Karoline Leavitt will step down as White House press secretary at the end of August, Donald Trump announced.

The US president revealed her departure on social media, saying Leavitt was leaving “so she can spend more time” with her family. The 28-year-old gave birth to a daughter, Viviana, in May, and returned from maternity leave last month.

Leavitt served Trump as a press aide during his first term in the White House. She ran for Congress in 2022 as the Republican nominee for New Hampshire’s first congressional district but lost the race.

She joined Trump’s 2024 ​campaign ​and was transition ​spokeswoman before Trump selected ​her to ‌be White House ​press ​secretary. At 27 she was younger than Ronald Ziegler, who was 29 when he was Richard Nixon’s spokesperson.

A devout Christian, Leavitt, wearing a cross necklace, and her team would hold a short group prayer before she walked into the briefing room to face reporters. Family members and sailors say months at sea with no end in sight to a grueling Middle East deployment have intensified worries about mental health and the risk of self-harm aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. Those concerns were brought directly to Navy leadership Thursday, when family members spoke to Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao and other senior officials during intense town hall meetings, according to two spouses who attended.

In one case, a spouse tearfully told officials that she received a message that same day from her husband saying “he hopes he doesn’t wake up tomorrow,” according to one of the estimated 200 attendees at the San Diego town hall meeting.

Officials presiding over the meeting didn’t directly respond to that or similar statements but stressed that sailors aboard the ship had access to mental health workers, as well as chaplains and doctors, the spouse said. Those officials also said the service was working to send more mental health professionals to the ship, the spouse added. The worries expressed at Thursday’s meetings echo those raised independently with Stars and Stripes by sailors and family members in recent weeks. Interviews with active-duty sailors and family members, along with dozens of public social media comments and posts by crew members, describe sailors struggling with exhaustion and declining morale, including reports of suicidal thoughts and at least one instance where a crew member was prevented from jumping overboard.

The concerns come during an unusually demanding deployment — Lincoln sailors have supported 40 days of continuous combat operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations and logged 250 consecutive days at sea, according to Navy officials.

The US intelligence community doubted reports of an Iranian plot to kill President Donald Trump by shooting down Air Force One as it departed a NATO summit in Türkiye, the Washington Post has reported. Their assessment was reportedly conveyed to the administration, yet the Secret Service still opted to covertly move Trump to another aircraft.

US media broke the story of the clandestine maneuver this Monday. On leaving the meeting, Trump abruptly switched from his new Qatari-gifted Boeing 747-8 to the previous Air Force One, but it turned out he secretly left that aircraft as well in an airport catering truck, flying aboard a smaller military plane to the UK.
