not tonight, napoleon... I have a headache...

Jeux de mains, jeux de vilains… Hand games always end badly: This saying is very old; possibly originated in the Middle Ages, when hunting and military exercises were only permitted to the nobility, while peasants, then called villains, fought with their arms and hands.

Duels at that time were fought with swords but were only suitable for the aristocracy, and the villains settled quarrels only with their fists or sticks.

Macron has been slapped in the face in more ways than one
Whatever happened between the French president and his wife on their trip to Vietnam, it completely overshadowed the politics of the visit

French President Emmanuel Macron went to Vietnam to ink some massive deals – like a €9 billion Airbus order, which was supposed to be the centerpiece of the trip.

But before he could even set foot on Vietnamese soil, as the plane’s hatch opened, his wife Brigitte was caught on camera doing what can only be described as a vertical push-up right on Macron’s face.

At first glance, it looked like perhaps she was just trying to set the vibe for the visit, with a reenactment of what happened to the French the last time they got a little too confident in Vietnam. In any case, suddenly this image of the presidential couple had everyone zooming in like it was a lost Da Vinci.

Cue the Elysee’s damage control. First: It’s a deepfake. Then: The Russians did it. And finally: Okay fine, it’s real, but it’s just two people “decompressing.” Let the one among us who’s never “unwound” by shoving our spouse in the face cast the first baguette.

Final answer? Apparently so. A moment of complicity between longtime partners. Like a secret handshake. To the face. By the way, do the Elysee flaks themselves also count as conspiracy theorists? They’re the ones who cycled through every possible scapegoat short of blaming climate change – until they realized the Americans had the raw footage too.

Of course this slapstick moment didn’t make it into the glossy PR reel, which also featured Macron and his wife descending from the presidential plane. He appeared to gallantly offer her an arm as they deplaned – which she promptly ignored. His other hand formed a fist. For whom? Who knows. But France should probably duck.

“France is a power of peace and balance,” Macron wroteabove the promotional video on X. it would have been a hard sell posting that directly above a video that starts with him catching a couple of “peaceful” palms straight to the jaw.

“When some choose to withdraw, France chooses to build bridges,” he added. Sure, but it kind of looked like you withdrew to the other side of the cabin, my guy.

Weird? Well, maybe to the peasants. But apparently, it’s completely normal for the presidential couple to throw hands whenever someone cracks a joke. “It’s not even a slap…it’s a gesture that mimics a punch in the face. We’ve seen this sketch 100 times, it’s their way of decompressing before official performances, explained a source described by Le Parisien as “close to” Macron. So, their opening act for a show of diplomacy on the world stage is something that looks like it was cribbed from a Three Stooges sketch? Alrighty then.

In instances where you and I may laugh, these two just go full Rocky and Adrian, minus the gloves. You know they do have gloves though. We’ve already seen them used for Macron’s boxing photo shoots. The ones that absolutely are not meant to show how he’s going to personally fight Russian President Vladimir Putin. That is, if he ever gets past Brigitte in round one.

Macron later expressed frustration with everyone trying to decode what he insists is totally standard behavior. “We are teasing each other and having a bit of fun with my wife. I am surprised by this. It becomes a kind of... geoplanetary catastrophe where some are even developing theories, and I see a lot of crazy people spending their day explaining all these interpretations in videos,” Macron explained“There are people who watched videos and think that I shared a bag of cocaine, that I had a one-on-one with the Turkish president, and that right now, I am in the process of having a quarrel with my wife. None of this is true, yet these three videos are real.”

Oh, yeah – the napkin on the train to Ukraine that some folks mistook for a bag of cocaine. Maybe because Macron’s face looked a bit red as he snatched it up when the media walked in. Almost forgot about that one. Thanks for the reminder. Indeed, who hasn’t casually left a used Kleenex just sitting in the middle of the table with other folks. It’s a wonder that no one has yet speculated that Brigitte wasn’t just trying to give Macron one last hit of Kleenex before he stepped out of the plane. One for the road, as it were.

As for the “one-on-one” with Erdogan? That’s a stretch. Macron’s flattering himself. It was more of a one-on-none. Erdogan held Macron’s finger like he was selecting a baguette from a Parisian bakery. If dignity were Kleenex, Macron would have struggled to blow his nose on what was left – let alone use it for his next Kleenex Rorschach Test.

Yes, Macron technically came to Vietnam to ink major defense and aerospace deals in a power move to reassert France’s relevance in the Indo-Pacific, counterbalance China, and show that France can still punch above its weight (even without Brigitte’s spontaneous contribution). But between the bungled PR, the conspiracy fodder, and Erdogan’s diplomatic wedgie, it’s hard to tell if Macron’s trips are actual diplomacy – or rather just episodes of reality TV with an unlimited travel budget.

meanwhile....

French President Emmanuel Macron’s statements in support of the Ukraine peace process are not credible, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

In a Telegram post on Friday, Zakharova cited a recent France Info article about a Ukrainian intelligence unit known as the ‘International Revenge’ tactical group, where foreign fighters, including French nationals, are training for frontline operations.

French citizens “were taken aback by a blunt publication” that the country’s soldiers are already “serving the Kiev regime,” Zakharova wrote.

According to the report, the unit includes both civilians and military personnel from France. Some told the outlet they had already been deployed to the front.

Zakharova pointed to what she described as the unit’s neo-Nazi ideology, saying that its name was no coincidence.

