from the streets of Chicago.....

A new Pope has been elected by the conclave of cardinals at the Vatican. A US-born prelate, Robert Francis Prevost, has been named as the new pontiff. He is the first American Pope in history.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Prevost, 69, has taken the name Leo XIV. He spent much of his church career as a missionary in Latin America and worked for a decade in Trujillo, Peru, before becoming bishop of the Peruvian city of Chicalayo.

Prevost was made a cardinal in 2023 and was appointed head of the Congregation for Bishops by the late Pope Francis the same year. The Congregation for Bishops is a powerful department within the Roman Curia of the Catholic Church that oversees the selection of most new bishops. The appointment elevated Prevost’s status to a potential papal candidate.

It is the third time in a row now that a Pope has been elected on the second day of the conclave. The late Pope Francis was elected after five rounds of voting. His predecessor, Benedict XVI, was elected in four.

The support of at least 89 of the 133 cardinal electors participating in the conclave was needed to elect a new bishop of Rome. In accordance with tradition, a senior cardinal first addressed the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica with the words: “Habemus papam!” – Latin for “We have a pope!”

The new Pope himself then appeared on the balcony to deliver his first words as the pontiff. “Peace be with you all,” Leo XIV said, adding that it was “the first greetings of the resurrected Christ.” He then explained that he would “also like this greeting of peace to enter our hearts and our families.”

Pope Leo XIV’s predecessor, Francis passed away at the age of 88 on April 21, a day after greeting worshippers gathered for Easter Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was the first Jesuit and the first Latin American to lead the Catholic Church.

The Conclave Just Did the Unthinkable
What an American pope means for the Catholic Church and the world
By Francis X. Rocca

Until today, nearly every Vatican insider agreed on one thing: The United States would never produce a pope, at least not while the country remains a superpower. A citizen of the world’s dominant nation could not become the leader of the world’s largest religious organization without dramatically upsetting the global balance of geopolitical and cultural power. Or so the thinking went.

And yet, the conclave that concluded today in Rome has chosen the first American pope in the history of the Catholic Church: Robert Francis Prevost. Making the milestone even more remarkable is that Prevost was chosen on just the second day of voting by the most geographically diverse body of papal electors in history. Perhaps most surprising of all is that the Church’s first-ever American pope was selected during Donald Trump’s presidency, as Washington assumes a more contentious stance toward the rest of the world.

Prevost, who has taken the papal name Leo XIV, was born in Chicago (with the accent to prove it) and attended an American school (Villanova University), but he spent much of his adult life outside the United States. Leo led the Augustinian religious order from Rome and lived in Peru, serving as a missionary bishop. During his first speech as pope from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica today, he switched easily from fluent Italian to fluent Spanish. Many in the Catholic hierarchy tend to identify American clergy as parochial; they will find that Leo goes against type. Given his association with Peru, some in the Vatican even talked about him as though he’ll be the second pope from Latin America—after Francis—rather than the first from America.
