MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The real peace plan for Kiev will be the realization of the futility of the policy Ukraine is pursuing, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.

"There may be another plan, which may be truly peaceful — this is the Kiev regime's recognition of the futility of the policy they are pursuing," Peskov told reporters, commenting on the Kremlin's position on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's speech in the Ukrainian parliament with the "victory plan."

Zelensky's new "peace plan" may in fact repeat the US plan to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian, the official said, adding that in order to achieve peace, Kiev must "wake up" and realize the reasons that led it to conflict.

The “victory plan“ that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky unveiled to the public on Wednesday would merely lead to the hostilities continuing, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has told journalists. Peace can only come if the government in Kiev “sobers up” and acknowledges the roots of the conflict, he added.

Zelensky outlined his proposal to Western backers during an extraordinary parliamentary session, although some parts remain classified. Peskov was asked for comment while the speech was still underway. He said he did not expect to find any surprises when reading media accounts of Zelensky’s speech, considering that his “ethereal” plan had been widely discussed in the press for weeks.

“Most likely, it’s the same American plan to keep fighting a war with us to the last Ukrainian, which Zelensky has camouflaged and now calls a peace plan,” the Russian official said. Kiev can come up with a genuine roadmap for peace only if it “sobers up and reflects on the causes, which have led to the Ukraine conflict,” Peskov added.

Moscow has long considered the hostilities to be in essence a US-initiated proxy war against Russia in which Ukrainian soldiers are expended as cannon fodder with the complicity of their government. Some Western officials, including US Senator Lindsey Graham and ex-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, have publicly praised the Ukrainians’ willingness to fight Russia to the last person.

Zelensky has been pitching many elements of his proposal to Western leaders for over a year. According to his remarks on Wednesday, the plan includes an immediate invitation for Ukraine to join NATO, Western support for military action on Russian soil, permission for long-range strikes with Western weapons deep inside Russia, and deployment of certain long-range conventional weapons in Ukrainian for “deterrence.”

He also offered the West access to Ukrainian natural resources and the services of battle-hardened Ukrainian troops as part of the proposal. Zelensky stressed that, unless his government is propped up as requested, Russia rather than the US and its allies will benefit from Ukraine's reserves of uranium, titanium, lithium, and graphite.

While promoting the plan in Western capitals, Zelensky “gave allies just three months to adopt the blueprint’s main tenets,” according to the Associated Press. US President Joe Biden, who was the first to be presented with the Ukrainian document, was reportedly unconvinced by its content.

Officials in Kiev claim that the classified part of the plan includes specific requests for weapons, but some commentators suspect that it may also hide unpopular policy changes in Ukraine, such as another reduction of the minimum conscription age.

Grassroots anti-AUKUS campaign, Labor Against War, has called on the federal Labor government to reveal the secret political undertakings it has said it has made to the US government as a condition for the continued pursuit of nuclear-powered submarines.

Labor Against War national convenor Marcus Strom said: “ALP members are horrified that the Albanese government has made confidential commitments to the United States concerning the operation of any US-supplied nuclear submarines delivered under the AUKUS agreement and concerning the disposal of any nuclear waste.

“Unfortunately, we can only expect the worst from such undertakings, otherwise why would they be secret? Commentators have speculated they relate to the US being able to commandeer such submarines during any conflict the US has with China.”

Labor Against War members met nationally over the weekend to build on momentum against AUKUS, after party elders Gareth Evans and Paul Keating have spoken out.

“Paul Keating is spot on when he says the membership abhors AUKUS. We indeed do not expect these policies from a Labor government,” Mr Strom said.

“We will be writing to every ALP candidate ahead of the federal election seeking to make clear their views on AUKUS and our stance in any war between the US and China.”

The LAW meeting also called on the federal government to reveal if Australian intelligence is involved in providing targeting information to the Israel Defence Forces, either directly or indirectly, such as through the Joint Defence Facility at Pine Gap.

