MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Countries across Asia, Africa and the Middle East are increasing imports of Russian food products amid uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and concerns over the approaching El Nino climate phenomenon, Russia’s state-owned Rosselkhozbank (RSHB) told Sputnik on Sunday.

 

Africa, Asia Increase Food Imports From Russia Amid Looming El Nino Concerns

 

El Nino is a characterized by unusually warm sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The resulting temperature shifts can trigger major weather disruptions worldwide, causing droughts in some regions and flooding in others.

"During the first four months of 2026, Russian agricultural exports increased by 4.9 million tonnes, or 21.8%, compared with the same period last year... In particular, amid instability in the Strait of Hormuz and anticipated El Nino-related climate fluctuations, many countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East are building up agricultural stockpiles out of concern over potential fertilizer shortages and droughts," the bank said.

According to RSHB, Russian food exports to China rose by more than one-third in January–April 2026 compared with a year earlier. Egypt increased imports of Russian sunflower oil by more than 25% and dried chickpeas by 74%, while Algeria boosted purchases of Russian soybean oil by more than a quarter, RSHB said.

Russia also increased exports of pork and pork by-products to China by 89% year-on-year, reaching 37,000 tonnes, the bank added. That volume already amounts to nearly half of Russia’s total pork exports to China for all of last year, RSHB said.

"Russian food exporters benefit from several major competitive advantages, including stable production volumes, established logistics routes, friendly relations with importers in Asia and Africa, and, of course, high product quality. This facilitates their expansion, including into premium segments of high-margin markets such as China and the Arab world," RSHB’s Center for Industry Expertise said.

Forecasts published by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts in May said that the Pacific Ocean temperatures could rise more than 3 degrees Celsius above normal by September–October, potentially marking the second-highest El Nino temperature peak on record.

Heat wave grips Europe, triggering alerts and disruptions

Authorities accross Europe have warned of temperatures exceeding 39 and 40 degrees Celsius as a 'heat dome' sets in. Germany also faces the threat of extreme thunderstorms.

Europe was gripped by severe weather on Sunday as a prolonged heat wave set in across the region during the Northern Hemisphere's summer solstice.

Celebrated annually on June 21, the solstice also marks the start of Europe’s three hottest months.

According to meteorologists, the heat wave is being driven by a mass of hot air moving north from the Sahara, fueled by a strong high-pressure system known as the "African anticyclone."

The high-pressure system has created a so-called "heat dome," which traps hot air over Western and Central Europe, allowing temperatures to climb day after day.

Russia shipped a record volume of wheat to Tanzania in the 2025/26 season, exporting more than 850,000 tons, the Russian agriculture export agency Agroexport reported on Monday. 

The agency stated that the figure is 16% higher than the previous season and 47% above the five-year average. 

“Russia is a key supplier of wheat to Tanzania,” Agroexport said, adding that Russian exporters have steadily expanded their presence in the East African market in recent years.  

According to the estimates from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Tanzania imported around 1.5 million tons of wheat in the 2025/26 season, up 200,000 tons from the previous year and the highest level on record. 

Agroexport also reported that East African Community (EAC) countries are playing an increasingly important role in Russia’s wheat exports to Africa. Combined shipments to the bloc were about 3.5 million tons in the 2025/26 season, up 26% from a year earlier and accounting for roughly 16-17% of Russia’s total wheat exports to the continent. 

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda remain the community’s largest importers of Russian wheat. 

The record shipments to Tanzania come as Russia continues to expand wheat exports across Africa. Agroexport reported last week that exports to neighboring Kenya rose 10% year-on-year to around 1.4 million tons in the current season through late May. 

Wheat exports to Egypt also increased by 19% this year, while deliveries to Sudan surged 78%, according to the agency.

In May, Agroexport adviser Alexander Yakuba said shipments to the continent have grown by 22% over the past five years, topping $5 billion in 2025. Although grain continues to account for the bulk of exports, deliveries of value-added products – such as animal feed, yeast, soft drinks, tea and coffee concentrates, and molasses – have more than doubled. Agroexport predicts total agricultural exports to Africa could exceed $7.5 billion by 2030.
