner to limit the risk of escalation and avoid civilian casualties,” the letter continued, describing them as “necessary and proportionate.”
The Pentagon first announced the military action on Thursday night, saying the mission was in “self-defense” and aimed “solely to protect and defend US personnel in Iraq and Syria.” Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder later said US warplanes hit weapons and ammunition caches near the border town of al-Bukamal, claiming “both facilities were destroyed.”
While National Security Council spokesman John Kirby noted that officials were still reviewing the operation, he warned that US forces would “not hesitate to take further actions in our own self-defense.”
American bases in the two countries have come under fire no less than 16 times since October 17, according to US Central Command. Several soldiers have been injured in that time, in addition to a civilian contractor who died of a heart attack during one barrage.
Up to 1,000 US troops are currently deployed in Syria, occupying key oil fields and Euphrates River crossings with the support of a Kurdish-led militia. The government in Damascus has repeatedly protested that their presence violates international law.

Hungary has blocked a €50 billion ($52.8 billion) EU aid package for Ukraine because “it is obvious” that Kiev will not defeat Moscow, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Friday. Orban has repeatedly called for a ceasefire and peace talks in Ukraine.
Speaking on the sidelines of a summit in Brussels, Orban told Hungary’s Kossuth Radio that the multibillion euro proposal “had not been worked out properly, and was not suitable to be a basis for serious negotiations, so we rejected it.”
Brussels’ entire strategy of pumping military and economic aid into Kiev while sanctioning the Russian economy has failed to swing the conflict in Ukraine’s favor, he continued.
“Today, everybody knows but they do not dare to say it out loud, that this strategy has failed. It is obvious that this will not work … the Ukrainians will not win on the frontline," he said.
The draft plan, known as the Ukraine Facility, would see Kiev receive €33 billion in low-interest loans and €17 billion in non-repayable grants as part of a wider package that would also allocate €15 billion to handle migration-related issues As the plan involves modifying the EU’s budget, it must be approved by all 27 member states. Slovakia has also vetoed the draft, with Prime Minister Robert Fico citing concerns over corruption in Ukraine.
As well as blocking the €50 billion loans and grants package, Hungary has maintained a veto on a €500 million top-up to the European Peace Facility (EPF), a €5.6 billion ($6.08 billion) fund that the bloc uses to finance foreign militaries and reimburse its own members who send arms to foreign conflicts.
The EU has given Ukraine a total of €83 billion in military, economic, and humanitarian aid since February 2022, the European Commission said earlier this week.
In an interview with German tabloid Bild during the summer, Orban stated that the idea of a Ukrainian victory on the battlefield is “impossible” and that, without an immediate ceasefire, Ukraine will “lose a huge amount of wealth and many lives, and unimaginable destruction will occur.”
According to the most recent Russian figures, Ukraine lost more than 90,000 men in its failed summer counteroffensive. With its combat power weakened, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu claimed on Tuesday that the Ukrainian military was “panicking,” while Mikhail Podoliak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, described the offensive as “six to nine months behind schedule.”