“Australians have made it clear they do not want to be dragged into more wars by the United States, either with China or into the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

“The Albanese government must reveal its secret political undertakings on AUKUS. And if Pine Gap is involved in any intelligence fuelling the Middle East war, it must make that public and stop providing such information immediately,” Mr Strom said.

The signing of treaties with secret provisions, priority funding for US and UK military infrastructure, and the sentiment of senior US officials are all evidence enough that AUKUS is counter to Australia having an independent foreign and defence policy.

We further note that AUKUS Pillar II is part of interoperability of advanced military technology – robotics, artificial intelligence and missile technology – between the US and Australia, further enmeshing Australia into the US war machine.

This [branch/party unit] therefore supports comments by former foreign minister Gareth Evans that “Australia’s no-holds-barred embrace of AUKUS is more likely than not to prove one of the worst defence and foreign policy decisions our country has made”.

We support recent comment from Paul Keating who states:

• the Albanese Government, through [AUKUS] and the ambitious basing of American military forces on Australian soil, is doing nothing other than abrogating Australia’s sovereign right to command its own continent and its military forces.
• The ALP membership abhors AUKUS and everything that smacks of national sublimation. It does not expect these policies from a Labor Government.

We therefore call on our federal MP and senators to make representations to caucus for Australia to withdraw from AUKUS.

Further, we call on the Federal Labor Government to:

• Make public the secret provisions of recently signed AUKUS treaties with the United States and the United Kingdom
• Publicly commit to never accepting, handling or storing nuclear waste of any kind from the US or UK
• freeze AUKUS funding for US and UK manufacturing and instead prioritise investment in Australian manufacturing and the transition to a renewable energy economy.

Labor Against War Statement on Israel’s War on Gaza and Lebanon

Labor Against War calls for an immediate ceasefire to end Israel’s ongoing genocidal war in Gaza and in the unfolding war in Lebanon.

We oppose Australian political or diplomatic support or involvement in arming Israel in its pursuit of these wars. We call on the Australian government to disclose any involvement of its security organisations – including activity at Pine Gap – to provide targeting intelligence to the Israeli military, and to cease all such activity immediately.

Australia should sanction military trade with Israel by cancelling all arms or military goods export licences to Israel or bound for Israel, including Australian made components for the F35 Joint Strike Fighters.

Australia should suspend diplomatic relations with Israel until a ceasefire is called.

Labor Against War opposes any Australian involvement in these wars, including the deployment of Navy vessels, intelligence, command or logistics support.

We will vigorously campaign in the Labor Party, with the labour and peace movement and wider community to achieve these aims and for a just resolution of these conflicts based on international peace and human solidarity.

US President Joe Biden has unveiled a new military aid package for Ukraine worth $425 million, promising more support in the future. 

The package includes missiles for the NASAMS and Stinger air defense systems, rockets for the HIMARS launchers, and artillery shells. The US would continue to work with “some 50 Allies and partners” to “meet Ukraine’s urgently needed battlefield requirements,” the White House said. 

Biden spoke with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky over the phone on Wednesday, promising to “intensify security assistance planning alongside international partners in order to ensure that Ukraine has the equipment it needs to prevail,” according to the readout of the call. 

Zelensky thanked the US for its support. “The leadership of President Biden in uniting the world and the firm bipartisan support in America have been crucial and helped Ukraine to prevail and defend our independence,” he wrote on Telegram.

The Ukrainian leader unveiled a five-point “victory plan” on Wednesday, which is yet to be formally endorsed by Kiev’s Western backers. NATO countries have so far declined Zelensky’s requests to immediately invite Ukraine to join the US-led alliance, or to lift restrictions on the use of Western-supplied longer-range weapons for strikes deep inside Russia.

Ukraine has argued that these restrictions, together with delays in weapons deliveries, have contributed to its recent setbacks on the battlefield, as Russian troops have been steadily gaining more ground in the Donbass.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has dismissed Zelensky’s proposals as a “set of incoherent slogans.” Moscow has repeatedly said that the conflict could only be settled on its terms.
