The Biden administration cannot allow Ukraine to collapse prior to November’s Presidential election. If escalation was needed to stave off defeat, the red line on missile strikes on Russia could be quickly erased.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was criminal, and it unleashed a brutal war of attrition like 1914-1918 on a smaller scale. Yet, reference to 1914 should allow us to grasp how things can escalate very badly when you have two military alliances peering over the barrel of a gun at each other.

As Britain goes to the polls, we should be demanding of Sunak and Starmer a de-escalation of our military involvement in Ukraine, where we do not just have missiles, but in all probability special forces. Kiev will be allowed to use the 24 F-16 fighter jets that it is slated to receive from the Netherlands however it sees fit, Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren has told Politico.

The approach contrasts with that of Belgium, a partner in the so-called ‘F-16 coalition’, which has offered 30 fighter jets to Ukraine. Its Prime Minister Alexander De Croo maintains that any weapons supplied by his nation can only be used inside the territory claimed by Kiev as Ukrainian, including the aircraft.

“There is not” a Belgian-style restriction, Ollongren told the news outlet on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, as quoted on Monday.

“We are applying the same principle that we have applied to every other delivery of capabilities, which is: once we hand it over to Ukraine, it’s theirs to use,” she explained. The Dutch government only requires its arms to be used in compliance with international law, the minister said.

Western nations have offered Ukrainian pilots training courses on how to operate the US-designed fighter jets. The long-promised transfer of the aircraft to Kiev’s control may start within months, according to statements by coalition members. The group also includes Denmark and Norway.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said last week that Kiev could potentially use the 19 F-16s pledged by his government to weaken Moscow’s forces “by taking out military facilities on Russian territory.”

Ukrainian officials expect US military technology to turn the tide on the battlefield in Kiev’s favor. Russia currently has overwhelming air superiority on the front line.

Moscow perceives the promised boost to Kiev’s air power as escalatory and a potential nuclear risk, considering that F-16s are capable of deploying American B61 nuclear gravity bombs. Some of those weapons are stored outside of the US, including in Belgium, as part of NATO’s nuclear-sharing scheme.

The US State Department has seized the passport of former Marine and UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter, he told RT on Monday.

Ritter was on his way to Russia for the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) when he was pulled off the plane and had his documents confiscated.

“I was boarding the flight. Three [police] officers pulled me aside. They took my passport. When asked why, they said ‘orders of the State Department’. They had no further information for me,” Ritter told RT. “They pulled my bags off the plane, then escorted me out of the airport. They kept my passport.”

Ritter is a former US Marine Corps intelligence officer, who later served as the US and UN weapons inspector in Iraq. He is also a RT contributor, writing about international security, military affairs, Russia, and the Middle East, as well as arms control and nonproliferation.

He most recently visited Russia in January, spending time in Chechnya, Moscow and St. Petersburg, among other places.

The most recent post on Ritter’s Telegram channel put the Clooney Foundation for Justice on notice for its alleged crusade against “Russian propagandists.”

“Here I am. In your face. If telling the truth about Russia makes me a propagandist in your book, then I accept the title,” he wrote. “Bring it on. I’ll school you on the First Amendment.”

“You have zero concept of what free speech is. Try and arrest me and you’ll find out. In spades. It’s war,” he added.

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has largely failed in his attempts to drum up support among Asian countries for his peace formula, ahead of a conference in Switzerland later this month, the Washington Post reported on Monday. Moscow has dismissed Kiev’s roadmap for ending the conflict as unrealistic because it does not correspond to “realities on the ground.”

On Sunday, Zelensky made an appearance at the Shangri-La Dialogue annual security conference in Singapore. He met with several senior officials from the region, including Indonesian president-elect Prabowo Subianto as well as the president and prime minister of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Lawrence Wong.

“We want Asia to know what is going on in Ukraine, Asia to support the end of the war,” Zelensky said at a news conference.

According to the Washington Post, however, Kiev has “failed to generate in Asia the same sort of emotional, existential angst that it has in much of the West.” Part of the reason may be that Asian nations have long been skeptical about the West “preaching about the international order and universal values,” the newspaper writes.

