Vladimir Zelensky has emerged from the EU summit in Brussels with fresh promises of support but no deal on the additional €70 billion ($79 billion) he is demanding for Ukraine. Instead, European leaders tasked the European Commission with finding ways to meet Kiev’s growing financial needs, leaving the question of who will foot the bill unanswered.

The Ukrainian leader arrived in Brussels following a bitter public falling-out with US President Donald Trump over Washington’s decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel supplies. His demands have put further pressure on Kiev’s European backers, who are already struggling with soaring energy costs, strained budgets and the prospect of a difficult winter.

 

  • Zelensky rejected the arrangement, saying he felt “betrayed” by Trump and called the US president’s decision “weak.”
  • Trump then called for Ukraine to get a “new president,” and questioned Zelensky’s willingness to reach a settlement with Moscow.
  • Zelensky announced continued refinery attacks and complained of restrictions on American intelligence support and Starlink services.
  • On Thursday, Kiev hit a refinery in Russia’s Ryazan Region, despite Washington’s clearly expressed expectations and objections.
  • Trump called the attacks a “disgrace” and accused Zelensky of “driving up fuel prices for everyone.”
  • On Thursday night, after Zelensky arrived in Brussels, Trump went hard in an interview with Newsmax. “He says he wants to settle, but he doesn’t,” Trump said, adding that Zelensky was harder to deal with than Putin. He also alleged that US missiles supplied to Kiev had been sold on the “open market.”
  • Washington also announced it would prioritize its own munitions stocks over others. “Once we are really stocked, we will start letting our allies buy them from us,” Trump said.

The summit also failed to break the deadlock over frozen Russian sovereign assets held in Belgium. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz continued to push for the funds to be used to support Kiev, despite his unpopularity at home, while flatly rejecting a US proposal to include them in a peace settlement. After the talks, Merz acknowledged that “there were no decisions, but there was an exchange of views,” warning that the €90 billion loan already agreed for Ukraine “will not be enough.”

In space, no one hears Zelensky scream: No euros can buy Kiev options in orbit

European NATO members are unable to replace American intelligence and Starlink coverage for Kiev

 

No matter how European leaders pledge to support Ukraine come hell or high water and let the taxpayers foot the bill, the cold hard fact is that there are things no euros can buy, such as US intelligence and satellite communications.

Kiev’s critical reliance on American space capabilities came to the fore this week when the long-standing feud between US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky flared up again. Trump, who had struck a diesel supply deal with Russia, called Zelensky a hindrance to peace who should be replaced. Zelensky called Trump a weakling who had betrayed Ukraine, if not in those exact terms.

According to lamentations from Kiev corroborated by media reporting, the White House put a chokehold on the Zelensky government by suspending early warning about incoming Russian ballistic missiles and temporarily suspending access to Starlink satellite internet for fast-moving objects – such as drones used in Kiev’s “middle strike” operations inside what Washington recognizes as part of Ukraine.

It’s not like Kiev was not warned. During a meeting in Miami last week, US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner reportedly told the Ukrainians the diesel deal announcement was coming and that Kiev should not have ignored Trump’s multiple requests to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries.

Accounts shared with Axios and Reuters suggest the Americans were polite enough not to say “what a nice deal to get intelligence and internet you have; it would be a shame if something happened to it.” But they mentioned “all that the US has done ⁠for Ukraine.” The Ukrainians did take it as a threat.

Here are the alternatives Kiev would have, should Trump push the issue further.

No match for US intelligence

Intelligence that European NATO members can provide is a far cry from what the US has been delivering for years. Already, early warning about Russian ballistic missile launches has stopped coming, just as Zelensky is complaining.

The US operates the Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS), whose backbone is six geosynchronous orbit satellites equipped with thermal sensors that detect launch signatures, complemented by two active and two reserve payloads in a highly elliptical orbit.

Russian forces have liberated the key Ukrainian stronghold of Dobropolye in Donbass, Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov has reported to President Vladimir Putin.

During a meeting on Friday, Gerasimov said assault units from several brigades had taken part in the operation and were searching basements for any remaining Ukrainian troops.

Putin praised the “coordinated and highly professional” actions of the Russian assault units, noting that Ukrainian forces had turned Dobropolye into a “robust stronghold.”

In late September, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces had encircled Dobropolye.

The town’s capture marks another step in Russia’s advance toward the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration, a cluster of cities in northwestern DPR that forms Ukraine’s last major fortified stronghold in the region.

 Russian Forces Liberate Palamarevka, Kovalevka in Kharkov Region, Malokaterinovka in Zaporozhye

 

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Russian army has liberated the settlements of Palamarevka and Kovalevka in the Kharkov region, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

Russia's Vostok battlegroup established control over the settlement of Velikomikhailovka in the Dnepropetrovsk region, the ministry said.

The liberation of the settlements allows to expand the security zone Russia is establishing to prevent the Ukrainian army from shelling Russian territories.

Units of the Dnepr battlegroup have liberated the settlement of Malokaterinovka in the Zaporozhye region, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

The liberation of Malokaterinovka allows the Russian army to advance towards the further liberation of the Zaporozhye region.

Ukraine lost up to 345 soldiers in combat against Russia's Tsentr battlegroup over the past day, in addition to losses in manpower and equipment on other fronts, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

 

"The losses of the Ukrainian armed forces amounted to up to 345 servicepeople, an Italian-made Puma armored personnel carrier, four armored combat vehicles, seven vehicles, a field artillery piece and three electronic warfare stations," the ministry said in a statement.

 

This is in addition to:

Over 160 Ukrainian soldiers eliminated over the past day by Russia's Sever battlegroup

Over 135 by the Vostok battlegroup

Up to 230 by the Zapad battlegroup

Up to 145 by the Yug battlegroup

Up to 25 by the Dnepr battlegroup

The Russian army has carried out a massive strike with high-precision ground-, air- and sea-based weapons and strike UAVs on metallurgical plants, a transformer enterprise and an energy facility in the Ukrainian cities of Krivoy Rog, Zaporozhye and Zhitomir.

▫️ In the city of Krivoy Rog, a metallurgical plant was hit — Ukraine's largest metallurgical enterprise, which supplies metal products to the Ukrainian military-industrial complex

▫️ In Zhitomir, an electrical substation was hit — it distributes electricity from the western regions to central Ukraine for the operation of military-industrial complex enterprises

In the city of Zaporozhye, the following were hit:

▫️ A metallurgical plant ("Zaporozhstal"), which was Ukraine's largest metallurgical enterprise. It is part of Rinat Akhmetov's SCM group. It previously produced up to 1.44 million tonnes of pig iron and over 1.3 million tonnes of rolled steel per year. Its products went mainly to the needs of the military industry

▫️ An industrial enterprise (JSC "Zaporozhtransformator"), which produces 220-750 kV power oil transformers. Since 2022, it has been under the management of Ukraine's ministry of defense and is used in the interests of the Ukrainian army
