hoping for global warming....

President Donald Trump has made his fixation on Greenland abundantly clear—enough so to unnerve many of the people who live there. “I think Greenland is going to be something that maybe is in our future,” he told reporters this week, once again teasing the notion of annexation.

The Truth About Trump’s Greenland Campaign
When the president talks about security in the Arctic, he’s talking about climate change.
By Brett Simpson

Vice President J. D. Vance is traveling there today, after what he called the “excitement” around his wife’s plan to attend a famous dogsledding race. As part of the trip, National Security Adviser Michael Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright were scheduled to visit a U.S. military base; Greenland’s prime minister, Mute B. Egede, called the visit a “provocation.” Now dogsledding is out, and the entire delegation will together travel to the base.

Their aim, the vice president said in a video on X, is to check up on Greenland’s security, because unnamed other countries could “use its territories and its waterways to threaten the United States.” And these are real concerns for the United States, rooted in climate change: As polar ice melts away, superpowers are vying for newly open shipping routes in the Arctic Ocean and largely unexplored mineral and fossil-fuel reserves.

Arctic warming could pose a direct threat to America’s security interests too: Alaska could have new vulnerabilities to both China and Russia; changes in ocean salinity and temperature might interfere with submarine detection systems; the extremes of climate change, including permafrost thaw in Russia, could drive economic instability, social unrest, and territorial claims.

MEANWHILE:

Al Gore, the 45th Vice President of the United States (1993–2001), granted a rare interview to FRANCE 24 in Paris. The renowned environmentalist took stock of the green transition, with Donald Trump's return to the White House expected to usher in a comeback of fossil fuels in the US. But for Gore, "the renewable energy revolution is unstoppable". He also said that Trump "actively deceived the American people" during his election campaign by denying all knowledge of the conservative blueprint Project 2025, adding that "the reaction to Trump's assault on democracy is very, very strong".

big melt....

A study published Monday predicts that melting ice in Greenland will cause sea levels around the world to rise by at least 27 centimeters by 2100.

This would be more than double an earlier prediction by a United Nations body. Last year’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report predicted a sea level rise of six to 13 centimeters by the year 2100.

The researchers studied the difference between the amount of ice that accumulates on Greenland’s glaciers and the amount of ice that melts at the edges of the glaciers. Snowfall in the mountains of Greenland flows down and feeds the glaciers. But in recent years, there has been less snow and more melting. The scientists said this has created an imbalance, and melting is exceeding the amount of ice accumulation.

The study appeared in the scientific publication Nature.

The researchers said, even if global temperatures do not rise above current levels, the ice at the edges of Greenland’s ice sheet will continue melting.

Richard Alley is a glaciologist at Penn State University who was not part of the study. He said the melting ice is similar to what happens when an ice cube is put in a cup of tea. He said that glaciers will continue to decrease in size because they are in warmer air, just like an ice cube will melt if placed in warm tea.

The researchers predicted that 3.3 percent of Greenland’s ice will melt. One writer estimated that more than 110 trillion tons of ice is going to melt.

William Colgan helped write the study. He studies glaciers at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland. He described the ice this way: “It’s dead ice. It’s just going to melt and disappear from the ice sheet.”

The researchers used the same method that is used to study ice loss on mountain glaciers. But they extended it to include all of Greenland.

russian arctic....

The US-led NATO bloc views the Arctic as a “bridgehead” for future conflicts and is actively training troops to operate in the far north, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.

Speaking at the International Arctic Forum in Murmansk on Thursday, he stated that Russia would do its best to uphold its national interests and sovereignty in the region.

The number of Russian forces deployed in the Arctic is bound to grow to meet the growing challenges there, Putin said.

“We are, of course, concerned by the fact that NATO countries as a whole are more frequently designating the far north as a bridgehead for possible conflicts, practicing the use of troops in these conditions, including their new recruits from Finland and Sweden,” he declared.

Moscow has been “closely monitoring” the situation in the region, and has taken “an adequate response approach by increasing the combat capabilities of the armed forces and modernizing military infrastructure facilities,” the president explained.

“I would like to emphasize that Russia has never threatened anyone in the Arctic,” he said, adding that Russia will not tolerate any encroachments on its sovereignty and will “reliably protect” its national interests.

Maintaining “peace and stability” in the Arctic is the key to the long-term development of the region, in addition to “improvement of the quality of life of people and preservation of the unique natural environment,” Putin said.

“The stronger our positions are, the more significant the results will be,” he stressed.

Russia’s strong posture in the Arctic gives more opportunities to “launch global international projects”there with the participation of “friendly nations,” and potentially with Western states as well. “Should they, of course, show interest in working together, and I am sure that the time for such projects will definitely come,” the president stated.
