When he was appointed this month, Ukraine's new head of the armed forces, Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi, said he would "rather retreat than sacrifice lives", and that is what he has finally done with this eastern city.

Despite Russians suffering enormous losses*, four months of relentless attacks have left Ukrainian troops there outnumbered, outgunned, and with dwindling ammunition.

It is Moscow's biggest victory since Ukraine's failed counter-offensive last year.

Avdiivka was briefly occupied by Russia in 2014 before being retaken by Ukraine.

So, what does Avdiivka's fall mean for the wider conflict?

Size matters more than ever

With this now being a war of attrition, the difference in Ukraine and Russia's size is becoming more apparent. Russia's population of 144 million is more than four times larger than Ukraine's.

Despite losing thousands of soldiers* in the process, Moscow has made its size count by replenishing them almost immediately.

Ukrainian forces have suffered losses too, though not to the same extent.

As with other Ukrainian settlements on the front line, Russia has seized an almost totally destroyed city.

Sergei Shoigu reported to Vladimir Putin, the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, on the complete taking of Avdeyevka under control by the troops of the Battlegroup Tsentr under the command of Colonel-General Mordvichev, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

As a result of the capture of Avdeyevka from Ukrainian nationalists, an area of 31.75 square kilometers has been liberated, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported.

Over the past 24 hours, Ukraine lost over 1,500 servicemen in the battles for Avdeyevka, the ministry added.

The Battlegroup Tsentr forces continue offensive operations to further liberate the Donetsk People’s Republic from the Ukrainian nationalists, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

The liberation of Avdeyevka has made it possible to move the front line away from Donetsk and significantly secure it from terrorist attacks by the Kiev regime.

Measures are currently being taken to finally clear Avdeyevka of militants and block Ukrainian units, the ministry stated.

Few scattered formations of Ukrainian militants managed to leave Avdeyevka in a hurry, abandoning weapons and equipment.

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the Russian military on its success in Avdeyevka, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"Putin in the Kremlin listened to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu's report on the liberation of Avdeyevka. The president congratulated our military and fighters on such an important victory, on such a success," Peskov said.

Putin, in a telegram to Tsentr Battlegroup commander Colonel-General Mordvichev, expressed his gratitude for the bravery of the troops he led in the liberation of Avdeyevka, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

US President Joe Biden has identified the alleged culprits behind this week’s loss of a Ukrainian stronghold to Russian forces: the Republican lawmakers who have refused to approve his request for $60 billion in additional aid to Kiev.

“This morning, Ukraine’s military was forced to withdraw from Avdeevka after Ukrainian soldiers had to ration ammunition due to dwindling supplies as a result of congressional inaction, resulting in Russia’s first notable gains in months,” Biden said on Saturday in a statement. The statement recounted a call that Biden placed to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky “to underscore the United States’ commitment to continue supporting Ukraine ahead of the two year anniversary of Russia’s brutal invasion.”

However, Biden admitted to reporters on Friday that there was no way for his administration to provide additional ammunition to Ukraine without congressional approval for his latest aid request. He also blasted US House lawmakers for going on vacation without passing a bipartisan Senate bill that includes a combined $95 billion in funding for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
