"ostentatious disrespect" for Donald Trump's call for an energy ceasefire...
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns "people will die" after sudden restrictions on the military version of SpaceX's Starlink satellites — a vital tool in Ukraine's defence system — appeared to slow the country's drones on the battlefield. Russia rained more missiles and drones down on Ukrainian cities, knocking out electricity for hundreds of thousands of people in attacks Mr Zelenskyy called "ostentatious disrespect" for US President Donald Trump's call for an energy ceasefire. Mr Zelenskyy also said Ukraine had been denied the usual advance warning from its Western partners about oncoming strikes, deepening fears that Kyiv's relationship with Washington was unravelling. In an interview on the Piers Morgan Uncensored podcast published on Tuesday, local time, Mr Zelenskyy said he agreed with comments calling Russian president Vladimir Putin the "Hitler of our time". Mr Zelenskyy stopped short of saying Mr Putin was an "evil" mastermind, but said people were afraid and calling for the US to be "on our side". Mr Trump's rhetoric towards Ukraine and Mr Zelenskyy has hardened in recent weeks, with the US president agreeing to lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports. Mr Trump also called for Ukraine to find a new president. In response to increasingly frosty relations between Washington and Kyiv, Mr Zelenskyy told Morgan that it was a "pity" for Ukraine to lose a "strong partner". "It's painful when President Trump chooses one side, not our side," said.Asked about the restriction on the military version of SpaceX's Starlink services in Ukraine, Mr Zelenskyy said the decision to restrict them was "a big mistake". "This decision will bring a lot of human losses," he said, although he did not say who was responsible. "People will die." Mr Zelenskyy also said he was comfortable with Mr Trump being between Ukraine and Russia, but added: "If you are in the middle, you have to stay in the middle." Asked if he felt betrayed by Mr Trump, Mr Zelenskyy said: "Really, yes … but it's a little bit more complicated than just my emotions or my feelings. "We are not selling our country … it's not about business for us, it's just our life, and this is our country." More on UkraineWith his popularity sliding in the polls, Mr Trump has sought to frame Ukrainian drone attacks as being responsible for high diesel prices, rather than the ongoing war between the US and Iran. He has argued lifting sanctions on Russian diesel would bring down fuel prices, but the move has been criticised by European leaders. The US has crucial midterm elections on November 3, and voters are increasingly expressing frustration over the cost of living and high inflation. While Mr Trump is not on the ballot, his agenda could face greater opposition if the Democrats seize control of the House of Representatives and Senate. WHEN WILL THE NEWS OF THE WESTERN PROPAGANDA COME TO TERM WITH THE REALITY: UKRAINE IS A NAZI NASTY CORRUPT LITTLE COUNTRY, THE USA IS BIGGER THAN EUROPE AND RUSSIA HAS THE RIGHT TO DEFEND ITSELF AGAINST THE AGGRESSION FROM NATO? THE PRICE? UKRAINE WILL HAVE TO BE NEUTRAL, DENAZIFIED AND RETURN THE RUSSIAN GIFTS OF THE DONBASS [INCLUDING CRIMEA AND NOVORUSSYA] TO RUSSIA, FOR BEING A LITTLE SHIT....

Ukraine targeted two Russian oil refineries on Wednesday, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak has said. The facilities are in Russia’s Saratov and Ryazan regions, Novak said on the sidelines of the Russian Energy Week forum. He did not specify whether either refinery sustained damage. “We can see that the Ukrainian side is making no moves towards an energy ceasefire,” Novak said, referring to a limited ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev proposed by US President Donald Trump. On Sunday, Trump claimed that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire. Neither Moscow nor Kiev, however, has confirmed the truce, sending out mixed messages on the matter. Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky said the announcement “was news” for him, but expressed readiness to stop attacking Russian refineries should Moscow halt strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. https://rt-english.com/russia/647200-ukraine-attacks-refineries-trump/

The Prime Minister welcomed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine to Downing Street this afternoon. The leaders began by reflecting on their call on Saturday, and Russia’s blatant indiscriminate attacks on civilians and energy infrastructure since President Trump called for an energy ceasefire. It was clear that Russia had no interest in peace, the leaders underlined. Turning to how Ukraine’s allies could step up support, particularly in response to Russia’s barrage of jet-powered drones, the Prime Minister set out the UK’s latest package of Lightweight Multirole Missiles. The UK would continue to develop innovative military solutions for use on the battlefield in Ukraine, including retrofitting British capability onto equipment gifted from other partners, the Prime Minister added. On long range missiles, the leaders discussed how the UK could accelerate defensive support to Ukraine ahead of the winter. The UK would also continue its diplomatic efforts to support international supplies of defensive equipment too, the Prime Minister added. Both looked forward to speaking again soon. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/pm-meeting-with-president-zelenskyy-of-ukraine-14-october-2026

