A new war in Europe is no longer unthinkable and German society must adapt to this reality, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has claimed as he called for increased military spending.

In an interview with Germany’s ZDF broadcaster on Sunday, Pistorius insisted that Germans “must again get used to the thought that the danger of a war in Europe could pose a threat.” Discussing Berlin’s defense capabilities, the minister called on his compatriots to “become war-capable.”

The official cited the Ukraine conflict as well as hostilities between Israel and Hamas as proof that fighting could also erupt elsewhere.

Pistorius brushed off criticism that Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government has been too slow to build up the German armed forces, claiming that they are working as rapidly as possible to make up for 30 years of neglect and underfunding. The minister promised that the Bundeswehr would be unrecognizable in three or four years’ time, and suggested that the German military is already among the strongest in NATO and Europe.

Commenting on the situation in the Middle East, Pistorius argued that the current conflict was about “Israel’s right to self-defense and right to exist,” with which Germany “unconditionally” agrees. According to the minister, it is Berlin’s “duty to stand on the side of Israel” while trying to prevent further escalation.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times published on Sunday, Fiona Hill, the Russia guru in former US President Donald Trump’s administration, also claimed that the Ukraine and Gaza conflicts “could be global-system-shifting wars, something like World War I and World War II, which reflected and produced major changes in the international order.”

“In a sense, the Hamas attack on Israel was a kind of Pearl Harbor moment. It opened a second front,” she insisted.

Last week, Israeli Energy Minister Israel Katz, a key ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told the German tabloid Bild that his country’s campaign in Gaza is part of “World War III against radical Islam.”

The politician pointed the finger at Israel’s arch enemy, Iran, as the main instigator of the hostilities.

Tehran has denied direct involvement with the October 7 Hamas raid, while condemning the Israeli actions that have followed.

German police have arrested Daniel Halemba, a newly elected Bavarian lawmaker with the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The politician was caught in the Stuttgart area early Monday, prosecutors said.

The 22-year-old MP, the youngest politician ever elected to the Bavarian parliament, is suspected of incitement and use of banned symbols of “unconstitutional organizations,” namely, the Nazi swastika. The investigation into Halemba is linked to the Teutonia Prague student fraternity, which was raided by the authorities in Wurzburg, Bavaria last month.

The group is suspected of using Nazi-associated memorabilia and symbols, while neighbors repeatedly complained that fraternity members were shouting “Sieg Heil” during their assemblies. During the raid, forbidden symbols were recovered from the fraternity’s compound, according to the authorities.

Apart from Halemba, who has openly admitted to being a member of the fraternity and was at the compound during the raid, German law enforcement has identified four other suspects. All of them are accused of incitement and possession of Nazi memorabilia.

The MP, however, has denied the allegations, telling the Suddeutsche Zeitung after the raid that no“incriminating material” had been found. Katrin Ebner-Steiner, the AfD’s parliamentary leader in Bavaria, condemned the MP’s arrest, calling it “an indictment” of democracy.

Halemba’s lawyer, Dubravko Mandic, dismissed the allegations as well, saying there is “no truth” to them, while signaling that the arrest of his client will be challenged. “He is an elected member of parliament and, in my opinion, he has a claim against the government and the ministry of justice that they no longer execute the arrest warrant,” Mandic told the German Press Agency.

Halemba’s arrest comes as he was set to begin his tenure in the Bavarian parliament. The politician is among 32 MPs elected in the Bavarian state elections earlier this month from the AfD, making it the largest opposition party in the state.

Too many people in Germany are anti-Semitic and this must change, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has told Bild in response to the tabloid’s manifesto on what Berlin needs to do about millions of Muslim immigrants.

“The extent of anti-Semitism is frightening,” said the head of the Greens and the federal minister for the economy. “We have a historical responsibility and anti-Semitism, no matter what form it takes, must have no place in Germany.”

The German constitution must apply “with all its rights and obligations,” Habeck added, responding to the publication of “Germany, we have a problem,” a 50-point manifesto authored by Bild to address the rise in anti-Semitism triggered by the latest Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In the weeks following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, German authorities have recorded over 1,100 incidents ranging from incitement to hatred to bodily harm and property damage, including an attempted firebombing of a synagogue in Berlin. 

Meanwhile, several mass pro-Palestinian demonstrations have resulted in clashes with police. German officials have gone as far as proposing a law that would strip “anti-Semites” of citizenship and allow the deportation of those deemed Hamas sympathizers.

“I sometimes don’t recognize this country,” Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews, told Bild. “Hate of Jews and hostility to Israel is flaring up again in Germany: openly on the streets, in lecture halls and theaters; whether Islamist, right-wing extremist, left-wing radical or woke. Behind closed doors, anti-Semitism has penetrated into the middle of society.”

Schuster also criticized Germany for having “no clear stance against the relativization of Hamas terror.”

According to Bild’s manifesto, published on Sunday, there has been “a new dimension of hatred in our country – against our values, democracy, and against Germany” since the Hamas attack on Israel. 

The manifesto itself does not mention Islam or Muslims. It does, however, criticize “many people who oppose our way of life,” believe “radical preachers,” hate “infidels” and “want to forbid women from wearing skirts or trousers.”

“They exploit tolerance because they want a different society,” the manifesto says, noting that Germany has taken in over three million migrants since 2015, but never told them “we do not want to change our way of life just because we have guests.”

Germany considers backing Israel part of its atonement for the Holocaust perpetrated by the 1933-45 Nazi regime of Adolf Hitler. An estimated 120,000 Jews lived in the country as of 2021.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has fired a ministerial aide for calling for a “permanent” ceasefire in Gaza. London has stopped short of urging for an end to the war, proposing only limited “pauses” to allow aid to reach the Palestinian enclave.

Conservative MP Paul Bristow was removed from his position as parliamentary private secretary (PPS) at the Department for Science on Monday, days after he penned a letter to Sunak pressing for a long-term truce between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza.

“Paul Bristow has been asked to leave his post in government following comments that were not consistent with the principles of collective responsibility,” a spokesperson for 10 Downing Street said, referring to a rule requiring government officials to publicly support all cabinet policy decisions.

The Russian military has been so successful in obliterating Western armored vehicles, including tanks, that officials in the US and Europe have even begun to question their effectiveness, it was reported back in September, as Kiev’s counteroffensive proved to be a complete failure despite the flow of aid from NATO countries.

Ukraine’s Armed Forces have been facing a streak of Leopard 2 tank losses, a US media report has revealed.

Within slightly over a week, at least a dozen of Ukraine’s Leopard 2A4s, Leopard 2A6s, and Stridsvagn 122s (Strv 122) have been “written off,” as per the outlet, which clarified that the latter are Swedish versions of the Leopard 2A5. Furthermore, six Leopard 2s were lost by Ukraine earlier. Thus, a quarter of the German tanks donated to the Kiev regime have been destroyed by Russia’s military in the course of its special ops over the abovementioned period, the author claims.

The Leopard 2 tanks supplied to Ukraine by Western countries have proven to be ineffective in combat operations due to a number of design features, according to Yan Gagin, adviser to the head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). The Leopard 2 does not have sufficient maneuverability and hull strength, Gaginpointed out, and furthermore, these tanks weigh a lot, and their off-road capability is mediocre.
