The Kremlin has refused to comment on US President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son. The outgoing US leader went back on an earlier pledge reiterated numerous times by his staff, that he would not interfere in criminal cases against his son, Hunter Biden.

In June, the younger Biden was convicted on three felony counts of lying about his long-standing and recurring drug addiction when buying a handgun in 2018. In a separate case, he pleaded guilty in September to three felonies and six misdemeanor tax offenses, with the sentencing scheduled for this month. 

When asked for a comment on Monday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov replied: “We have nothing to say, these are American internal affairs.”

Speaking to Izvesita the same day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described the presidential pardon as a “caricature of democracy.”

In a statement late on Sunday, President Biden announced that the “full and unconditional pardon” applies to offenses that his son “has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 1, 2014 through December 1, 2024, including but not limited to all offenses charged or prosecuted.”

Biden claimed that his son had been prosecuted “selectively and unfairly” because of familial ties, pointing the finger at his Republican opponents.

Since Joe Biden assumed the top job in 2021, several prominent GOP politicians have accused his son of acting as a middleman in corrupt dealings overseas – a claim vehemently denied by the president.

Taking to his Truth Social platform on Sunday, President-elect Donald Trump described Biden’s decision as an “abuse and miscarriage of Justice.”

Billionaire tech tycoon Elon Musk, whom the Republican has appointed to head a so-called Department of Government Efficiency, suggested on X that Biden’s pardon was “impugning the integrity of the United States.”

Several Republican members of Congress have also slammed the outgoing president’s clemency toward his son.

Andy Biggs claimed that “Joe Biden will go down as one of the most corrupt presidents in American history,” with fellow lawmaker Josh Hawley characterizing the pardon as an “outrageous abuse of the rule of law.”

The Republican-controlled House Committee on Oversight and Accountability also released a statement, saying that “Joe Biden’s unprecedented abuse of power has been a stain on the honor of the US presidency.”

US President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter was not a change of heart, but a long-held plan to insulate the family from corruption charges, RT contributor Tara Reade has said.

A former aide to Joe Biden, Reade made the remarks on Monday while discussing the issue with RT’s Rory Suchet.

Biden pardoned his son late on Sunday after having repeatedly pledged not to. In June, the younger Biden was convicted on three felony counts of lying about his long-standing drug addiction when buying a handgun in 2018. In a separate case, he pleaded guilty in September to three felonies and six misdemeanor tax offenses, with the sentencing scheduled for this month.

The pardon applies to all offenses that were or may have been committed between January 1, 2014 and December 1, 2024, according to the White House.

“It’s unbelievable how much they’ve been able to get away with, just in plain sight,” Reade said, adding “but that’s what they did.”

Biden had always planned to pardon his son, she suggested, saying that the move was also intended to shield the outgoing president himself.

“This not only clears Hunter Biden; it clears Joe Biden. This is to protect all the corruption.”

Recalling her time working for Biden, Reade claimed that he “honestly believes that there’s the law for everyone else and the law for him.” The move to pardon his son is just one example “of the two-tier justice system,” she explained.

Reade also cited a panel she attended last week with former US national security adviser Michael Flynn, who she said described the Ukraine conflict as a “money-laundering operation” that Biden and his family are benefitting from.

Since Biden assumed the presidency in 2021, several prominent GOP politicians have accused his son of acting as a middleman in corrupt dealings overseas. Both men have consistently denied the claims.

The United States deliberately restricted military aid to Kiev in order to let the country “bleed” rather than “win,”a former senior CIA official has claimed, describing the strategy pursued by then-US President Joe Biden during the early stages of the conflict.

Ukraine has repeatedly requested advanced American weapons systems that were initially withheld or delayed by Washington.

In an interview with The Times published on Friday, Ralph Goff – former head of the CIA’s operations in Europe and Eurasia – said Biden was reluctant to send the necessary equipment due to fears that Russia “will go nuclear.” He argued that the decision to hold back key weapons turned the conflict into a prolonged and devastating war.

“Had we equipped the Ukrainians at that time with proper weaponry, they might have been able to drive the Russians all the way out of the country,” he said. “It didn’t happen. It set the stage for this longer, protracted, drawn out, meat grinder war that we are witnessing today.”

The former CIA officer, a vocal supporter of Kiev, lamented that Western governments had “allowed themselves to be bamboozled by Vladimir Putin and his nuclear-saber rattling.”

“So they gave the Ukrainians this weaponry, but they never gave them enough to win. They only gave them enough to bleed,” he added.

He also relayed a warning from a Ukrainian official who predicted that without a ceasefire, the front line would become an “incredibly lethal environment” by late summer. “It will be a 20–50km death zone,” Goff said, quoting the official, “where you can’t move because there are so many drones in the air and robots on the ground and sensors and mines.”

The Biden administration provided more than $174 billion in aid to Kiev following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, including dozens of military packages.

The approach shifted under Donald Trump, who returned to office in January. His administration has pushed for direct negotiations between Moscow and Kiev and reportedly proposed a peace plan that includes the recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea and a freeze along the existing front lines.

Under the proposal, Moscow would retain control over parts of the four former Ukrainian regions that have voted to join Russia.

Russia has said it is ready for talks “without preconditions”and announced a 72-hour ceasefire for the Victory Day holiday. The proposal, however, has been rejected by Vladimir Zelensky.

Moscow has stressed that any agreement to end hostilities must reflect territorial realities and address the underlying causes of the conflict, including Ukraine’s NATO ambitions and the continued delivery of Western weapons.