ice-breaking....
The Royal Navy’s sole ice patrol ship, HMS Protector, had to be towed back to Plymouth after suffering a double engine defect, leaving Britain without its only icebreaker, The Telegraph reported.
One Navy source described the situation as a “catastrophic failure,” while another called HMS Protector “a really important capability, not just for the Royal Navy but for the nation.”
And the timing could hardly be better for the irony. Britain continues talking up confrontation with Russia in the Arctic even as its one and only icebreaker cannot make it out of port. Russia, meanwhile, operates a fleet of more than 40 icebreakers.
The incident adds to a series of readiness problems facing the Royal Navy. Britain’s First Sea Lord admitted earlier this year that the Navy was “not ready for war.”
Both British aircraft carriers have reported mechanical problems since entering service, while the deployment of the £1 billion destroyer HMS Dragon to the eastern Mediterranean was also delayed earlier this year after maintenance issues.
So much Arctic saber-rattling, so little icebreaking.

NATO’S “THEORY OF VICTORY”: A WAR BEYOND THE PLAN
INTELDROP
Europe is building border fortifications, but NATO’s publicly outlined “theory of victory” envisages fighting far beyond them – striking command posts and air defenses on Russian territory. Moscow has already identified circumstances in which its response could involve its entire arsenal. Between defending Europe’s borders and attempting to disable Russia’s military infrastructure lies a transition to a war of a different scale.
What Warsaw Put on the Table
At the Warsaw Security Forum on October 12–13, NATO’s top commander in Europe, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, outlined a three-stage response to an attack on the alliance: “block, blunt, break.” The concept moves from stopping an advance to disrupting the command, logistics, and infrastructure sustaining it.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski addressed the forces Europe might eventually field, saying he expected a combined European army by 2030, at least on the eastern flank.
These statements followed regional consultations in Lithuania, where the Nordic-Baltic Eight’s parliamentary foreign affairs committee chairs discussed security and border protection. Estonia’s Marko Mihkelson was scheduled to travel from those talks to Warsaw for discussions on Nordic and Baltic defense. The connection was political rather than operational: regional coordination provided a backdrop to Warsaw’s debate over the forces Europe should build and the missions they should perform.
Grynkewich’s concept gave that debate a concrete military scope. Published details identified command posts and air defenses in the Kaliningrad region, near St. Petersburg, and in Belarus as potential targets. Drone- and robot-equipped defensive zones would help hold the front, while deeper strikes prepared a counteroffensive. Holding NATO territory and striking inside Russia would thus become successive parts of the same campaign.
Grynkewich says NATO does not seek Russia’s strategic defeat. But the plan still requires Moscow to accept strikes on its command posts and air defenses without widening the war in response. That is not a condition NATO can dictate. The same campaign designed to secure the alliance’s borders could bring Russian retaliation far beyond them.
Moscow Has Stated Its Position
In late September, Russia warned that attempts to cut off Kaliningrad could prompt the use of its entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons. On October 13, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko described the warning as a preventive signal intended to avert armed confrontation. Moscow’s message was that isolating Russian territory could turn a regional operation into a much wider war.
That warning gave particular significance to a question put to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte the following day in Tallinn: would the alliance close the Gulf of Finland to Russian ships in wartime? Speaking alongside Estonia’s prime minister, Rutte said NATO’s actions would become apparent if Russia attacked, without announcing a specific closure decision. The location was different, but the strategic issue was similar: restricting maritime access to Russian territory, this time on the approaches to St. Petersburg.
Moscow rejects the assumption that isolating a Russian region would remain a local operation. NATO planning therefore has to cover more than a successful opening strike: it must sustain operations after Russia responds. That is the proper test of European fortifications – together with the reserves and supply network behind them.
Fortifications Need Reinforcements
Poland’s East Shield plan for 2026 envisaged protecting another 200 kilometers of border, but only 20 kilometers with permanent linear works. The remainder would rely on pre-positioned construction materials.
Estonia plans 600 small bunkers by the end of 2027. Such positions must be occupied, supplied, and reinforced in time.
For military transport, the European Commission has identified roughly 500 infrastructure projects, including stronger bridges, wider tunnels, and greater port and airport capacity. It also identifies shortages of rail wagons and ferries for equipment. Around €1.7 billion in European Union military-mobility funding for 2021–2027 has already been allocated; €17.65 billion was proposed for the next budget period. But an allocation is not a completed transport route.
History illustrates the distinction. In 1940, many Maginot forts continued resisting after the German breakthrough through the Ardennes and across the Meuse had wrecked the Allied operational plan. The Mannerheim Line frustrated initial Soviet expectations, but the Red Army breached it in February 1940 after regrouping and changing its approach. Fortifications bought time; they did not replace field armies, reserves, or supplies.
Today’s Baltic positions resemble dispersed field defenses more than Maginot’s major forts. Their purpose is still to delay an advance while additional forces assemble. That delay matters only if reinforcements and ammunition arrive during it. Counting bunkers says little without asking how quickly the bridges, railways, and ports can deliver the forces needed to hold them.
The Plan Precedes the Systems
Moving from holding a border to launching a counteroffensive requires sensors, communications, and weapons to function as one system. Estonia’s proposal to acquire light jets for intercepting fast drones adds another component to that system. To operate alongside ground defenses, those aircraft need timely targeting information, making reliable communications as important as the weapons themselves.
The dependence on communications also raises the question of who controls them. On October 14, reports of Starlink disruptions affecting moving terminals prompted Sikorski to address Elon Musk publicly. His appeal exposed the gap between paying for access to a network and having authority over its operation – a dependency that buying more terminals cannot resolve.
Europe’s planned answer is to build its own satellite capabilities. Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius identified 2029 as the target for the first phase of IRIS², Europe’s secure satellite-communications system, and called for European orbital reconnaissance. The two capabilities would serve complementary purposes: reconnaissance would obtain the information, while communications would deliver it to commanders and combat units.
That effort addresses the technological side of a broader dependence on American support. The availability of U.S. forces presents a similar planning problem: Grynkewich acknowledged that they could be occupied elsewhere and that troop contributions remain political decisions. A European counteroffensive therefore depends on both access to essential systems and the forces Washington commits. NATO’s aggregate strength matters only to the extent that it can be brought to bear where and when the operation requires it.
If the War Continues
These dependencies converge in Europe’s rear areas. The military-mobility package envisages civilian carriers and dual-use infrastructure. Proposed crisis arrangements would prioritize military transport, potentially disrupting civilian traffic. Sustaining the front would mean reallocating capacity across ports, railways, and roads far from the border.
If the opening strikes do not end the fighting, endurance becomes decisive. Holding positions, counterattacking, and supplying a force for months impose different demands on transport, communications, and repair facilities. Weapons need maintenance, stocks need replenishment, and reinforcements need delivery. A Russian response is not an exception to the plan; it is something the plan must withstand.
Public promises of decisive action remove none of these dependencies. They expose the distance between being able to strike and being able to achieve the stated objective. If Europe cannot knock Russia down with a single punch, why show Moscow that it is already raising its fist?
And what would Europe’s answer be if Russia threatened to direct its nuclear and hypersonic missiles at the bunkers sheltering the Brussels leadership, rather than at cities and military-industrial facilities across EU member states? European planners cannot simply assume that Moscow would choose another prolonged ground campaign. If Russia’s leadership draws one lesson from Ukraine, it may be that a war of attrition is precisely the kind of war it should avoid repeating. Brussels is announcing how it intends to fight. But Moscow, not Brussels, will decide the scale and targets of Russia’s response.

