ukraine continues to suffer defeat after defeat at the hands of the russian military.....

As Russia's Armed Forces continue to dominate the battlefields of the Ukrainian conflict, Kiev's sponsors in the US have become increasingly worried about how setbacks suffered by their proxy may affect US politics.

The US leadership may resort to some drastic measures to avert Russia’s triumph, argued former CIA analyst Ray McGovern.

During his recent interview on Judge Andrew Napolitano’s podcast Judging Freedom, McGovern postulated that the upcoming presidential election in the United States prompts the Biden administration to desperately search for a way to make it look like they are not losing in the Ukrainian conflict.

“There is going to be some idiot in the Pentagon or in the White House who is going to say: ‘Look, Mr. President, the only way we can show Russia that we mean business is to use one of these mini-nukes. They are only about a tenth of the size of what we did in Hiroshima. So let’s do that and then they’ll stop, and then we won’t absolutely lose the election, and then we could deal with the rest of it,” McGovern mused.

Kiev claims massive overnight air attack launched by Russia
A Ukrainian military spokesman said that an unprecedented number of weapons was used in the reported barrage

The Ukrainian Air Force, which is responsible for the nation's air defenses, said it faced a massive Russian barrage on Thursday night and Friday morning. Officials throughout the country have reported damage at multiple sites.

The alleged air raid, which has yet to be confirmed by the Russian military, reportedly involved dozens of drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ignat told the media “we have never seen so many targets on our monitors simultaneously.”

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a metro station was damaged, as well as warehouses in two separate districts of the Ukrainian capital. His office said a business center was also set on fire.

Sergey Lisak, who heads the Dnepropetrovsk Region, reported that a shopping mall was hit in the city of Dnepr, the region’s capital. Oleg Sinegub, his counterpart from Kharkov Region, said “civilian infrastructure” was damaged, including warehouses and a medical facility.

Prime Minister Denis Shmygal reported there had been issues with the power supply in the city of Kharkov – which city Mayor Igor Terekhov confirmed – and damage in Lviv, Sumy, Odessa, and Zaporozhye Regions. The minister claimed that “most of the air targets were intercepted” by Ukrainian forces.

Ignat claimed on national television that Russia used “everything” in its arsenal from kamikaze drones to hypersonic air-launched Kinzhal missiles.

Moscow previously stated that Kiev tends to exaggerate the number of Kinzhal missiles used by Russia in the conflict in order to claim that it intercepted those projectiles.

The Ukrainian official estimated that Russia used 18 Tu-95 strategic bombers to fire air-launched missiles overnight.

Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s top general, later said that the military had detected 158 separate launches and claimed that 27 drones and 87 cruise missiles were stopped. He put the number of Kinzhal launches at five.

Earlier in the week, Kiev celebrated what it hailed as a major success in the conflict: a Russian warship in the Crimean port city of Feodosia was damaged by air-launched cruise missiles.

faltering......

The military and economic balance in war has shifted strongly against Ukraine, and it is very hard to see how this tendency can now be reversed. There is still time for Ukraine to win a qualified victory against Russia; but only if the United States commits itself strongly to a compromise peace.

Russia’s population is at least four times that of Ukraine, and its GDP is 14 times greater. Western attempts to cripple Russia through economic sanctions have failed. The Russian economy grew by around three percent in 2023, as a result of increased energy exports to non-Western countries and a massive and successful effort to invest in military industrial production. Ukraine is making desperate attempts to boost its own military production, but from a far lower industrial base coupled with an acute shortage of skilled labor.

The Biden administration is therefore correct to warn that without continued and massive U.S. military aid to Ukraine, Russia will quickly win. It is however equally clear that U.S. aid — still less at the levels sustained to date — cannot be guaranteed even in the medium term. Partly due to the new U.S. commitment to Israel created by the Gaza war and the threat of it spreading, the United States is also failing adequately to replenish Ukraine’s dwindling stocks of air-defense missiles, which are crucially important both on the battlefield and in the protection of Ukrainian infrastructure and industry. Both the United States and Europe are failing to meet their targets for increased production of artillery shells, which Russia is firing at some three to five times the Ukrainian rate.

And even if the West could vastly increase its military production (highly doubtful given the pressure on Western budgets, supply chain problems, and skilled labor shortages), we cannot provide Ukraine with more soldiers. Ukrainian manpower shortages are becoming increasingly acute, and are leading to increasingly draconian conscription measures and bitter disputes within the Ukrainian government over how to enforce conscription, which is faltering in the face of growing public resistance.
