Independent senator Jacqui Lambie has backed in Liberal MP Andrew Hastie as his stoush with One Nation leader Pauline Hanson intensifies. 

Hastie called Hanson a “coward” yesterday after she labelled the former SAS soldier a “traitor” for testifying in a defamation case brought by Ben Roberts-Smith. She also refused to delete or apologise for satirical cartoons commissioned by One Nation that called Hastie a “gutless maggot”. 

Lambie, also a veteran, defended Hastie during an interview with ABC radio this morning.

“I love Andrew to death, and this is an attack on a veteran. What she’s doing in those cartoons is absolutely disgusting. They are full of bloody violence. I mean, how people can watch that rubbish is beyond me,” she told Radio National.

“Attacking Andrew Hastie, a veteran that has served in our Afghanistan war, or any other veteran, is the lowest [thing] you can possibly do. That woman is nothing less than a bloody coward, she always has been, and she always will be. She wouldn’t last one day in that goddamn uniform. Leave our veterans alone, Hanson.”

Lambie has long advocated for Australian veterans and served in the Australian Army for 11 years. Last month, she used an address to parliament to make an impassioned plea for the government to scrap the $5000 annual cap on healthcare spending for veterans.
