Faulkner may have conflict of interest with ALP job: Nelson

The Federal Opposition says there may be a conflict of interest with new Special Minister of State John Faulkner's presidency of the Labor Party.

Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson says Senator Faulkner's role involves decisions about the Electoral Act that directly affect political parties.

Dr Nelson says Prime Minister Kevin Rudd needs to address the issue.

"Mr Rudd, please explain to us, [to] the average Australian, how come you've got the president of the Australian Labor Party as the Special Minister of State, which is responsible for the Electoral Act, the Australian Electoral Commission and a range of other things, which actually have direct effects on the Labor Party?" he said.