“The group’s symbols bear all the hallmarks of neo-Nazi revanchism,” she wrote, citing skull insignias, dark imagery, and the Latin slogan ‘Memento Audere Semper’ (‘Remember to dare always’). The motto is known to have been used by Italian fascist and Mussolini ally Gabriele D’Annunzio in reference to the MAS, or ‘Motoscafo Armato Silurante’ – a class of fast torpedo boats used by the Italian Royal Navy in both World Wars.

“These French revanchist neo-fascists are not even hiding,” Zakharova added. “They openly talk about coming from France to fight Russians “without sparing bullets” and say they hope to one day face Russia in battle.”

Zakharova said the revelations cast doubt on Macron’s talk of commitment to the peace process.

France has provided more than €3.7 billion ($4.1 billion) in military aid to Ukraine since the escalation of the conflict in February 2022, according to the Kiel Institute.

Macron has advocated deploying French troops to Ukraine in the event of a peace deal between Kiev and Moscow, arguing that it could help deter Russia. In March, he announced a French-British plan to prepare such a “reassurance force” in the event of a ceasefire. The announcement sparked protests in Paris against what demonstrators called NATO’s militaristic stance.

Moscow has repeatedly warned it will not accept any NATO presence in Ukraine, citing the military bloc’s expansion in Europe as a core reason for the conflict.

Russian and Ukrainian delegations met in Istanbul on May 16 for their first formal talks since 2022. The meeting led to the largest prisoner exchange to date and an agreement to draft written proposals ahead of the next round of talks, which Russia proposed for June 2.

macron stinks....

Emmanuel Macron is undoubtedly a stowaway

Mohamed Lamine KABA

In a constantly changing geopolitical landscape, marked by tensions in Ukraine and negotiations stretching from Istanbul to Riyadh, France, under the presidency of Emmanuel Macron, is experiencing an erosion of its influence. Faced with a resilient Russia and an unpredictable America under the Trump administration, the European Union, despite ambitious rhetoric, finds itself marginalized from crucial decisions. France’s failure in Africa, in the face of the Russo-Chinese partnership, and its gradual withdrawal in Asia and Eurasia, as well as in America and Oceania, reveal a notable strategic decline. Macron, whose statements are struggling to materialize, symbolizes a Europe relegated to an auxiliary role, humiliated and disoriented in a world order open to Hobbesian predation. Relying on American power, notably through NATO, to establish his credibility, his calls for “strategic autonomy” for Europe from the whimsical and insipid, perverse and narcissistic elites of the same factory as him remain in vain in the face of the EU’s inability to assert itself independently, as evidenced by the Riyadh negotiations where, ousted by Trump, the reactionary Europeans could only orchestrate a hasty response from the Elysée. This sidelining underlines a Macron benefiting from Western supremacy without assuming the costs, thus confirming his position as a free rider, in the strict sense (benefit without participation) as in the broad sense (posture without substance).Macron, whose statements are struggling to materialize, symbolizes a Europe relegated to an auxiliary role, humiliated and disoriented in a world order

Emmanuel Macron as a stowaway through the prism of Olson’s theory

Emmanuel Macron, through the prism of Mancur Olson’s “free rider” theory, emerges as an emblematic figure of this concept, exploiting international dynamics without substantial engagement, and revealing a strategic dependence on dominant actors. His rhetoric tinged with Russophobia, embellished with hostile statements towards Russia, collides with a structural inability to influence the Ukrainian conflict. Lacking autonomous leadership, Macron systematically aligns himself with American positions, including those of Donald Trump, as demonstrated by his positions during the peace negotiations from Istanbul to Riyadh, and then from Riyadh to Istanbul. This dependence illustrates a France relegated on the international scene, incapable of realizing the European “strategic autonomy” that it advocates. The gap between rhetoric and actual capabilities is weakening France’s stature, confining it to a subordinate role in an international order where the United States, Russia, and China are redefining geopolitical balances, and where the European Union is being relegated to the background. This is the emergence of a new Yalta-type (1945) power triangle, with the United Kingdom ceding its place to a China that is becoming increasingly powerful on the global chessboard.

Marginalization of the EU and erosion of French influence

The marginalization of the EU and the erosion of French influence are embodied by the Union’s exclusion from the peace talks in Riyadh and Istanbul, a major setback for Macron and Europe. While the United States and Russia dominate the discussions, the EU, despite Macron’s aspirations, is reduced to spectator status, symbolizing a decline in its overall influence. This relegation is spreading across various geopolitical spheres: in Africa, France is retreating in the face of the Russo-Chinese advance; in Asia, it is failing to counter the Sino-Russian entente; in the Americas, Macron’s attempts to assert himself are eclipsed by Trump’s preference for direct interactions with Putin. In Eurasia and Oceania, French influence is weakening, surpassed by nations with more pragmatic approaches. This deterioration, exacerbated by sterile anti-Russian rhetoric, confirms Macron’s inability to translate his ambitions into concrete strength. Thus, France and the EU, under his leadership, appear as peripheral players, unable to assert a position of strength in an increasingly polarized and ruthless international chessboard.

Finally, Macron’s episodes of humiliation – spanning from Africa to Asia, from Europe to the Americas, and from Oceania to Eurasia – culminated in a tense exchange with Turkish President Erdoğan, who blatantly displayed his contempt in a widely publicized diplomatic incident. This is exactly the price an exposed free rider pays: opprobrium.