open market...
US President Donald Trump has claimed that American missiles supplied to Ukraine under his predecessor, Joe Biden, were sold on the “open market.” In an interview with Newsmax aired on Thursday, Trump questioned the whereabouts of billions of dollars in US military and financial aid to Kiev.
The president made the remarks after Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky said he felt betrayed by Trump’s unexpected decision to lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports in a bid to curb rising energy prices.
Asked by host Rob Finnerty about the Ukrainian leader’s decision to defy Trump’s demand to halt strikes on Russian energy facilities, Trump said, “Zelensky is not a good guy for us to deal with. Biden gave him billions and billions of dollars.”
Trump went on to argue that Zelensky was unwilling to resolve the conflict with Russia through diplomacy. “He says he wants to settle but he [doesn’t],” he said.
“No, I’m not a big fan of Zelensky. They’ve destroyed that country,” Trump said.
Trump blasted Biden for providing Ukraine with “massive amounts” of missiles, interceptors and financial aid free of charge. He also compared Zelensky to P.T. Barnum, the 19th-century American showman and businessman famous for his elaborate publicity stunts, sensational attractions and hoaxes.
“Where is the cash that we gave to Ukraine? Where is all the equipment? Biden was giving them missiles, and they were being sold on the open market,” Trump said, without elaborating.
The interview aired shortly after CNN reported that Ukraine had exhausted its few remaining Patriot interceptor missiles while defending against Russian ballistic missile strikes. Zelensky has repeatedly requested additional interceptors from the US and European partners in recent months.
Speaking to Newsmax, Trump said the US would prioritize replenishing its own weapons stockpiles. “Once we are really stocked, we will start letting our allies buy them from us,” he said.
The US depleted much of its interceptor missile stockpile during the war with Iran, according to widespread reports in American media and a Pentagon inspector general’s report released last month. Trump has previously downplayed the shortages, claiming that US stockpiles were virtually unlimited.
