German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of grossly misrepresenting the situation in Ukraine, saying the Kremlin leader told an “absurd story” about the conflict’s origin during his sit-down with Tucker Carlson.

Speaking during a visit to Washington, DC on Friday, Scholz weighed in on Putin’s recent interview with the former Fox host, arguing it only “mocks what real actions have been done by Russia in Ukraine” and presented a “completely absurd story about the cause of this war.”

“There is a very clear cause, that is the desire of the president of Russia to annex part of Ukraine. And all the stories that are told about it do not change the fact that that is exactly the purpose of his imperialist efforts,” the chancellor added.

Scholz went on to say that the fighting could “end at any time,” but not “by Ukraine capitulating,” and that “conditions for a peaceful solution” must be created as soon as possible.

The conversation published on Thursday was the first sit-down between a US media personality and the Russian leader since Moscow launched its military operation in the neighboring state in February. Putin’s interview with Carlson went on for more than two hours and covered a wide range of topics, with a focus on the ongoing hostilities.

Putin offered a lengthy review of the centuries of shared history between Russia and Ukraine, arguing that Western powers had used Ukraine to antagonize Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union. He pointed to NATO’s expansion eastward, the US-led bloc’s accession talks with Ukraine, as well as Western support for Kiev’s 2014 Euromaidan coup, which he deemed a “colossal mistake.”

The Russian leader said that Moscow would never have become involved were it not for the “bloody developments of Maidan.” The crisis only intensified after Kiev sent troops to quell a separatist movement launched by the Russian-speaking people of Donbass who, along with people in Crimea, had opposed the coup.

“They launched a large-scale military operation, then another one… All this against the background of military development of this territory and the opening of NATO’s doors. How could we not express concern over what was happening?” Putin continued.

Asked how the conflict might be brought to an end, Putin said fighting would quickly cease if Washington and its allies halted arms shipments to Ukrainian forces, adding that Moscow is ready for a dialogue toward a peaceful settlement.

«The real damage that threatens civilization does not come from the East but from the far West". This is, in summary, the thesis put forward not only by me in The West River (Laterza 2023), but also and above all by Emmanuel Todd in The defeat of the West (Gallimard 2024), in a much more authoritative and radical way.

I would, however, like to point out that the opening sentence of these few notes is quoted in an essay by Luciano Canfora, The schiavitù of the capital (il Mulino, 2017), as lucid as ever: it belongs to Isaac Kadmi-Cohen (1892-1954) (photo), who underlines how, already in the aftermath of the First World War, had been launched, on the part of the United United in particular, a project “as intelligent as it is disgusting […] to ruin Europe and colonize it».

All this comes back in a different and even more convincing way in the latest book by the Franco-Lebanese Christian Amin Maalouf, The Labyrinth of the Lost. The West and its adversaries (Grasset 2023), where the four enemies of what he continues to call "the West" are, in chronological order, Japan of the Meji era, the Soviet Union, China of today today and finally the United States. We can deduce from this that Maalouf continues to use the term "West" as Spengler used it (thus as a synonym for Europe), but that he converges with Kadmi-Cohen's opinion according to which the real enemy of our civilization is the “far West”, that is, precisely the United States and its immediate support zone, the so-called “anglosphere”.

On the other hand, the real enemy of Europe has historically been, in a gradual but progressive manner, since the beginning of the modern era, Europe itself when it proposed itself as the "modern West" by breaking the balance of a previous world characterized by civilizations which were not totally open to each other and by initiating the world economy, therefore globalization, while choosing more and more irrevocably individualism, the will to power and the process of secularization as the main driving forces.

In view of all this, between the 16th and 20th centuries, Europe, claiming to bring to the rest of the world its progress, its religious faith, its civilization and with it peace, in fact organized a colossal system of enslavement of other continents and the progressive destruction of their respective civilizations.

Maalouf chooses as an example, among thousands, an episode (reported in his book, pp. 199-201) to clarify what the reality of things was, obscured by the Europeans under the cover of peaceful commercial relations but already, for example, by the Chinese at the end of the XNUMXth century, revealed and denounced in its brutal reality.

  

In September 1793, the “son of heaven” Qianlung of the Manchu Qing dynasty celebrated his 82nd birthday. King George III of England saw fit to send him an ambassador to offer him his best wishes for a long life; on this occasion, the diplomat must propose to the Chinese emperor ever closer commercial collaboration, which implies further opening his ports to British ships. Lord George Macartney, who already had some experience of Asia, at least of India, was chosen to carry out this mission.

As a representative of the greatest naval power in the world, Macartney believes that a certain deferential nonchalance is enough to be received at the court of Peking: he brings rich gifts, and he believes that this is enough to believe that the king's representative of England can be exempted from the rite of the nine prostrations before the throne of the Son of Heaven.

But Qianlung had a different opinion. Not only does he treat him with disdain by forcing him to pay him the homage due to him, but he even addresses King George with a long and severe written warning: "Our celestial Empire has within its borders all kinds of goods in abundance and lacks nothing. He therefore does not need to import from outside the things that the barbarians produce. Two cultures, two mental systems face each other. On the one hand, tradition, customs, the respect granted and demanded; on the other, the arrogance of material power, of the power that arises from the consciousness of superiority, whose current pillars are those indicated by Carlo Maria Cipolla, the mobile sails that allow ocean navigation and the powerful mouths of fire capable to make interlocutors certainly endowed with an equal and perhaps even superior culture bend. To the culture of Being, the West opposed neither Jesus Christ, nor Plato, nor Aristotle, but the culture of Having: that is to say of possessing, of imposing by force one's vaunted superiority, to make its own profit grow.

  

The fruits of this clash of cultures appeared in China less than a century later, when the trade balance shifted towards the Chinese, who produced quantity and quality of valuable goods in high demand in the West. The British then suggested to the Chinese that they export what, thanks to their Indian empire, they had in abundance: opium, which the government of the Celestial Empire disdainfully rejected on the grounds that it would cause immense moral, economic and physical damage. to his people. For today's China, this episode marked the fatal outcome of a Western conspiracy aimed at destroying China through drugs and "gunboat diplomacy". For too long, the West, which advocates peace, freedom, progress, fraternity between peoples, has sowed this wind in the world; our children, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of generations of educated and civilized democratic vultures, will now reap the storm that is brewing.
