words that are terrifying to a petrol-sniffing US president....
Department of Energy adds three new words to its 'banned' list Members of the Energy Department have added the words "Climate Change," "green," and "decarbonization" to its ever-growing “list of words to avoid,” according to an internal memo sent to staffers at the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy last week. Ironically, the words are the heart of the EERE’s mission to reduce heat-trapping emissions that cause climate change and hazardous pollution from fossil fuels. It is also the latest in the second Trump administration's efforts to downplay the terrifying effects of climate change. “Please ensure that every member of your team is aware that this is the latest list of words to avoid — and continue to be conscientious about avoiding any terminology that you know to be misaligned with the Administration’s perspectives and priorities," the memo from acting director of external affairs Rachel Overbey read. According to Politico, the instructions apply to both public-facing and internal communications and cover documents. https://www.themirror.com/news/politics/department-energy-adds-three-new-1418426

shut down....
The US federal government has shut down for the first time in almost seven years after Republicans and Democrats failed to agree on a spending bill in the Senate.
The deadline to approve the funds for running the government expired on Wednesday, as both parties rejected each other’s spending plans in a back-to-back vote.
The Democrats refused to back the Republican bill while demanding an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies set to expire at the end of the year, along with the reversal of Medicaid cuts. The GOP framed their plan as a “clean,” non-partisan solution, but the Democrats argued that it would endanger the healthcare of many Americans.
Both sides blamed each other for the crisis.
Senate Republican leader John Thune said, “far-left interest groups and far-left Democrat members wanted a showdown with the president.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused the Republicans of “risking America’s healthcare” and refusing to negotiate in good faith.
The White House pointed the finger at the Democrats, with its website now featuring a clock marking the duration of the crisis and titled ‘Democrats Have Shut Down the Government’.