The media outlet quoted Raja Mohan from the Institute of South Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore as explaining that “realists in the chancelleries [of parts of Asia] never believed the [Western] rhetoric because they always knew there was a difference between what the West said and what it did.”

East Timor’s president, José Ramos-Horta, who supports the peace conference, admits that there is a lack of solidarity with regards to the Ukraine conflict in Asia.

“It is viewed in much of the Global South as a European and American and Russian war. Partly, this has to do with the US and Europe’s incomprehensible tolerance of Israel’s brutal war on the Palestinians,”the official told reporters.

At the Singapore conference, Zelensky also lamented that “Ukraine does not have any powerful connections with China because China does not want it,” claiming that Beijing has become an “instrument” in Moscow’s hands.

While more than 100 countries have said they will be sending their delegations to the Swiss-hosted peace summit, the US and China will either skip the gathering or send emissaries rather than their heads of state.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will not be attending either, his office told TASS last month. According to media reports, his Brazilian counterpart Lula da Silva will be absent as well.

In April, Russian President Vladimir Putin described the upcoming conference as “nonsense,”given that Moscow has not been invited. His spokesman, Dmitry Peskov argued last Tuesday that “getting together and seriously discussing the Ukraine conflict without our [Russia’s] participation is absurd.”

Ritter was slated to participate in the annual St.Petersburg International Economic Forum as a guest speaker.

“As I was boarding my flight out of New York I was pulled aside by three CBP officers, who seized my passport. When asked why, they said orders of the State Department. No further information was provided. My bags were removed from the flight, and I was escorted out of the airport,” the former US Marine intelligence officer told Sputnik.

Scott Ritter added that his passport was not given back. He said he will appeal the decision.

Ritter believes US authorities are afraid of his participation in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

  

“Is this done under the First Amendment to the US Constitution or the Fourth?” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova asked sarcastically, commenting on Scott Ritter's removal from his flight to Russia and the confiscation of his passport.

 

The First Amendment to the US Constitution guarantees, among other things, non-interference with the freedoms of speech and assembly, while the Fourth Amendment prohibits unreasonable searches and detentions.

SPIEF is the largest annual Russian business event in the economic sphere, and is attended by dozens of politicians and entrepreneurs from around the world. This year, the forum will take place on June 5-8.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has ditched an ambitious five-year plan to provide Ukraine with €100 billion ($108 billion) in military aid after facing pushback from members of the bloc, Bloomberg reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.

In April, several Western media outlets said that Stoltenberg had presented a draft long-term military support plan for Ukraine. The proposal was designed in part to guard against any cut in US support if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House, diplomats said. Earlier this year, Trump called for providing aid to Ukraine only in the form of loans. He also insisted that European allies match Washington’s level of assistance to Kiev.

The Stoltenberg plan has reportedly been questioned by several NATO members who seek clarification from the bloc’s secretary general on where and how the enormous sum of money would be obtained. The unnamed officials told Politico last month that the plan was “confusing”and that the €100 million figure would be revised.

Earlier this week, a NATO diplomat told FT that Ukrainian authorities were “not super thrilled” with the offer either, saying that the package would in practice only duplicate bilateral and EU-managed commitments and not actually represent fresh cash.

Instead, Stoltenberg is expected to submit an updated plan to provide Kiev with lethal and non-lethal aid of around €40 billion annually, the people told Bloomberg. The new proposal will reportedly be discussed by NATO defense ministers next week.

Under the new plan, which is aimed at providing more transparency about what Ukraine’s supporters contribute, the amount of assistance from each NATO member would be determined on the basis of a percentage of their gross domestic product. The US would reportedly account for nearly half of the aid, with the other 31 members providing the rest.

The sources also told the news outlet that Türkiye has cautioned that any coordination of military assistance for Ukraine could create the perception of greater involvement of the bloc in the conflict.

Last month, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Budapest was opposed to the initial plan, explaining that since the aid was to be collected over five years, this meant NATO “expects the hostilities to continue for this period.” The diplomat added that Hungary does not plan to participate in arming Ukraine or training its soldiers. The country’s prime minister, Viktor Orban, has expressed the view that NATO is getting closer to war with Russia every week.
