a very young hillbilly vice president that is not picked for being woke or coloured....

Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for US president in the upcoming November election, has tapped JD Vance as his running mate.

The announcement was made on the first day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Monday evening.

James David “JD” Vance is currently the Republican senator from Ohio. He was elected in 2022 to replace the retiring GOP Senator Rob Portman.

After graduating from high school, Vance enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served as a combat correspondent with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, on deployment in Iraq.

He later got a law degree from Yale, but gained national attention for his 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, in which he wrote about his childhood and the family values of Appalachian Americans. The Washington Post called him the “voice of the Rust Belt,” referring to the former industrial heartland of America that fell victim to the economic realities of globalization.

Vance had been a critic of Trump in 2016 but has since embraced his populist agenda and received Trump’s endorsement for the Senate race.

“Look, I was wrong about Donald Trump,” Vance told Fox News last month. “I didn’t think he was going to be a good president. He was a great president, and it’s one of the reasons why I’m working so hard to make sure he gets a second term.”

Vance has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s agenda in the Senate, as well as a critic of US funding for Ukraine, among other things.

Two other rumored running-mate picks have endorsed Trump’s choice of Vance, with former Democrat Tulsi Gabbard calling it “a good choice.”

“So proud of my friend, classmate, and fellow southwest Ohioan today,” said Vivek Ramaswamy. “He’ll be an outstanding Vice President and I look forward to everything ahead for him and for our country.”

Trump made the VP announcement while the convention roll call was still going on, just minutes after he got enough delegates to make him the official nominee. His children Eric, Donald Jr. and Tiffany announced the Florida delegates that put Trump “over the top.”

US Special Counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution of former President Donald Trump over the alleged mishandling of classified documents has been thrown out, on grounds that his secondment to the case was not legal.

Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate Trump for supposedly keeping classified documents at his Florida home after leaving the White House, as well as probing an alleged conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election.

“None of the statutes cited as legal authority for the appointment gives the attorney general broad inferior-officer appointing power or bestows upon him the right to appoint a federal officer with the kind of prosecutorial power wielded by Special Counsel Smith,” Judge Aileen Cannon wrote.

The “strained statutory arguments, appeals to inconsistent history, or reliance on out-of-circuit authority” by Smith have not persuaded the court otherwise, Cannon added.

a young VP.....

Greg Simpson is a delegate from Milford Ohio, just a few dozen miles from Vance’s childhood home.

He had an inkling that Vance would be picked as Trump's VP nominee.

“Of the three on the shortlist, I don’t think you could have done better,” he says.

Democrats will make light of Vance’s anti-abortion views and previous opposition to Donald Trump, but Simpson is unbothered.

“If Trump is comfortable with him, then I am,” he says. “He’s flexible on some things, and that’s a good thing.”

covid....

There can be no vice-presidential debate until the Democrats can decide on their ticket, the Republican campaign said on Wednesday, in a thinly veiled reference to calls for US President Joe Biden to step down.

The Republicans formally nominated former President Donald Trump on Monday, while he announced Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate. Vice President Kamala Harris reached out to Vance with an offer of a debate, to be hosted by CBS News.

“We don’t know who the Democrat nominee for Vice President is going to be, so we can’t lock in a date before their convention,” Trump campaign senior adviser Brian Hughes said in a statement on Wednesday evening. “To do so would be unfair to Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, Gretchen Whitener, or whoever Kamala Harris picks as her running mate.”

The governors of California, Illinois and Michigan, respectively, have been floated as possible replacements for Harris should Biden withdraw from the ticket.

Many Democrats have been clamoring for the 81-year-old to do so, since his disastrous showing in the June 27 debate against Trump. California Congressman Adam Schiff, formerly a key player in the House Intelligence Committee, was the latest to urge Biden to “pass the torch.”

While Biden has refused to drop out of the race – or resign from the presidency – in a recorded interview aired on Wednesday he revealed the circumstances under which he might do so.

“If I had some medical condition that emerged,” this might make him reconsider, Biden told BET. He insisted he was still fit for the job, however.

Speculations about ousting Biden from the ticket were temporarily relegated from the headlines by the attempted assassination of Trump on Saturday. The Republican candidate narrowly escaped death at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The US Secret Service has yet to give a satisfactory explanation how a shooter was able to get into position to open fire on the stage, killing one rally-goer and seriously injuring two more.

However, efforts by some Democrats to oust the president have apparently continued, with the New York Times claiming on Wednesday that a group of Democrat megadonors were “dangling money to members of Congress” willing to publicly call on Biden to step aside.

Harris has proposed three dates for the VP debates: July 23, August 12 and August 13. The  Democrats are scheduled to hold their convention in Chicago on August 19, but want to nominate Biden via a “virtual roll call” before then.

MEANWHILE:

US President Joe Biden is experiencing “mild symptoms” after contracting Covid-19 and will cancel his planned public appearances in Las Vegas to isolate in Delaware, the White House announced on Wednesday.

”The President presented this afternoon with upper respiratory symptoms, including rhinorrhea (runny nose) and a non-productive cough, with general malaise. He felt okay for his first event of the day, but given that he was not feeling better, point-of-care testing for COVID-19 was conducted, and the results were positive,” the president’s doctor, Kevin O’Connor, said.

The White House emphasized that Biden is “vaccinated and boosted and he is experiencing mild symptoms,” and has already received “his first dose of Paxlovid.”

Biden was scheduled to speak at the civil rights nonprofit UnidosUS conference on Wednesday, but the organizers said that the plan was scrapped.
