Last year, I wrote an article about Cornerstone Church’s Zionist Pastor John Hagee, focusing on his prosperity gospel teachings, his support for modern Israel, and his emphasis on ‘end times’ prophecy. Another well-known Zionist pastor is Paula White, who serves as President Trump’s close spiritual advisor. Her background has often attracted tabloid attention.

Paula White: Trump’s Zionist Pastor and Israel’s Evangelical Power Broker

Paula White and her second husband, Randy White, started Without Walls International Church, a large Pentecostal church in Tampa, Florida. At its height, the church had over 20,000 members and was the seventh-largest in the country. Later, the church struggled with financial problems, which resulted in bankruptcy, the sale of the property, and significant downsizing. Allegations of infidelity involving the Whites were reported, and the couple subsequently divorced.

Following the divorce, White and married televangelist Benny Hinn were photographed by The National Enquirer leaving a hotel in Rome while holding hands. This led to accusations of an affair. In February 2011, Strang Communications, Hinn’s publisher, cited a breach of a morality clause in his contract and alleged an “inappropriate relationship” with White. Hinn agreed to repay a $300,000 book advance but did not fully satisfy this obligation.

White married Jonathan Cain, the keyboardist for the rock band Journey, in a private ceremony in 2015. It was her third marriage and Cain’s fourth. Soon after, she announced their marriage on social media, calling it a joyful, God-ordained union. She began using the hyphenated name White-Cain, which is unusual in evangelical circles.

In 2011, White gained control of New Destiny Christian Center after appointed to succeed the deceased Zachery Tims as its senior pastor. Around this time, White said she had a stroke, which led to an addiction to prescription medication. She described this period as a “midlife meltdown” with family issues, medical conditions, compassion fatigue (secondary traumatic stress), and other difficulties. She resigned in 2019, and the church was renamed City of Destiny with her son and his wife as senior pastors.

She set up Paula White Ministries as an auxiliary or subsidiary-like group called City of Destiny to maintain its tax-exempt status without filing full IRS Form 990 disclosures. In essence, tax evasion. She uses this entity for branding, TV broadcasts, books, online content, global outreach, donations, and partnerships to support her charismatic ministry and prosperity gospel teachings. Critics argue that donations to Paula White Ministries fund Paula White-Cain’s lavish lifestyle with a $3.5 million Trump Tower condo, a $2.6 million Tampa home, private jet charters, family salaries, and other extravagances. They also call her ministry blasphemous and based on theatrics.

In 2002, while flipping through TV channels, Trump came across White preaching on her televangelism show. He was impressed by her sermon about the “value of vision.” He later said she had “fire” and called her “fantastic” with the “it factor.” Trump has appeared on her TV show and faith summits after their initial contact.

During an interview with Frontline PBS, White-Cain said that Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign began with a six-hour prayer meeting at Trump Tower.

In February 2025, Trump appointed White-Cain as a special government employee and senior advisor to lead the new White House Faith Office. She will encourage faith-based participation in government, promote the prosperity gospel, and advocate for Israel. This appointment builds on her prior White House experience and demonstrates her direct access to the president as a “spiritual guru.”

Last fall, The Jerusalem Post placed her at number nine on its list of “10 Christian Zionists.” The paper noted that she “integrates her biblical teachings with a call to support Israel,” presents U.S. policy as prophetic fulfillment, leads pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and features Israeli leaders, including Netanyahu, on her broadcasts.
